The Urgency for Renewable Energy
The availability of affordable and reliable energy services are critical to developing nations for meeting their
challenges of providing for food, shelter, water, sanitation, health and access to information. The lack of access to
affordable and reliable energy services contributes to persistence of poverty and constrained productive endeavors
in these nations. Developing economies, especially from Africa and Asia are not able to provide access to basic
energy services to their people. Approximately 1.7 to 2 billion people in the developing world still lack access to
electricity. Most of the developing economies are still largely dependent on fossil based fuels for electricity
generation. Such dependency is highly capital intensive, and requires a lot of money for centralized generation and
distribution. Further, such dependency depletes fossil fuels and causes extensive damage to the environment. It is
now increasingly being realized that energy access to developing communities needs to be tackled with alternative
renewable sources of energy through a distributed generation approach; such an approach, would ensure
equitable and reliable access to energy.

COMMUNITY EMPOWERNMENT BUSINESS MODEL
®
THRIVE believes that the key to delivering an innovative and sustainable solution to the bottom of the pyramid
necessitates keeping the supply chain as short as possible by avoiding middlemen. It also believes that customized
®
financing mechanisms help the poor to acquire and own a light. THRIVE , therefore chooses to work mostly with
micro finance institutions, women groups, rural banks, NABARD, SIDBI, World Bank and like-minded NGOs that
are committed to working with the poor. THRIVE® chooses to not sell its lights through shopping malls or home
depots in metros.
THRIVE® s business model further believes in the need for prompt and dedicated after sales service support for its
entire product line. THRIVE® provides free service and maintenance training to beneficiaries; the training enables
them to repair/service any minor problem that may occur in the lights. Further, THRIVE® s village energy kiosks
allows its beneficiaries to own the lighting initiative and makes it a sustainable business model.
®
THRIVE 's GROWTH INITIATIVES
It is estimated that there is a USD 25-50 billion market for solar powered lighting and solar based energy business in
rural & urban India. Industrial establishments are fast realizing the need for not only reducing their energy intensity
and saving power bills but also the need for uninterrupted supply of power for their production units. Governments
all over the world are supporting energy saving and renewable energy initiatives by offering many fiscal and other
incentives.
RENEWABALE ENERGY CENTRE
®
THRIVE , The NGO owns a 20 acre campus on the outskirts of Hyderabad where a renewable energy centre is
being developed. The centre will serve as a full-fledged solar lighting solutions training and demonstration facility
for all stakeholders involved in the endeavor of providing a clean, reliable and affordable lighting solution to the
light deprived of the world.
DIVERSIFYING INTO SOLAR POWER PLANTS
®
THRIVE ENERGY now has a full-fledged manufacturing facility for making solar panels of various types with an
installed capacity of up to 15 MW. With around 148 employees in production, 142 employees in field operations,
and a strong team of engineers and technicians THRIVE® ENERGY now has the muscle to design and commission
Solar Power Plants.
AUGMENTING PRODUCTS
®
THRIVE ENERGY Technologies is continuously customizing and configuring its products to cater to the differing
needs of its beneficiaries.
DRIVING THE 'ONE CHILD ONE LIGHT' MISSION
One of the initiatives very dear to THRIVE® is to promote the “One Child One Light” program, the mission of which
is to provide, every child, who is so far dependent on a fossil fuel powered or kerosene lamp for studying at night
with a bright, non-polluting, dependable, safe and low cost solar energy light by the year 2020. Dr.Ranga is the
Chief Trustee of the One Child One Light program.
