_______________________________________________
Year 11 students were involved in a team sixteen competition
at Calderdale College organised through West Yorkshire FA.
NHGS PE department signed up to an eight week coaching
course led by a level 2 FA coach. The aim was to engage
students who do not play football outside of school or even for
the school football team.
The students organised their own teams on the day of the
event, tactics, formations and even allocation of captains each
game. The purple team of Edward Winfield, Josh Mouncey,
Jamie Battye, Zac Edwards, Josh Mucha, Andy Marshall and
Oliver Roberts finished runners up to a strong Trinity Academy
team in the final,

Inter-house Cross Country
In the last week before the Christmas break the whole school
got involved in the annual interhouse cross country
competition. There was a fantastic turn out from the Lower
School in particular with students opting for either the “Turkey
trot” (fun run, two laps around the fields) or the “Christmas
Dash” (the competitive race, 3 laps around the field). PE staff
were ably assisted by Y12 AS PE students. The overall results
were:

Unfortunately the deadlock could not be broken
so it went to 5 minutes golden goal! Still the
drama continued with neither side able to score
despite desperate efforts on behalf of both
teams. In the end it was decided that the two
teams would share the title of U13 Indoor
hockey champions 2014.
The squad was - Beth, Eleanor, Phoebe, Grace,
Rosie and Rosie Darnley, Regan , Niamh.

Calderdale at the West Yorkshire cross country
championships at Leeds Grammar School on
Saturday 1st February 2014.
U13 Indoor Hockey Tournament - Joint
Calderdale Champions 2014
The girls’ U13 indoor hockey team took part in
the annual Calderdale championship on 16th
January. NHGS being one of the only schools
in Calderdale without a sports hall makes
training for such a competition quite tricky.
However the team acquitted themselves
incredibly well and pulled off some fantastic
results.
In the pool competition NHGS beat Ryburn 1-0
with a single goal from Naimh. They also beat
Crossley Heath 3-0 with goals from Phoebe,
Regan and Niamh. This progressed the girls to
the semi-final stage.
Here the girls met Rastrick who had won
through in the other pool. It was a tough match
but the NHGS team had begun to gel and they
came out 3-1 victors and progressed to the final.
In the final they met Rishworth for an 8 minute
each way battle. This was unsurprisingly the
toughest match of them all with outstanding
performances coming from Rosie in goal, saving
several shots from point blank range. Regan
and Niamh worked tirelessly up front to press
and harass the Rishworth defence.

www.readformyschool.co.uk
It is a print and digital reading initiative that promotes
reading for pleasure and rewards students who read.
It started on 27th January and runs until 28th March.
After reading a book students are asked to log what
they have read. All students who read 8 or more
books will be entered into a prize draw. Also all
schools who collectively read e50 books will be
entered into a draw.
Students need to log on to the site and create a pupil
account.
They need the school code which is 139917.

In October 2013 the NHGS Theatre Company
was set up to give students the opportunity to
develop theatre skills. Their first performance
was at the End-of-Term Concert where they
performed ‘You Can’t Stop The Beat’ from the
Musical ‘Hairspray.’
Now they are taking the next step and allowing
the world to see their skills in action in
Showcase #1.
Showcase #1 is about developing and using the
skills they’ve learned.
There will be show
tunes, sketches, extracts from plays and more.
Much of the choreography and the choice of
material has been student led. The students
and the staff are very excited to be involved in
what promises to be an interesting and varied
evening of entertainment.
We hope to see a large audience of parents,
friends and most importantly other students
come along to join us.
Tickets are available using ParentPay.

Students continue to make much effort in
Sociology
Since September 2011, students that have
‘stood out’ in lessons for making that extra effort
have been rewarded with the title ‘Sociologist
of the Week!’ This award involves three
elements. Firstly: a surprise phone-call home
(Friday p.m.) to parents/guardians of the lucky
winner (who then inform the student)! Secondly:
the student’s name is added to the ‘Sociologist
of the Week’ display and he/she receives a welldeserved adaptation of a jingle in ‘Harry Hill’s
TV Burp’! Finally: an announcement to all
Sociology groups as to who has won and why,
takes place. Numerous students have made an

‘Sociologist of the Half-Term!’
This student has exemplified much effort,
resilience and determination in Sociology. She
has adopted such an incredible work ethic that I
have wondered at times where she has got her
energy from! She informed me at the beginning
of the year that she wanted to exceed her target
grade, and has worked hard to produce work of
a very high standard ever since. Indeed, she
has asked crucial questions to move her
learning forward, and helped another student to
become more organised!
So, a big ‘CONGRATULATIONS’ goes to
(drum-roll please)…
Amy (U6.6). Well done Amy – you really
deserve it.
Thanks to those students who have shown an
interest in SocSoc. See you after the February
half-term holiday (Wednesday 12.30pm SF2).

