Before the
Kellogg’s
plant, before the big box
stores there was the
little green house on F
street, where they sold
grass seed and fertilizer in the garage.
People came for miles
to talk to Joe and Ada
and learn the Loveland
secret. How did Loveland Lawns grow grass
so lush and green?
A s
part of
their
natural
growth cycle, grass plants
form seed heads and reseed themselves every year
in the fall. This regeneration
cycle has developed over
millions of years and is true
on the plains of Kansas and
wherever grass grows. In
nature, grass plants will routinely produce 500 to 1,000
lbs of seed per acre.
On home lawns and cultured turf, grass plants cannot reseed themselves because regular mowing eliminates the natural seed head.

Overseeding helps eliminate bare spots and thicken
the existing turf. Grass seed
sown in the fall is able to
grow and mature without
competition from aggressive
summer weeds. Next Spring,
if there are no bare spots,
there will be no weeds. Fall
overseeding is an essential
part of maintaining a healthy
turf.
Introduce genetic diversity into the turf grass stand.
Turf grass genetics continues to develop superior new
grass varieties. Disease
and drought tolerance as
well as color are all being
improved every year. Homeowners should decide what
they want in a lawn and then
choose the grass varieties
that can do the job. At the

When choosing a grass
seed mix, read the label
carefully. Avoid mixes that
contain course bladed varieties such as K-31 pasture
fescue types. In our area,
K-31 is a special problem.
By itself it is a coarse bladed
grass best suited for ditches
and landfills.
