Commodore’s Report
Hello Members,
The official opening of the BIYC club room was well attended by around 60 invited guests
including Ben Callard CEO from Yachting Queensland, Lisa France MP, MBRC Gary
Parsons, representatives from Sunshine Coast Yacht Club’s Ian Brownhill, Moreton Bay
Yacht Club’s Mal Betts, Queensland Cruising Yacht Squadron’s Peter Hackett and
members past and present.
More photos available on our Facebook page
Now we have our own club room, I encourage all members to use it, not only for BIYC
functions, but any time you wish to sit, have a coffee, read from our library or enjoy the
view over the Pumicestone passage.
Following the opening the celebrated our 12th anniversary dinner at the Blue Anchorage
Restaurant, one of our regular sponsors, with a fantastic meal and celebratory
atmosphere.
Next weekend is the BIYC AGM with breakfast BBQ. This will be followed by our Blue
Anchorage Mission Point races 3 & 4.
Please consider nominating for a committee position at the AGM or by returning the
nomination form sent out earlier.
See you on the water,
Malcolm Hollywood
P.S. As I’m able to access the club’s Gmail from my home computer, when I
send out communication it still states email from Dianne Colless, the original
administrator of our email account.. Please don’t think this is a virus. I am
trying to fix this. Please be patient.

Use of BIYC Club Room
The room is for you the members to use not just for official events the BIYC may hold
but you are welcome to open up, read books from the library, watch TV or DVDs, sit
around and discuss what the club can improve or just make yourself a cup of coffee and
look out over the beautiful Pumicestone Passage. Invite your friends down if you wish as
your guests.
All we ask is;





Collect the keys from any member of the management committee or if not
available, there are a spare set in the duty officers room at VMR if that is easier
for you. Please make sure you return them. The keys are to keep thieves out and
not you the members.
Please ensure you sign the visitor’s book at the front door. This is not only for
insurance purposes but also records to the committee who is using the room
There is a quality Nespresso coffee machine available for you to use along with
tea. Some UHT milk is in the draw of the unit however you may wish to bring
your own. As the Nespresso is costly, it would be appreciated if you place a
donation for each cup in the plastic container available.
As the club room provides much needed exposure to the passing community, we
ask when you are using the room you open the roller door, place the BIYC
Discover Sailing flags in the garden at the beginning of the driveway and pass on
the available leaflets at the entrance door to any one enquiring about
membership or learn to sail. Invite them in for a free cuppa if you wish. It would
be great and very helpful if someone could do this on a Saturday or
Sunday. This is when the locals and tourists are around.
If you see something that is not wright or not clean then please fix it and report it
to the committee.
BUT ABOVE ALL

Please, please, please make sure you clean up after you have used the room
and not rely on someone else to do it. Remember, should another member follow
you and has a guest or potential new member, we need to make a good
impression.
A Brief History of BIYC at the VMR Bribie Base
In 2002 the VMR Bribie called for a public meeting to gauge the community interest in
sailing and power boat activities. The meeting was well attended and so with sponsorship
and support from VMR Bribie the Bribie Island Boat Club was formed and was
incorporated in July 2002.
Previous to this there had been 3 attempts prior to 2002 to establish a sailing club
without any long term success, but this formation of the club was to be the beginnings of
today’s Bribie Island Yacht Club.
In 2005 an application was applied for and approved for the VMR to extend their land
lease from the crown on the eastern side of the base to assist with the accommodation
of the Bribie Island Boat Club Inc. Due to building restrictions, the boat club was unable
to build on this land and it is now used for secure car and boat storage for both the VMR
and BIYC.
In 2013, the BIYC and VMR Bribie reached a landmark agreement to allow BIYC to use a
portion of the ground floor at the VMR base to establish a club room for training,
meetings, equipment storage and a members lounge area. The BIYC contributed funds
to VMR towards the costs of refurbishing the ground floor facilities for all to use.
In 2014, after much planning, club members then set to work to create the wonderful
clubroom that we have today, culminating in the grand opening on the 19th of July.
Membership
We will be embarking on a new Learn to Sail campaign soon using banners and media
stories. We are also looking at doing some Bunnings or Masters sausage sizzles as a
means to raise some funds as well as interest in the club. As a member, I would hope
some of you will offer your time to assist if possible.
We have Masters booked for a sausage sizzle fundraised and membership drive set for
17th August and will urgently require assistance to run this as it is the day after our Blue
Anchorage Mission Pt race. For those skippers and crew that aren’t sailing in
Saturday’s race can you please step forward and assist.
New Members
Please welcome new members John & Sandra Belleri, owners of Eddie Edstein’s old boat
Aquarius 24 Love It and the return of Alan Dossel and partner Janna Galsie. Alan went
missing there for a few years under the influence of Bicardi however has seen the error
of his ways and now has a great appreciation of a man’s drink Red Wine.
see you back on the water Al.

Great to
Social Report
On Friday 22 August we will be hold our first social event in our new club room. All
members and partners are encouraged to attend this momentous occasion. A dinner will
be provided. Details to follow. We will be presenting a video of the 2014 B2B race
supplied by the Hervey Bay Sailing Club. We will also have representatives from Yachting
Queensland attending as our guests.
Fundraising
As you should be aware, the club has had a difficult year financially and has arranged a
Sausage Sizzle at Masters in August to raise much needed funds as well as promoting
our club to the Caboolture community. Final details will be sent out soon so please help
out if you can.
Some of you should be aware of a generous donation recently from a local family of the
husband/father’s sailing equipment. There are various pieces from spinnakers, sheets,
diving equipment, a parachute (not sure what for) plus many other items. Michael
Bourke is in the process of cataloguing everything and will send out the information
soon. Members will have first option to purchase at a realistic price, and anything left
over will be sold on Ebay.
When Michael has finalised this we will hold a garage sale at the club room to sell off
what we can. This is also an opportunity for you the members to bring down any old
equipment you may wish to sell. Will keep you posted on a date.
Maintenance
At some stage soon, we need to have a clean up of our storage room as well as go
through our equipment.

All Shook Up
A frivolous but vigorous Rock'n'Roll musical presented by Dougie and the
Dreamers which incorporates all your favourite songs from the 50's and 60's.
While Loretta and Johnny, the stars of the show, resolve their problems in song,
the audience is invited to hit the dance floor with enthusiasm (style and rhythm
are not required)! Falling asleep is not an option as vigorous clapping and
energetic (if not melodious) singing are part of your role!
Guys: drag those blue suede shoes from the wardrobe and dust off the stovepipe trousers! Girls: put on your mod wig and mini!