On Wednesday 18th December each student
completed a general knowledge quiz consisting
of 50 questions. The competition was organised
into three sections – a junior section for Years 7
and 8, an intermediate section for Years 9, 10
and 11 and a Sixth Form section. This year the
annual pre-Christmas quiz was run using
PowerPoint rather than the traditional paper
format which allowed for a wider range of visual
resources to be used in the questions and a

the quiz. This year Waterhouse won the quiz
with an average score of 57.3%. Waterhouse
was also victorious in 2012-13’s quiz but had to
share the title with Lister. This year Lister was
second with 56.5% and Ackroyd third with an
average of 55.8%. The Lower School achieved
the highest average score. The students who
achieved the top scores in each year group are
listed below. It is noteworthy that Luis Bradley,
Saffiyah Skinner and Max Frost achieved the
highest scores in their year groups in 2012-13
as well. Congratulations to all the students who
completed the quiz.

Katey was a fantastic placement - she engaged
so well with our staff and volunteers, and
received many compliments from those who had
direct control of her workload. She was
extremely polite and courteous, fitted in so well
with the work force, was punctual and
appropriately dressed at all times.
Katey is a credit to herself, her family and her
school - you are lucky to have such a pupil,
although I suspect you have many just like her.
We are very glad that we took up the opportunity
of taking a placement - a first for us. We are
always very conscious of the confidentiality
aspect of our work, which has made us reluctant
previously. We are glad we took the risk with
Katey - she was just wonderful.

Megan – Whitehill Community Academy
Megan has been a valued member of our team
for the week she has spent here. Megan has
been a polite, helpful and interesting young lady
to have in our nursery. She has lots to contribute
during adult conversations as well as being able
to communicate successfully with our children.
Alex – Overgate Hospice
Alex should be extremely proud of her maturity,
the ways in which she has interacted with
patients, volunteers and staff members in all
aspects of her work experience. I have been
approached by many people who have come in
contact with Alex this week, to say what a lovely
girl she is and how impressed they are with how
well she has fitted into this environment.
Jamie has been eager to learn, and quick to pick
up the basic skills required to complete the role
of a Credit Controller, navigating and
understanding the systems rapidly, being able to
decipher the jargon used by ourselves and
making notes / comments on our system – even
speaking with one of our brokers directly.
It has been a pleasure to host Jamie for his work
experience, and, it is my hope that what he has
learned during his week here, will serve him well
in the years to follow.

Congratulations to Alana Silk and Kate Powell,
as their Artwork has made it into the Specialist

Both girls have received a £25 voucher and a

The gallery is of a very high standard and the
girls should be very proud of their achievement.
At NHGS we encourage students to be
independent learners and maintain an ethos
where it is acceptable to be bright. Eight
students were celebrating in the new year as
they received offers from Oxford and Cambridge
Universities. The subjects show a variety of
interests, covering Modern and Medieval
Languages, History, English, Engineering,
Medicine, Geology and Law.
The whole process for these students began a
year ago. Prior to their UCAS applications, the
students applied to and won places on Easter
and Summer Schools, attended conferences
and information events (both in and out of
school) as well as open days at their chosen
colleges.
NHGS provides the opportunity for the students
who are interested in applying to Oxbridge to
work with like-minded peers in a tutor group,
and by attending extra lessons throughout their
application process. They have all worked
extremely hard throughout the five month
process which demands average AS level
results around 95%, personal statements,
essays, admissions tests, mock interviews and
finally the notoriously challenging interviews at
the universities themselves, with some students
having to go again for second round interviews.
We are very proud of all our students who
applied this year as they all did themselves
great credit and deserve many congratulations.
Out of the 14 applicants, 8 received offers which
now requires them to achieve A and A* grades
at A level. The successful applicants are: Luis
Bradley, Joe Ding, Liam Johnston, Becki Nunn,
Anna Seccombe, Hannah Speed, Holly Unwin
and Joe Waldron.

