Burgess is entering her sixth season as an assistant coach for the Hampton University women’s basketball program. She came to Hampton after a year as an assistant at Norfolk State, where she was responsible for coaching the guards, in-state recruiting, film exchange and team academics. Burgess was a part of yet another championship effort in 2013-14, as the Lady Pirates again won 28 games and took their fifth straight MEAC Tournament title – an unprecedented feat in the history of the conference. Along the way, senior guard Nicole Hamilton was a First Team All-MEAC selection, and freshman Malia Tate-DeFreitas earned MEAC Rookie of the Year honors. Tate-DeFreitas averaged 18.1 points per game in 2013-14, while Hamilton averaged 13.1 points and 4.7 assists per contest. Hamilton also led the team in steals (63) and blocked shots (73). Hamilton, who played for Burgess at Phoebus High School, was named First Team All-MEAC after ranking third in the MEAC with 5.3 assists per game. Both Hamilton and Allen also averaged double figures in scoring that season. Burgess oversaw a senior backcourt in 2011-12 that included Jericka Jenkins and Choicetta McMillian, both of whom averaged more than 13 points a game, while Jenkins – a First Team All-MEAC selection – was fifth in the nation with just over seven assists a contest. McMillian, who led the MEAC with 82 3-pointers, was named Second Team All-MEAC. Burgess oversaw a talented backcourt in 2010-11, one that included First Team All-MEAC selection Jenkins – who led the team in scoring and finished the season second in the nation in assists per game (7.0). She also coached McMillian and Hamilton. In her first year with the Lady Pirates, Burgess was reunited with senior guard Whitney Hill, who also played for Burgess at Phoebus. Burgess helped guide Hill to her lone MEAC Tournament crown, as the Lady Pirates went 20-12 and 124 in conference play. Sophomore guard Bernadette Fortune averaged 9.5 points a game last season, earning Second Team All-MEAC honors. Prior to coming to Norfolk State, Burgess spent six years (2002-08) as the head girls basketball coach at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va. The Phantoms were 73-67 in her tenure, making three trips to the Eastern Region tournament. During her tenure at Phoebus, Burgess coached against David Six, who was the head girls basketball coach at Peninsula District rival Hampton High School. Before coming to Phoebus, Burgess was the first woman to lead the women’s basketball program at Virginia Union University. She coached at VUU from 1999 through 2001, going 13-39 in that span. From 1992-99, Burgess was the head girls basketball coach at Huguenot High School in Richmond, Va. She was named Dominion District Coach of the Year in 1997 after leading Huguenot to a 14-9 record. The following year, the Lady Falcons were runners-up in the Dominion District Tournament. In her 14 years as a high school head coach, Burgess mentored several players who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, including former Howard University standout Essence Coggins (Huguenot) and former Lady Pirate Hill (Phoebus). From 2005-08, Burgess served as the head coach for the 16-and-under team of the Boo Williams Summer League. Her team won the Christopher Newport University Team Camp championship in 2005 and had a runner-up finish in 2008. Burgess was a four-year Black College All-American at Delaware State University from 1985-89. She was named to the MEAC All-Rookie team and ended her career with the Lady Hornets as the school’s No. 2 alltime leading scorer with 1,807 points. As a sophomore, she led the team in scoring (17.9 points a game) and rebounding (7.3 rebounds a contest) and was named to the All-MEAC First Team. She also led Delaware State in scoring as a junior with 17.1 points per game and earned All-MEAC First Team honors. She was Delaware State’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1988-89 and led the Lady Hornets to the 1989 MEAC Tournament Championship Game. Burgess graduated from Delaware State in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and was inducted to the Delaware State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. She also received her master’s degree in sports management from California (Pa.) University. Burgess is a native of Richmond, Va. and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. 