A Message from Our President
“Where’s the fire?” was the theme of this year’s
annual banquet. For those of you who were
unable to join us, you missed a spectacular
display of glamour, a red-carpet award reception
and an incredible video music production
performed by the Chamber’s very own Board of
Directors. The Board musically touted our
belief that “This Chamber Is On Fire”, sung to
the tune of the well-loved Billy Joel song “We
Didn’t Start The Fire”.
So where is the friction? The Chamber is the
friction. We are the match-plate through which
advocacy, programming, and marketing cause
that spark to ignite. We help to create
opportunities for interaction that challenge the
status quo and stimulate the warmth that ensues
from constantly connecting divergent points of
view, and encouraging interests to intersect.

together to grow the region. So why do we
believe this Chamber is on fire?
There are three components to a fire: the flint,
the friction, and the fuel. Many who are reading
this message are the torch-bearers of the
MetroWest/495 region. Some are Board
members, others committee members, still
others, sponsors of the Chamber and our many
activities. They are the ones who provide the
leadership and vision for this chamber’s success
throughout the region each and every day.
These folks are what I would consider the flint
because if you encounter them, they will spark
your interest in creating connections and in
becoming involved.

From our Outgoing Chair of the Board
As the year draws to a close, it is important to reflect on all we have accomplished throughout the region.
The MetroWest Chamber of Commerce continues to fight for a better business climate and we work hard every
day to provide you with The Power of Connection.
Marc Terry
Mirick O’Connell
In the legislative arena, we advocated against tax increases, and joined forces and voices with many other
business organizations to accomplish the repeal of the computer services tax. Through our participation in the
MetroWest Alliance for Regional Economic Development, we worked with our municipalities to assess and
improve their ability to attract and retain businesses using the EDSAT program. To build upon our success, for
the third straight year, we have been awarded a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Business Development
that will enable us to put another $50,000 into growing business in our region.
We have also provided you with numerous opportunities for visibility for your organization. The Taste of MetroWest continues to be
a rousing success, drawing over 50 restaurants and caterers, 20 non-profit partners and more than 1,000 people, to sample the region’s
best. We introduced new programs, including TradeWorks, a program that combines the best elements of trade shows and traditional
networking events. We have also created the Women’s Fun Federation (WFF) to enhance connections among women in business, and
On the Rise, a new Young Professionals group for the under 40 set. And we have fine-tuned
our College Initiative to provide guidance and contacts for our future business leaders, making participation a credit worthy program.
People are taking notice. We are drawing more members than ever. And not just from the towns we have traditionally
represented. More companies are coming from Marlborough, Medway, Milford, Bellingham and municipalities all over the region to
become a part of the only 5-Star Chamber west of Boston. Like any organization, the Chamber has a vision. Our vision is for a
strong, vibrant Chamber that serves as the central point for business in the MetroWest and 495 region – to be the
powerhouse organization between Boston and Worcester. This is a regional vision, one that is not confined to our traditional service
area and so we have formally expanded our service area to encompass the more than twenty communities we already serve. I believe
that there has never been a more exciting time to be a part of this 118-year old organization and I want to thank our dedicated staff
– Bonnie, Phyllis, Patty, Beth and Jill for all their hard work. I want to thank my fellow board members for their energy and commitment. And I want to thank all of you for your membership and your active participation because nothing we have accomplished has
been accomplished alone. Indeed, The Power of Connection cannot happen if we do not do it together.
Marc Terry
From our Incoming Chair of the Board
This is an exciting period to chair the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce! The regional economy is growing,
our businesses are growing, and the Chamber is growing.
The MetroWest Chamber of Commerce continues to foster growth and expansion in the region through its
business advocacy, strategic networking and collaboration with other regional partners.
Kevin Foley
The TJX Companies, Inc.
Our success has been recognized as more organizations throughout the Route 128 to Route 495 belt have
joined the Chamber. We will continue to strongly advocate for policies that encourage growth for our
members, utilizing the positive relationships we have established with our legislative and congressional
delegations and the Patrick administration. Our programs, promotions and networking opportunities allow
our members to increase their visibility and brand awareness.
I hope you continue to support our programs and efforts in 2014. By working together, we can create a strong economic
environment and continue to promote growth and success for this region.

