My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Christos Anesti! Christ is risen! This
proclamation isn’t just an event that
we celebrate on Pascha (Easter). It is
our Orthodox Christian battle cry!
We will for the next 40 days greet each
other with the words, Christ is risen!
Notice the present tense of the verb
“is.” Pascha is not an event in the past. It is an everpresent happening that fuels our living and vibrant faith!
Christ is alive and working through you and me. Christ is!
Right at this moment!
The significance of the Resurrection as a historical event is
simply incredible. It is the cornerstone of our spiritual substance. Christ’s resurrection galvanized His reluctant, disbelieving disciples. Out of their disillusionment emerged a
recommitted group who carried Christianity to the four corners of the world.
NIKOLAOS K. KANALOUPITIS
The importance of the Resurrection as a continuing event
for today, tomorrow and forever is even more profound. It
is victory over death. It is the promise of new and eternal
life. And it is our commitment to share this extraordinary
news to which each of us should rededicate ourselves this
Paschal season.

KIDS TO CAMP
The Parish Assembly and the Parish Council have established a program that any child of a Parishioner in
Good Standing, is invited to attend ONE WEEK (their choice of week) at the Metropolitan Boston Camp in
Contoocook, New Hampshire, the summer following their completion of 6th grade in our Church School or 6th
grade in our Greek School FREE OF CHARGE.
With generous donations from various organizations, ministries, individuals and bequests we are able to fund
this worthwhile endeavor. It is our belief that we must support the amazing camping ministry of our Metropolis and in addition, recommit and reconnect our children to the faith and fellowship of Orthodoxy.
We invite others that share our commitment to donate to the Kids to Camp Fund to maintain this valuable
undertaking.
If your child is interested in participating please fill out the following form and submit it to the church office
by April 1, 2014, so we may budget appropriately.
In addition, we will continue to help those needing financial assistance to send their children to camp. Please
see Fr Chris for this confidential support.

The Fresh Air fund is an independent not-for-profit agency providing free summer vacations to New York
City youngsters since 1877. Each summer, through the fund’s volunteer host family program, thousands of
inner-city children visit host families in the suburbs and small-town communities across 13 Northeastern
states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.
There is no such thing as a “typical” host family. They live in the suburbs, small towns and rural areas. They
have different types of homes and neighborhoods. Different financial profiles. Some have children of their
own, while others don’t. What they do have in common is room in their home and their heart and a desire to
share the simple joys of their communities with a Fresh Air Fund child.
Find out about hosting a child today! Fresh Air Fund children are boys and girls, ages 6 to 18, who live in
New York City. The majority are from low-income communities. They typically live in apartment buildings
and are more familiar with busy city blocks than quiet country roads, but the kids who participate in the host
family program are like any other — they want to play, laugh, make new friends and enjoy the simple pleasures of life away from the city.
The North of Boston trip dates are July 10 to 21, but alternate travel dates can be arranged.
Please reach Deborah Stephanides, North of Boston chairperson, at [email protected] or 978-744-8531 for
additional information.

