Style Guide - Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, USA

Style Guide
Introduction
To Chi Alpha personnel and staff:
Welcome to the Chi Alpha Style Guide. The purpose of this guide is to help those who
wish to use our logo, name, brand use them properly and consistently. There are many ways to
showcase our brand—on t-shirts, pamphlets, online, banners, and the like—and there are many
ways to do so incorrectly. The National Chi Alpha Ministry Center wishes to have an image
consistent among our 300+ campuses and we hope this style guide will help you to do so.

The Ministry
Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, U.S.A. is a ministry affiliated with the Assemblies of God
found on more than 300 secular campuses across the country. The National Chi Alpha Ministry
Center makes its home in Springfield, Missouri at the National Leadership and Resource Center
(NLRC). The statements and values below are in line with the values of the Assemblies of God.
Mission Statement
We reconcile students to Christ, equipping them through Spirit-filled communities of prayer,
worship, fellowship, discipleship and mission to transform the university, the marketplace and
the world.
Vision Statement
We are a Spirit-empowered, diverse community of believers on university campuses, declaring
in word and lifestyle our faith in Jesus Christ, equipped to fulfill our purpose in God's global
plan.
Core Values
These core values represent Chi Alpha Campus Ministries’ most deeply held beliefs. They serve
to guide our decisions, our leadership practices, and our community life. All our organizational
actions will reflect these core values.
1. Community
Community is a covenantal value shaping our mission to the university, and our priority
to come together for biblically commanded action. The salvation of Jesus offers the
forgiveness of sins and the incorporation into the people of God. As a collegiate
community we are to be "salt and light" showing to the world what it means to
authentically love God and one's neighbor.
2. Creativity
God is first revealed in Scripture as a creative God. We are committed to achieving
commitment that appreciates the proven with an adaptive open eye to what He has in
store today and beyond. His Spirit will release to us new ways, ideas, and plans.
3. Diversity
A diverse community reflects a reconciliation of students to Jesus across all campus
demographics. Each student possesses unique gifts, and we seek to encourage their full
implementation in the community. We also accept diverse methods and approaches to
ministry. We celebrate these unique ministry expressions as the demonstration of what
God is doing on our campuses and encourage their effective application.
4. Excellence
Striking performance, exceptional virtue, and continuous improvement exemplify
excellence. Excellence goes the "second mile" by doing the best possible job. It calls out
of us far more than we can possibly imagine. Excellence guides how we make significant
3
choices. It causes us to discover our true God-given capabilities. Excellence depicts our
approach to leadership, work, organization, and our life together.
5. Integrity
Integrity describes the state of sound moral uprightness. It is characterized by honesty,
truthfulness, respect, and sincerity. Integrity in its simplest biblical definition means
wholeness or completeness. Integrity invites oneself into a partnership with the Holy
Spirit. This fosters an atmosphere of credibility and plausibility among those to whom we
minister and within our communities on campus. Integrity promotes long-term success.
6. Servant-Leadership
Servant-leadership is a practice that places the good of those led and their progressive
maturity over the self-interest of the leader. It shares power and status for the sake of the
common good of each individual and the community. Its chief motive is to serve-first, as
opposed to lead-first. The final goal is to empower others to become servants themselves.
Name Use
In the Bible, the apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:20, “We are therefore Christ’s
ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s
behalf, be reconciled to God.”
Our movement of campus ministries finds its identity in this passage. We believe that
God longs to have each and every person be reconciled to Himself, and that the way that
reconnection happens is through the representation of his people. Each of us who takes on the
identity of “Christian” becomes Christ’s ambassador – or christou apostoloi in Greek, which we
shorten to the first letters “Chi” and “Alpha” or XA. Our name is our constant reminder that each
of us has a real part to play in this world. We each can carry Him within us to bring Him closer
to the people around us.
The following are correct ways to use our name:
• Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, U.S.A.
• Chi Alpha or XA
• Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship (For use on a particular campus, but not the ministry as a
whole)
The following are incorrect ways to use our name:
• Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, USA
• Chi Alpha Campus Ministries USA
• Chi Alpha Campus Ministries U.S.A.
• CACMUSA or XACMUSA
• CACM or XACM

Photos
For the Directory
An annual mass email will be sent out to all affiliated staff asking for updated or new
photos. It will also be announced on the staff Facebook group as another reminder. Photos in
the directory should be of high resolution and something nice you would give for a job
application. A headshot-style image is preferred. If your photo was taken by a professional
photographer, we will need a release form from him or her. We accept releases provided by the
photographer or you can email [email protected] for a copy of our photographer release form.
Those who fill out a CMA or CMIT application should email their photo to
[email protected]. For missionaries who have children in their photo, it is wise to make sure
these are updated annually as the children grow. During national events, a photo booth is a good
way to acquire updated photos that meet our needs.
In designing the annual directory, these photos will be edited to be black and white in
color and cropped if needed. If an affiliated staff member does not provide a photo, a blank box
with “Photo not available” will be in place of the photo. There should not be any photos
substituted for a missionary who has not sent in a suitable photo.
For Other Publications and the Web
Publications should not use stock photos where possible. Chi Alpha will provide photos
to the designer from our photo library, whether they are of students or campus buildings. The
Reach the U Institute is a good opportunity to capture photos like these. Photos require releases
from the people in the pictures. Please email [email protected] for a copy of the model release
form.
Article Submission and Writer’s Guidelines for Connection
Chi Alpha welcomes submissions for our publications under the following guidelines:
1. Please keep in mind our Assemblies of God views as well as our broad audience of
readers, which include donors, alumni, and missionary affiliates.
2. Pitches for story ideas, already written article submissions, and photos can be emailed
to [email protected]. The issues of Connection are planned ahead of time and may not
mesh well with your story idea or article; however, there is always the blog and eBytes to consider.
3. With your pitch, please include an estimated word count, names of people you would
interview, and date the article could be finished. If you have been published before,
please provide a link or copy of the published piece as an attachment.
4. We highly encourage writers to submit digital high resolution photos concerning the
article he or she is writing with the finished piece. Photos require releases from the
people in the pictures. Please email [email protected] for a copy of the model release
form.
5. Writers should send a photo of him/herself as well as a two-to-three sentence bio to
include with the byline.
6. Pitches and written submissions should be attached as a Word document, not in the
body of the email. Photos should also be attached to the email, not in the body of the
email or in the Word document.
7
7. Articles will be edited for grammar, style, content, and length.
Payment
Writers must agree to sign a Work for Hire contract and, if we do not already have one on
file, submit a W-9 form. Missionary writers who have a national account with us will have their
payment included with their monthly check. Other writers will receive a check in the mail. We
pay $10 for each blog entry we accept, and pieces written for e-Bytes are on a volunteer basis.
