apfpm 2013 Project Management Achievement Award Winners

apfpm’s Asia Pacific
2013 PROJECT MANAGEMENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
The 2013 apfpm Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) were an outstanding success
with 15 projects nominated in 4 categories from 7 Member Associations (MA). The projects
submitted varied markedly in complexity, cost, location and the challenges they faced, but clearly
demonstrated that quality project management is thriving across the Asia Pacific.
The 2013 awards program commenced with each MA being given the opportunity to provide
submissions in any of the following categories.
The processes used by different MAs to determine those submissions they would put forward to
apfpm for judging vary significantly. Some MAs have an existing national PMAA competition which
is used to select their contenders. Others who do not have a national competition used a MA panel
to confirm that their submissions were of a suitable quality. The result was 15 high quality
submissions.
As the Award Chair and Chief Judge I was very fortunate that MAs were able to nominate an
excellent panel of judges to make what would end up being a very close decision in a number of
categories. Each project is judged out of 100 by each of three judges giving an aggregate score out
of 300. If another project is judged to be within 10 points of the winning entry it is awarded a High
Commendation. MAs represented on the judging panel included: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, and Singapore.
I would like to thank all of the judges for their efforts. Requiring each submission to be judged
independently by three judges takes real dedication on their part.
One area where apfpm is quite different to other award schemes is that, due to the geographic
spread of our members, once the judging is complete and the scores collated we advise each
winning MA that they have a winning entry and ask if a delegate from the project could be present
at the awards ceremony. The result was that the majority of our winners were able to share with us
in the excitement of their success.
This year the awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the Indian National Congress. apfpm
would like to thank the Project Management Association of India for their very generous effort in
hosting the awards. The ceremony was a great success and a true celebration of excellence in
project management. The following awards were presented on the 1st December in New Delhi, India

2014 Asia Pacific PM Awards will be held at the apfpm Asia Pacific Congress in Beijing Nov. 2014.
The culmination of an excellent evening at the apfpm Awards was the award of Project of the Year
to the Redevelopment of Yau Tong Estate Phase 4 (Domain) from Hong Kong.
There will be some exciting changes to the apfpm PMAA in 2014. It is our intention to commence an
individual project manager award and a separate category for humanitarian projects. Both these
categories will then enable the winner to submit for an IPMA award in the following year.
2013 marked apfpm’s third Awards program and it’s success will continue to encourage the
participation of other MAs in the coming years. I would encourage all MAs to consider using the
2014 apfpm PMAA guidelines to reward excellence in project management in their own nation with
winning submissions being provided with the opportunity to compete at apfpm and IPMA.
All the very best for 2014
Mark Patch
apfpm PMAA Chair