Caring for Our Communities: MetroWest Medical Center and You
A few minutes with MetroWest Medical Center’s New CEO, Barbara Doyle
What makes MetroWest Medical Center different than other surrounding hospitals?
MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick has a long history of providing excellent
care to the communities we serve. Our physicians, staff and volunteers are members of our
community caring for others in the community, making our hospitals a special place to work and to
receive care.
Why is the partnership with Tufts Medical Center Important to the MetroWest area?
Our partnership with Tufts Medical Center is a perfect example of our dedication to those who live right in our communities. We have
Tufts specialists on site at our hospitals and in our communities who work closely with the expert MWMC physicians to assure that
people in MetroWest get the very best in healthcare.
A new perspective from a leader is a great thing. What are your first impressions of MetroWest Medical Center as the new CEO?
I am new to the job as CEO here, but I am so pleased to be here, especially as I talk with people about MetroWest Medical Center. I am proud of the compassionate
and skilled staff – and that includes everyone who works here no matter what they do – it is part of what makes MetroWest Medical Center so special. I am
impressed by our physicians and the caliber of their practice and dedication to their patients. I am also humbled when I talk with patients who have been treated at
MetroWest Medical Center. Sickness is difficult, not only for patients, but for their families as well, and when I hear glowing stories about how wonderful their care
was and that they would recommend the hospital to others, I know that MetroWest Medical Center’s people are a gift to the community.
How does MetroWest Medical Center deal with all the changes in health care that seem to happen almost daily?
Some say it is a very hard time to be in health care, given healthcare reform at the state and national level, the changes happening with insurance companies and the
shift of more care into the home, to name a few. I think it is the most exciting time to be in health care. As a well-respected and vibrant community hospital,
MetroWest Medical Center is able to successfully change with the times and also to change to meet the needs of the community.
Why should people choose MetroWest Medical Center for their care?
You can always count on MetroWest Medical Center for skilled, compassionate, timely health care, when you
and your family need it. In addition, we are always striving to be better, so that we are always the hospital of
choice, not only as a place to work, but the best place to receive care. That gives me great peace of mind and
I hope it does the same for you. Because the reason we are here is YOU.

Outstanding!
Every year, the Chamber is fortunate to have many
members receive recognition, awards and accolades.
We are proud of our members’ accomplishments and
so, when Chamber President and CEO Bonnie
Biocchi was selected by the Worcester Business
Journal as an Outstanding Woman in Business, we
were justifiably delighted. Biocchi, who has been at
the helm of the Chamber for nearly 4 years, was
recognized for successfully implementing a new
vision for the Chamber, for promoting a spirit of
engagement and volunteerism and for her unique
ability to develop cross collaboration across all
sectors of the public and private sector.

2013 Economic Development & Public Policy Committee Update
Under the leadership of Paul Bauer from
Bowditch and Dewey, the committee had a
busy year! Multiple special federal and state
elections, big tax policy legislation, and access
to high-profile speakers shaped the subcommittee’s actions. Here are some highlights:
• In the early part of the year, we invited
two high level Administration officials for
Exec-Connect: EOHED Secretary Greg
Bialecki and Transportation Secretary Rich
Davey, to better understand the Governor’s
budget
proposal
for FY14.
Sponsored
by Day
Pitney, this
event
enlightened
our
membership on the need for significant
transportation and education improvements
and the corresponding tax increases which
were being sought to fund them. • After reviewing the Governor’s tax
increase proposal, we disseminated
information to our membership including two
different analyses of the proposed impacts
(MA Taxpayer Foundation and MA Budget &
Policy Center). We also published an Op-Ed
piece in support of earmarking funding for
transportation measures.
• We hosted a March Legislative Event at
the Verve Crowne Plaza, which drew over 100
people. The event, sponsored by Santander
Bank, focused on the state budget, specifically
discussing Education, Taxes, Economic
Development & Health Care. Nine members
from our legislative delegation were present
and offered insight into transportation
funding and infrastucture support for our
region. Ongoing work included the following:
• Implemented a Regional Economic
Development Organization (REDO) state
grant of $35K to continue indentifying the
Chamber as the point of contact for businesses
in twenty communities, offering businesses
and municipalities options for greater
interaction and a providing a conduit to create
business friendly policies. We continued to
discuss the results of the Economic Development Self-Assessment Tool (EDSAT)
for the towns of Framingham, Natick,
Southborough, and Westborough, assisting
communities in developing business-friendly
strategies to support strong economic
development. • Subcommittee members attended
municipal economic development monthly
meetings in: Southborough, Holliston,
Framingham, Natick and Westborough.
• With guidance from our lobbyist, the
Victory Group, the committee identified
legislation that would impact local businesses.
• We participated in a successful effort to
keep a single tax rate in Southborough and
advocated to the Framingham BOS to further
reduce the split tax rate.
• Monitored ballot question initiatives: repeal of gas tax, minimum wage increase,
mandatory paid sick leave, reducing the
Income Tax to 5%.
• Received new REDO grant ($50,000)
from Massachusetts Office of Business
Development to support economic
development initiatives throughout the region,
including a transit-oriented development
study for Framingham and Natick.
• Finally, we were instrumental in
educating the Governor’s Administration
regarding fallout from the newly passed “Tech
Tax”, which would have had a deleterious
effect on our many technology and innovation
companies. Chamber President Bonnie
Biocchi and several Chamber members met
with Department of
Revenue and
Administration officials
to advocate for repeal.
One of the originators
of the repeal legislation
was MetroWest State
Senator Karen Spilka.
We thank outgoing chairperson Paul Bauer,
and welcome incoming chairperson Marc
Terry from Mirick O’Connell. Additional
2013 subcommittee members were: Peter
Barbieri, Carla C. Cataldo, Peter Chisholm,
Marc Jacobs, Jim Lynch, JoAnne O’Leary,
Gwene McBride, Paul Mina, Bill McGinley,
Bill Pezzoni, Steve Roche and Katherine
Wellington.
If you have an interest in influencing policy
and advocating for business, the Public Policy
Committee would love you to join us. We
meet on the first Wednesday of the month at
8:30am. Carla C. Cataldo, Member, Proposals, Etc.

