SUMMARY
The Wig and Make-up Assistant assists the Wig and Make-up Department Head according to production,
administrative and shop needs in preparation for and execution of all Houston Grand Opera performance
activities as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assists the Wig and Make-up Department Head in the operations of the Wig and Makeup
Department.
• Assists in maintaining a well-organized and well-run wig and make-up shop.
• In the absence of the Wig and Makeup Head, and in consultation with the Technical and Production
Director, performs the duties of the Wig and Makeup Head.
• Builds, repairs, styles and/or maintains wigs and facial hair as assigned.
• Perform show tracks as wig and makeup artist as assigned.
• Maintains inventory of materials in wig and makeup shop.
• Assembles and maintains inventory of performer makeup kits.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidate should possess an appropriate combination of the following: education in the field of hair
and/or make-up design, three years related professional experience, experience as a principal Make-up
Artist/Hairdresser. Knowledge of wig construction, styling and maintenance techniques, facial hair
construction, styling and maintenance techniques, prosthetics, historical periods and their appropriate
hairstyles preferred. Candidate is expected to have good interpersonal communication skills, tact and
flexibility in stressful situations, and ability to work sensitively with artistic teams and other staff
members.
SPECIAL JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as necessary. Must be able to lift forty pounds to
waist level.