ORTHODOX LIFE - March/April 2014
PALM SUNDAY- April 13
“So they took branches from
palm trees and went out to
meet Him crying ‘Hosanna!
Blessed is He who comes in
the name of the Lord, even the
King of Israel!’”(John 12:13)
My Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Great crowds went forth to meet Jesus as
He entered Jerusalem on that triumphant day
which we now commemorate as Palm Sunday.
They waved palms. Thousands of men, women and
children shouted with joy, “Hosanna, blessed is He
who comes in the name of the Lord!” They hailed
Jesus as King. The news that He had brought Lazarus back from the dead had spread like wildfire.
They cast their robes for Him to ride over. They
sang… They ran… They strewed the ground before Him with wild flowers.
On Palm Sunday this year, we too shall be
given palms. For just as Christ entered Jerusalem
many years ago, He will once again make a triumphant entry into our hearts this coming Holy
Week and Pascha. The important thing for all of
us on Palm Sunday is not to remember that Christ
entered Jerusalem many years ago; but that He
comes to us again in 2014. Not how He was received over 2,000 years ago, but how He will be
received by us in this topsy-turvy world of ours.
When Christ entered Jerusalem, He was hailed as
a King. When He comes to us today, shall we receive Him as our King?
Someone said once, “Kings? Kings are only
something to cheer for.” That person meant that
the human heart loves parades, and that a king is
merely a symbol. Christ is not that kind of a king.
A king we enclose in a beautifully decorated
church with fragrant incense, stirring hymns and
burning candles as if He were dead. He is a living
King who says to us today, “If any man would
come after me, let him deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me.” He is a king who challenges us during challenging times just like ours.
He is a king who gives purpose and meaning to life. A king who strengthens and heals. “No
man ever spoke as this man,” they said of Him.
“Who is this man that even the wind and the sea
obey him?”
The triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, which we will be celebrating again on Palm
Sunday, is a messianic event through which His
divine authority was declared. Palm Sunday summons all of us to behold our King: the Word of
God made flesh. We are called to behold Him not
simply as the one who came to us once riding on a
colt, but the one who is always present in His
Church, coming ceaselessly to us in power and glory at every celebration of the Holy Eucharist; in
every prayer and Sacrament. He is present in every act of love, kindness and mercy. He comes to
free us from all our fears and insecurities – “To
take solemn possession of our soul, and to be enthroned in our hearts.” He comes not only to deliver us from our deaths by His death and Resurrection, but also to make us capable of attaining the
perfect fellowship and union with Him. He, who is
King, who liberates us from the darkness of sin
and the bondage of death.
Thus, Palm Sunday summons us all to behold our King; and to behold the vanquisher of
death and the giver of life. Palm Sunday summons
us to accept both the rule and the kingdom of God
as the goal and content of our Christian life. We
draw our identity as Christians from Christ and
His Kingdom. The Kingdom is Christ – His indescribable power, boundless mercy and incomprehensible abundance given freely to man. The
Kingdom does not lie at some point or place in the
distant future. In the words of Scripture, the Kingdom of God is not only at hand (Matt.3:2;4:17), it
is within us (Luke 17:21).
The Kingdom is a present reality and a future realization. The Kingdom of God is the life of
the Holy Trinity in the World. It is the Kingdom of
holiness, goodness, truth, beauty, love, peace and
joy. These qualities are not works of the human
spirit. They proceed from the life of God and reveal God. Christ himself is the Kingdom. He is the
God-Man who brought God down to earth.
Palm Sunday then, my dear brothers and
sisters, summons us all to behold our King – the
suffering servant. We cannot understand Jesus’

Kingship apart from His passion which we will
begin commemorating on the eve of Palm Sunday
and throughout all of Holy Week; a passion with
infinite love for the Father, the Holy Spirit, and all
Creation. In His inexpressible humility, Jesus accepted the infinite abasement of the Cross. He bore
our grief and our sorrows. He was wounded for
our transgressions and made himself an offering
for our sins. His glorification which was accomplished by the Resurrection and the Ascension was
achieved through the Cross.
Thus, in the fleeting moments of exuberance
that marked Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem
on that first Palm Sunday, the world received Him
as King; the king who was on his way to death. His
passion however, was no morbid desire for martyrdom. Jesus’ purpose was to accomplish the mission
for which the Father sent Him.
On Palm Sunday this year, let us all make
Jesus our King and thus become children of the
King. If we do this, He will let nothing – not even
death – snatch us from His hands. He will
strengthen us and give us the power to be king of
ourselves and our passions. He will bestow upon us
the crown of righteousness. As He himself promised, He will grant us eternal life and will make us
heirs to the greatest Kingdom in the Universe.
The significance of receiving our palms on
Palm Sunday is to help us renew our commitment
to Christ; to salute Him as “Lord and King of our
lives.” As we receive our palms this year, it is my
fervent prayer that those palms will be a symbol of
our personal commitment to Christ as Lord of our
lives. May we all experience a most spiritually uplifting Holy Week as we journey together toward
the joyous celebration of Pascha. I wish you all

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Pamela Karamas Katsiris, President
President’s Message
March 2014
Folks have spent much of this winter huddled in their homes and out of the cold. They have also spent many
reluctant hours shoveling and wishing that they were inside, or better yet, in warmer climes. I have to admit,
and I will accept your disapproving head shakes, that I love the winter. It is a time that I get to reconnect with
my children and some friends that venture up north to ski with us. We unplug from the world in a big way, as
we have no computer, television, radio, phone and sparse cell phone service in the house we stay. We are
“forced” to actually talk to each other. We play board games and watch videos that we all have to agree on.
We have big hearty breakfasts and rowdy family meals, many of which are cooked either in the crock pot or
over the fireplace in our kitchen.
On the mountain we fall, laugh, get up and do it again. We have a rule, if someone has a bad spill, you must
first ask if they are ok, then you can point and laugh! We get a chance to snuggle close on the chair lifts and
race each other down the mountain. We breathe the fresh, albeit, cold winter air and feel the winter sun (and
wind) on our faces. We exercise, without realizing that is what we are doing, until we sit in the evening by
the fire and recognize how sore we are. We nurse injuries and tell the stories of our day and what a “great run
through the woods” was had.
I am sad when these winter days end. When the children go off to their own weekend sports and activities
schedules in the spring. I dread the day, coming soon, when they are in college and will no longer take the
weekend trips with us up to the mountains. The one shining spot is that we return to church every Sunday.
Even though we have been away for many of the Sundays in the winter, we always feel welcome, as if we
were never gone. We now get a chance to reconnect with our St. Vasilios family and friends. We get to share
the warmth of that companionship and common love for our Church and faith. We get to snuggle in too
crowded pews as Great Lent starts to fill the church and get to feel the warmth of the spirit of Pascha on our
faces and in our hearts.
I know many of you may not understand or know the excitement of skiing, but you can still feel many of our
experiences here at St. Vasilios. Unplug, reconnect and remember to first ask if someone is ok, before you
laugh together!
I wish you all a spirit filled Lent and a blessed Pascha.