A Record Number of Oxbridge Offers
It was an incredible feeling to find out that
Cambridge had given me an offer to study
there,
considering
all
the
immense
competition. I felt that through the
combination of going to the Oxford summer
school which allowed me to get a better idea
of what being an Oxbridge student actually
entailed, and the support given to me by my
teachers, I could approach the application
process and tackle the interview with
confidence. That said, I'm not there yet!

Applying to Cambridge was arduous, don't be
fooled into thinking it is the same as applying
to any other University. It's designed to test
you and make you question your abilities but
that is no reason not to try. I got 4 As at AS
and got rejected from Cambridge but I'm so
happy
I applied. The collegiate tutorial
system isn't for everyone but I'd be kicking
myself now if I chose not to test myself. If
you are dedicated, enthusiastic and love your
subject - go for it! My interviewers were
lovely and I actually managed to have a really
making friends who were going through the
same difficult admissions process as you, so
you could support each other. The application
process was very time consuming and involved
work that was quite different from what we
do in school, but my teachers were prepared
to give up their time to help us do our best at
all the different aspects of the application from essays to interviews. Interviews were
incredibly scary, but having other students
from our school in Oxford at the same time
made for a much more supportive and
reassuring environment.
nice time. Be proud, whatever happens.

I loved the Summer School. Despite being
nervous I settled in quickly and got a firsthand experience of just how amazing Oxford
University really is. I received really good
guidance from teachers at school about all
aspects of the application. Their experience
of being Oxbridge applicants is a real bonus. I
actually really enjoyed my interviews. I know
it sounds like a cliche (and impossible), it was
amazing to be able to communicate my ideas
to first-class academics in my subject. One
thing I would really like to say is that no one
should be intimidated by the process, or the
reputation of these institutions because
despite all the statistics, Oxbridge have a
uniquely
personal
selection
process
that
accounts for differing modes of thinking. I
applied for a really tough course and people
said I was crazy to do it, but it paid off in
the end. It's not too big a risk.

Be a writer, be a reader…
The English department is using technology to
encourage pupils to enter various writing
competitions. All of Years 7,8,9, and 10 have
received e-mails this week with links to national
writing competitions. One is the BBC Radio 2
500-word short story competition and the other
is the national Young Shakespeare writing
competition. The Radio 2 competition closes at
the end of February and the Young
Shakespeare competition closes towards the
end of March. Ten Year 9 pupils will also have
the opportunity to see Charlie Higson, bestselling comedian, actor and author of the Young
Bond and other wide-selling fiction titles at the
end of April. Interested pupils should write or
email to Mr Attwood explaining why they should
go…The first place has already gone to Damon
Dewdney who did just that. Damon’s
promptness and enthusiasm got him that all

A reminder about our Text Message/Emailing system:
If your child is ill or is not going to be in school, you can send a text message to the following number:
07624817054. This will alert the school to your child’s absence and will save you having to ring school
and leave a message with Reception. Please note that you cannot telephone on the text alert number.
If you prefer to leave a voicemail message, you can telephone on 08442393629. You will be asked a
series of questions about your child and his or her absence. This will then be noted in our absence
recording system.
You can also email any of the School Administrator’s direct:


Sixth Form – Mrs Charles – [email protected];
Upper School (Years 9, 10 and 11) - Mrs Garnett – [email protected]
Lower School (Years 7 and 8) - Mrs Ramsden – [email protected].
If you fail to notify us of an absence, we will send a text message to the mobile telephone number
registered with Emergency Contact Priority 1. A copy of the message will also be sent via email. If you
do not have a mobile number, your landline will be used. If you receive a text and your child is absent,
please reply to the text message, or telephone the number contained within the text and leave a
message for the Admin Team, who will register the absence immediately.
Please remember to keep the School Office updated with any new email addresses or changes to
mobile/landline numbers.
You can, of course, still telephone Reception and leave a message, but parents often want to ring before
office hours and we would encourage use of the above facilities, if at all possible.