2014-15 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY LADY PIRATES ASSISTANT COACHES BRIAN DAVIS & TIM VALENTINE Brain Davis is entering his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Hampton University women’s basketball team after a three-year stint as a high school coach in Alabama. Head coach David Six was named MEAC Coach of the Year for the third time, while senior forward Alyssa Bennett was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year and freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas was named MEAC Rookie of the Year. “We came up short in the NCAA Tournament; obviously, the season didn’t end the way we wanted it to,” Six said, “but overall, I thought we had a very solid season.” If the Lady Pirates are to make it six in a row, they’ll do so without Bennett and guard Nicole Hamilton, two pillars of the program’s recent success. But it’s not like the cupboard is bare at the Convocation Center; Six returns Tate-DeFreitas, as well as a number of other key contributors from 2013-14. In addition, Hampton brings in seven newcomers and a new assistant coach in Tim Valentine (by way of Georgetown). So the question for 2014-15 becomes: can the streak continue? And what history will be made along the way? RETURNERS It’s not often a freshman is a cornerstone for a program, but that’s exactly what Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) was in 2013-14. The MEAC Rookie of the Year led the team and ranked fourth in the conference in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per contest. She reached the 20-point mark 10 times in her first season, and twice she eclipsed 30 points – including a career-best 36 points against Utah State on Nov. 29. In addition, Tate-DeFreitas was named Second Team All-MEAC, the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Rookie of the Year, and VaSID Second Team All-State. Junior Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) will also return to the Lady Pirates backcourt, coming off a 2013-14 season in which she averaged 3.7 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. Jordan scored in double figures twice last season, tying her career high of 13 points against Florida A&M on Dec. 7. Also returning to Hampton’s backcourt in 2014-15: junior Blake Jenkines (Clarksville, Tenn.) and sophomore Bayley Coleman-Cox (Durham, N.C.). The Lady Pirates will have an experienced duo in the frontcourt, led by redshirt junior forward Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.). Ward was second on the team and fourth in the MEAC in rebounding last season, averaging 6.1 per contest. She grabbed double-digit rebounds 13 times, including a careerhigh and school-record 23 against Virginia Tech. Ward also recorded her only double-double of the season, with 10 points and 10 rebounds, in the MEAC Tournament championship game against Coppin State. Redshirt junior forward Tyler Hobgood (Oxford, N.C.) also returns to the Hampton frontcourt, coming off a 2013-14 campaign in which she played in 21 games, made two starts, and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game. The Miami transfer grabbed a season-best nine rebounds against Maryland Eastern Shore on Feb. 10, and her season high of seven points came against Morgan State on Jan. 20. NEWCOMERS Of the seven newcomers currently on the Lady Pirates roster, four of them come from other Div. I schools. Senior guard Kyani White (Manassas, Va.) transferred over from East Carolina, while junior guard Kristine Rose (Miramar, Fla.) comes over from Xavier and redshirtjunior forward Lindsay Williams (Bowie, Md.) was at Mount St. Mary’s before heading to Anne Arundel Community College. In addition, senior guard Jackie Marshall (Hackensack, N.J.) played at Iona. Williams averaged 15.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game last season for Anna Arundel, earning All-Conference honors, while Rose played in seven games for Xavier in 2012-13. Six anticipates that White will spend much of the season running point. “There will be a few new faces that people don’t know,” Six said, “but we bring back Malia, who was fantastic for us last season, our leading There are currently two freshmen on the squad: forwards Kaylah Lupoe scorer, and we’ll look for her to lead us this season.” (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Mikayla Sayle (Hampton, Va.). Lupoe, regarded as the top post player in the state of Arizona, averaged 12.4 points and 8.5 But Tate-DeFreitas won’t be alone in the backcourt; she’ll be joined by rebounds as a senior at Mountain Pointe High School, while Sayle is a senior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.), who had a breakout junior product of Hampton High and has known Six for much of her life. season in 2013-14. Cole was fourth on the team in scoring last season at 9.4 points per game, but starting with Brown on Dec. 29, she averSayle averaged 11.4 points per game as a senior, leading Hampton aged 13.0 points per game over the last 21 games of the season – inHigh to 15 wins. cluding a career-best 30-point effort against Virginia Tech on Jan. 1.