Lastly, our hope is to create a complex that is accessible to all of our members regardless of age, disability or
need. Incorporating existing buildings with new structures.
We need the input of the community to bring ideas, and to get information on present conditions and considerations. We ask that all ministries and organizations send a representative to this Town Hall Meeting to voice

ORTHODOX LIFE - March/April 2014
Professional Development for Greek School Teachers
The first of a series of Professional development for the Greek School teachers of St. Vasilios Church,
Peabody, MA, took place recently in the Rev. Andrew J. Demotses Educational Center. The conference was
very well attended by the Greek School teachers, their principal, Dina
Kalaidzidis, members of the church council, parishioners and parents
interested in supporting the Greek School as it strives to enhance Greek
Orthodox identity through early Greek language learning and cultural
awareness in a global society.
Dr. Therese Caccavale who conducted the workshop, is nationally recognized for her success in developing second language acquisition
and speaking proficiency through early language learning. A child learns
Greek by speaking Greek where the class is totally conducted in the language.
Dr. Caccavale’s topic of discussion focused on Pathways to Proficiency: Second Language Teaching and Learning, Pre-Kindergarten
through Grade 6. She states that the review of current research related to
second language acquisition in children, has found that learning a second
language also helps to develop a child’s skills in English particularly in
the area of vocabulary. Knowledge in Greek is crucial in better understanding mathematics, science and other disciplines.
A child who speaks only English and learns Greek beginning in
early childhood when vocabulary development takes place, can more easily make connections with English
words derived from Greek language roots. Languages learners in Greek School from Kindergarten through
Grade 6 are in a continuous process of cognitive development that should have a positive effect on their ability
to become fluent in the Greek language if taught step by step and totally immersed in the language and culture.
Many examples were presented to substantiate Dr. Caccavale’s research and successful experience
with students learning to understand, speak, read and write in a foreign language. The presentation was followed by an enthusiastic and enlightening discussion. The workshop was planned by the Education committee
of the Parish Council headed by Dr. Phyllis Dragonas and Mrs. Tina Manolakos.
ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE
We strengthen our commitment to having all of our facilities and sanctuary accessible to all persons, whether
limited by disability, age, illness or injury. To do so we are forming a committee with the purpose of evaluating our current conditions, creating a “wish list” and summary of required changes, additions and modifications and beginning the fundraising process of making these wishes a reality.
www.stvasilios.org
The Parish Council invites representatives of all the organizations and ministries of the community, as well as,
interested individuals to join us on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 7 pm in the Parlor Room. We ask that you
bring your ideas and insight, and if you are able to attend, please email Pam Katsiris at

Greek School news
continues to provide speakers to enlighten the faithful.
These past few months have been our busiest between learning poems, songs, dances and balancing our daily
lessons and conversational time!
Our annual Independence Day Program was held on March 23rd in the Andrew J. Demotses Educational Center. It was yet another very successful performance by our students! Students from all classes recited poems,
sang songs and danced. Our guest speaker was our very own 3rd & 4th grade teacher,
Kyria Mirsini Vaggelakis Tsetsakos.
On Monday, March 24th we held our annual flag raising at the Peabody City Hall. Speros Venios emceed the
event and Mayor Ted Bettencourt presented a proclamation to President Pamela Katsiris. All students attended and grades 3-6 presented a brief program.
A special thanks to Kyriakos Andrinopoulos and Ted Kougianos of New Brothers Deli for their generous food
donation and Joanne Venios for the delicious galaktoboureko.
Students from all grades did an outstanding job performing for the Men’s Club at their annual Greek Independence Day dinner at Angelica’s on March 26th.
