contribution of women leaders

TOGETHER, WE ARE
CHANGING THE LIVES OF
WOMEN AND GIRLS IN BC
L
ike no other time in history, women face an extraordinary
number of choices. Choices associated with careers, family,
education, finances — the list goes on. While access to
these choices brings exceptional opportunity, it can also bring
much pressure and stress. How do we ensure we make the
best choices? Where can we find support when making these
decisions?
The Minerva Foundation for BC Women is committed to helping
women find and follow a path that leads to meaningful, lasting
life changes. With the support of our donors, partners, staff and
volunteers, the Minerva Foundation directly impacted the lives of
more than 400 women and girls in 2013.
In leadership development, we delivered four programs across
the province, allowing women to learn from one another and
determine next steps in achieving their personal, educational
and career goals. In May 2013, the three-year pilot initiative
of Women Leading the Way™ culminated in the Changing
the Face of Leadership Conference, where we celebrated the
accomplishments of program participants and generated another
round of exceptional dialogue with industry leaders about valuesbased leadership. We continued our Education Awards program in partnership
with 24 accredited educational institutions across BC. Together,
we supported 93 women to achieve their education goals, and
awarded a total of $191,675.
The Minerva Foundation connected women in their search for
meaningful employment through our Minerva Helping Women
Work™ programs. The programs were delivered in Vancouver,
and also Fort St. John, Bella Coola and Cranbrook through our
Combining Our Strength™ initiative.
We celebrated leadership, excellence and philanthropy of women
in the field of Science at our annual Women In™ luncheon, with
over 250 men and women in attendance. At our In Tribute To
event, we shared stories about the impact of our programs,
connected like-minded values-based leaders in the community,
and profiled our Tribute Tree campaign.
As with any not-for-profit, the heart and
soul of the organization lives with the
people involved.
I’d like to thank our board members for their dedication through a
busy year, along with the remarkable team of staff and volunteers,
who commit daily to the success of our organization.
Thank you for your support in changing the face of leadership in
British Columbia.
Kathryn Kolbuch,
Board Chair

PROGRAM UPDATES
Education Awards
The Education Awards program brings together people who want
to make a difference with women who aspire to beat the odds
to create better futures for themselves, their families and their
communities. The Education Awards support women in financial
need who also face other barriers including single mothers,
immigrants, mature students, Aboriginal women and women
studying in non-traditional fields.
In 2013, with the help of our donors and the matching funds from
partner institutions, the Minerva Foundation granted more than
$191,675 in Education Awards to more than 93 women across BC.
“Your past doesn’t determine your future but
whatever path you choose, you need to live it
with pride and dignity because you are a leader
and an elder of the future.”
- Cat Schembmri, Education Award Recipient

live and work from my values and because of that, I
know my purpose.”

Combining Our
Strength™
Through the Combining Our Strength™ (COS) initiative, the Minerva
Foundation delivers its programming for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
women in a way that is both geographically and culturally relevant.
In 2013, the Minerva Foundation provided program opportunities to
the following communities: Bella Coola, Chetwynd/Moberly Lake,
Cranbrook, Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Kamloops and the Lower
Mainland.
Learning to Lead™ COS
Nearly 40 women attended the two-and-a-half day leadership
development workshop in Vancouver, travelling from across BC
to participate. Upon completion of the Vancouver portion of the
program, participants returned to their home communities and
continued their leadership development through our Community
Circles*.
Minerva Helping Women Work™ COS
Programs were delivered to 45 women in communities across BC,
with eight days of intensive workshops in Fort St. John, Bella Coola
and Cranbrook.
*Community Circles - COS Community Circles take place over
six sessions, during which participants develop powerful, trusting
alliances with other women from their communities, build leadership
skills and participate in a community project. Community Circles are
designed with flexibility to ensure that the diverse needs of participants
and communities are met. The Minerva Foundation provides ongoing
support to COS Community Circles throughout the year.

“I couldn’t help but be left in awe by how much I have changed. The funny thing is, it was in me all along, I just was too
afraid to dig in myself to find it. Minerva forced me to be fearless — to not be unafraid but to be afraid and do things
anyway. Minerva Learning to Lead, you left me in awe.” - C. KHONDOKER, GRADE 11 STUDENT LEADER, L2L BC 2013
Leadership Development
