PROJECT+FAITH CAMPAIGN UPDATES This past week we received
final permit and occupancy approval for the entire Faith Center
project. At long last we can make full use of all these new ministry
spaces! Thanks to Tom Motta, and to all who have worked so hard to
bring us to this important moment.
Our campaign contribution total has now surpassed the
625,000 mark! In addition, major bequests have brought us within
less than $200,000 of our Capital Campaign goal. Support activities for
the new year will be announced soon. Please help us meet this
important goal as construction is completed, and new facilities
openfor ministry and mission.

Glory Lutheran Church
[Mandarin/English Worship]
WELCOME TO THIS COMMUNITY OF
FAITH & GRACE! We’re so glad
you’re here today; you are important to
us, and it’s a blessing to welcome you!
Please note that it is no longer necessary
to complete the welcome card each week.
Cards are in the pew racks, for you to use
to communicate with us, or to request us to
be of any special service to you. Completed
cards can be left with an usher or placed in
the offering plate
Please greet the Pastors and greeters
as you leave service today. They’ll be so
glad to meet you. And please come again!
In the Spring of 2005, First Lutheran decided to add a major
new element to our mission of care for the South Bay
community: to develop a 501[c][3] non-profit charitable
corporation dedicated to social service ministry. Due to the
efforts of Pr. Floyd Lawson and a dedicated board, FirstServe
Community Services of the South Bay, Inc., was born.
FirstServe allows FLCS to overcome the limitations that
churches often encounter in developing financial support for
their human service work. In addition to funding sources that
FLCS can reach as a religious organization, FirstServe can
receive support from corporations, foundations and groups that
may not be permitted to support faith groups.
Each week in January you will learn more about FirstServe’s
fine work in health related programs, nutrition and wellness,
literacy and multicultural advancement, education and the arts,
and various efforts in eldercare and health education. These
programs are at the very heart of the FirstServe mission:
“inspiring people, changing lives.”
Please keep the work of our wonderful social service partner in
your prayers, and help us in this work as you are able. And may
God continue to bless our efforts to seek the face of Christ in
the faces of our neighbors in need!

What’s happening this week at First Lutheran School …
•
On THURSDAY -- Parents with children entering kindergarten in September can find out
everything they need to know at 7 p.m. at KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION NIGHT at
First Lutheran School. Kindergarten teachers and others will explain the kindergarten
program at WASC-accredited FLS, as well as providing information on what children
need to be ready to enter kindergarten.
•
On FRIDAY -- Young violinists from First Lutheran and other local schools will perform
OSCAR CLASSICS and OTHER AWARD-WINNING MUSIC at 7 p.m. in the FLCS
sanctuary. “A Night at the Oscars” will feature South Bay youth ages 5 to 14 who are
students in the Arts Alive music program. The free concert will include a number
performed by recent recipients of the Maurice Nardone Violin Scholarship, including First
Lutheran’s own Isabella Pellicciari-Torres, a fifth-grader at FLS.
PERSONAL INVITATION: Studies show that there simply is no substitute for the power of a personal
invitation when it comes to helping people discover (or recover) a living and vital faith. So it’s really up
to each of us to reach out and invite others to experience the joy of following Christ, and introduce
others to the beating heart of our faith. Here’s how you might respond to this calling to reach out:
1) Think about persons in your life who need the grace and love of Christ in a deeper way;
2) Pray fervently for God to open doors and windows for them to encounter that love;
3) Invite them – whether to a service of worship, or to a choir concert or other event.
4) Accompany them – no one likes to feel alone, and your presence will be a blessing and strength.
Your personal outreach makes an enormous difference in helping people really feel welcome!
BAPTISM IS FOR EVERYONE! All children and adults are welcome to full
participation in the Christian faith through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. It’s
never too late (or too early) to receive God’s saving grace in the Water of Life!
Call or email Pastor Hurst to learn more [310-320-9920 x112 or
[email protected]], as we begin and continue to “walk wet” in God’s loving
promises. Note: Baptisms can be held at any of our three weekend services.

HOMELESS COUNT: The South Bay Coalition to End Homelessness needs our help. The 2015
Homeless Count for the South Bay is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28. Volunteers register
(http://lahsa.nationbuilders.com/southbay ) and select a city or community they would like to count.
They will be assigned to a deployment site. On the night of the count, volunteers will check in at the
deployment site no later than 8 pm for training and an overview of the project. Volunteers will be
divided into teams of 3 or 4 and be assigned one or more census tracts to cover. (Census tracts are
areas contained within a zip code.) Team members will be given tally sheets, T-shirts, and
flashlights. At 8:45 pm, counters will be deployed to count their designated tracts. This will take
about 2 to 3 hours. When a team finishes counting, they report back to the deployment site to return
the tally sheets and flashlights. Volunteers may keep the T-shirts.
This count is required by HUD every two years. With stronger support from cities, other government
agencies, and nonprofit organizations, the Coalition hopes to obtain accurate information to assist
those in need. By working together, organizations in the
Coalition are able to identify homeless people, become more
aware of the homeless populations, coordinate service efforts,
identify resource need for homeless people, and leverage
resources.

Giving 101: Charity is NOT just for the holidays
In a short time we will all be swept up in the good feelings of the holidays and
barraged by many great causes that all would like to have your support. First
Lutheran is one of those organizations that rely on the generosity of you at the
holidays, but we cannot rely solely on holiday giving.
First Lutheran has bills that are due all year round. Salaries, water, and electric bills don’t wait to get paid
just around the holidays. The truth is, we survive on the generosity of our members all year round. A
weekly or monthly commitment to your church is not only what helps us stay financially afloat, but allows
us to provide services to our members, community and charities we support.
We are working hard to make it easy for you to support our caring ministry. I am specifically asking those
who do not currently support on a regular basis or have yet to make a financial decision to make a
difference in our church. At the risk of sounding cliché, it takes a whole village to run a church, and we
need everyone’s support. Thanks for prayerfully considering a continuous gift.

“Anthem! Our new youth group here at First Lutheran has three core values. Experience God.
Expand the Kingdom. Elevate the World. Only through the work of Holy Spirit in us may we

about our youth falling in love with their Bridegroom Jesus Christ, Knowing WHO’s they are,