TRADEWorks! sponsored by TD Bank
As part of our on-going effort to provide
you with meaningful programming to help grow
your business, the MetroWest Chamber continually
evaluates its programming to ensure the highest
return on investment. This year, we re-defined our
traditional breakfast networking series and kicked
off TradeWorks! sponsored by TD Bank.
TradeWorks! is a table top trade show and
networking series established to highlight
MetroWest Chamber member businesses and
promote them in low-key tradeshow style.
Members showcase their business, products and
services in a tabletop display and then have an
opportunity to participate in several rounds of
formal networking, enabling them to achieve the
benefits of both simultaneously. While there is no
limit to the number of networking participants, the
maximum number of exhibitors is 20 allowing for
a more approachable display and networking event.
September’s TradeWorks! inaugural event at the
Sheraton Framingham attracted about 100
attendees in addition to the exhibitors. “This
promises to be a convenient 1-2 punch for smaller
businesses that may not have the budget to attend a
large trade show but still hope to capture additional
business from the compressed interaction of a trade
show environment” said Chamber President,
Bonnie Biocchi. If you want to start the New Year
off right by getting your business front and center,
this is a great opportunity to do so!

WFF - Women’s Fun Federation
Nearly every
chamber and
professional
organization
has some sort of
women-focused
networking group.
We at the MWCoC, thought long
and hard about how to differentiate ourselves from
the maddening crowd, as they say. It was important to us to create a program that would make
networking anxiety free and something that would
appeal to every woman and viola’ the Women’s Fun
Federation (WFF) was born.
The WFF was developed as a take-off on the
male-dominated world of the WWF (World
Wrestling Federation). While smashing, bashing
and grunting may amuse some, we decided our
emphasis would be on helping women make
connections in an informal and entertaining
setting. Every other month, the WFF meets at
a new MetroWest location to nosh, learn and
listen and in the process, promote camaraderie.
Hundreds of ladies (and men too!) have enjoyed
these free networking events which have included
a MetroWest Jeopardy Smackdown at the Verve,
Shop ‘Til You Drop at the Salvation Army Thrift
Store, a Chocolate and Wine Pairing tutorial
at Chocolate Therapy and “ShopMania” at the
Hampton Inn.
If you want to meet some fabulous new women
and inject a bit more fun into your jam-packed
world, and want it to dovetail with your personal
and professional life, look no more…the WFF is
for you.
If your goal is to meet new people in 2014 join us
and have some fun in the process.

Fine Tuning the College Initiative
In January 2011, the MetroWest Chamber of
Commerce unveiled a College Initiative program to
engage college students as future business leaders.
Since that time, the Chamber has partnered with
Framingham State University (FSU), Clark
University Graduate School of Management and
MassBay Community College to develop a
customized program in which students become
full-fledged members of the MWCoC with access
to all the benefits that Chamber members enjoy. As
part of the program, students are paired with a
mentor, who provides assistance with “soft-skill”
development such as networking, interviewing and
navigating workplace etiquette.
In 2013 the College Initiative underwent a
complete transformation when FSU and the
Chamber jointly chose to implement the program
within a credit-bearing class. This pilot program
allows students in the marketing and
communications field to earn credit through their
coursework, involvement in networking
opportunities, participation in “career days” and
one-to-one mentoring sessions. This fall, Bob Fields
and his team at Framingham based CommCreative
hosted another immensely informative session
outlining career opportunities in the field of
marketing and advertising.
Chamber President Bonnie Biocchi is a guest
speaker throughout the semester covering topics
such as professionalism, interviewing and
negotiating, and career development providing
students insight into employer expectations and
better preparing them to enter the workforce upon
graduation.
The long-term goals of the College Initiative are
retaining our young and talented individuals for the
region’s workforce, encouraging emerging leaders to
recognize the value of community and professional
engagement and ensuring that these future leaders
remain dedicated to creating vibrant economies as
they pursue a career in their chosen field.
MetroWest/495 - TMA
2013 has been a successful year for the
MetroWest/495 Transportation Management
Association (TMA). The TMA continues its
mission of providing sustainable transportation
options to its members throughout the MetroWest
and 495 Region. As a joint program of the
MetroWest and Marlborough Regional Chambers
of Commerce, the TMA is involved in several
economic development projects that support
member’s transportation and planning initiatives.
In 2014 the TMA will examine vanpool options for
members, increase carpool usage, and evaluate
opportunities for shuttles to existing MBTA
stations. We will continue to work with the MBTA
to advocate for enhanced commuter rail schedules,
with a focus on providing workforce solutions such
as reverse commute and last mile options that are
cost-effective and sustainable. To better serve our
members, the TMA has teamed up with several
municipalities to evaluate and enhance route
options with the MetroWest Regional Transit
Authority.
Under production, is the TMA’s very first
MetroWest Commuter map which will identify all
public transportation stops as well as safe bike routes
to and from our member sites. We are also actively
involved in bike safety initiatives and advocates for
resources for the bikers in the region. The TMA
will continue to be a committed partner in the
region as we facilitate our employer’s future growth.
We hope you will join us, as 2014 will be an exciting
year to be a part of the TMA!

Community Outreach
The Community Outreach Initiative was created
for two important reasons: to help match skilled
workers to employment opportunities and to
connect Chamber members with volunteer
opportunities that will make a difference in their
communities. The committee identifies job
openings in local companies and publicizes
candidate’s abilities through a monthly newsletter
that identifies job seekers in five categories: adults
with developmental delays, displaced adult
workers, new Americans, veterans and youth. In
2014 we look forward to working with local
partners on our mission; we will be linking to
Employment and Training Resources, Natick
Service Council and the United Way to help
accomplish the goal of putting people back to
work!
Our volunteer initiative is also expanding. A
group of 15 volunteered at the Pearl Street
Cupboard and Café, serving those in need.
Another group volunteered at Habitat for
Humanity where a group of committed women
invested an entire day to building a house for a
family in need and during the holiday season, over
20 chamber members partnered with Natick town
officials to serve a wonderful lunch to 300 seniors
at the Natick Council on Aging.
Thank you to our wonderful Community
Outreach committee members: Jen Maseda, Beth
Cooper, Jim Giammarinaro, George Lonergan, Jim
Lynch, Natalie Saroufim, John Stone and Caroline
Cooke. These “foot soldiers” are constantly
advocating for the Chamber and are the primary
reason that the Community Outreach Initiative is
meeting its mission.
Ambassador Committee
The Ambassadors Committee has been busy this
year, welcoming 111new members and
encouraging them to make the most of their
investment in the MetroWest Chamber throughout the course of their first year. Networking is the
heart and soul of the Chamber, so Ambassadors
actively engage new members by helping to make
connection at programs and events and by keeping
in touch throughout the year as a resource and a
Chamber “buddy”. A member survey earlier this
year indicated that most Chamber members are
January 2014
active on social media, particularly Facebook and
LinkedIn. Ambassadors have begun asking new
members for their Facebook pages so that we can
connect online and have created a sub-group of
very active Digital Ambassadors. On a daily basis,
this group reaches out to our members, “liking”
their Facebook pages and posts and re-posting or
sharing with their own audiences as well. Over
500 people already “Like” us on the Chamber
Facebook page! Next up will be increased activity
on Twitter and LinkedIn.
Congratulations to Steve Levine who was honored
as Ambassador of the Year at the Chamber’s
Annual Meeting in November. Steve has been a
member of the Chamber for nearly 20 years, first
in his role with Sovereign Bank and now with
Purple Ink Insurance. And before that, he actually
worked for the Chamber in membership
development. Ever cheerful, Steve is exemplary in
carrying out his Ambassador responsibilities - and
if you tell him when your birthday is, he’ll serenade
you every year!
Betsy Cross, Natick VNA

This Chamber is on Fire!
“Where’s the fire?” was the theme of this year’s annual banquet. The video music production performed by the Chamber’s
Board of Directors and sung to the tune of the Billy Joel song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” ended what was a spectcular
evening. Essentially a year-in-review, the photos and words performed that evening appear below. We hope this will give
you a snapshot of the who, the what and the where of the 2013 MetroWest Chamber of Commerce. And if you didnt see it
live go to www.metrowest.org and check out Robson Tino’s video.
