Dear ALATEC Guests,
We are delighted t o have you join us for the fifth annual Alabama
Assistive Technology E x p o and Conference. Our goal is to create a venue
for consumers and professionals to come together and learn about the many
assistive technology devices available for individuals living with disabilities.
ALATEC provides an opportunity to educate people and professionals
about assistive technology. Participants have an opportunity to see
assistive technology i n use and take away information r e g a r d i n g the many
resources available. This year, we will again offer a tour of Auburn
University’s Center for Disability Research and Service. The multifaceted
n a t u r e of the Center helps individuals, with t h e m o s t significant
disabilities, live independently and achieve their career and educational goals.
Please let us know if we can do anything to make your visit to our
campus more comfortable. There are many volunteers and conference
coordinators available to assist with a variety of needs. You can easily identify
them by their orange ALATEC shirts.

How to Use Switches for Access – Adapt Toys, Build Battery Interrupt & a Switch - Laura Parks
& Beth Warren - Presenters Jeff Mega – Michael Papp – Floating to assist participants
Assistive technology can only meet an individual’s needs if it can be accessed. Access methods include
direct, switch, voice, eye gaze, joystick and mouse. If switch access is found to be the best method for
an individual, then further assessment is required to determine the optimal switch type and location.
This presentation will systematically go through a switch location hierarchy and present a variety of
available switch types. You will also learn how to make a switch and build a battery interrupt to modify
battery operated devices to operate with a switch. Come have fun and learn about switches.

Give Me the Tools - William Bowman
The “Give Me the Tools” program is an assistive technology demonstration program to teach people
about low-vision assistive technology and how it can improve the quality of life by using it. Statistics will be
shown on how much more improved the quality of life is for someone who is visually impaired by using
assistive technology.

members, and caregivers.
Operating System Battle Royale – Fight for Accessibility Supremacy - Jeff Mega
IOS, Android, and Windows! Oh my! It is a tough world out there and picking the right tablet can be a
real battle. Let us be your guide as we talk about and demonstrate some of the various accessibility
features available in the different devices. We’ll help take some of the guesswork out of making that
important selection.

members, and caregivers.
Switches, Ergonomics, and Work Station Design - Bynum Duren
Children and adults with functional limitations encounter product problems that prevent independent
function in the home, community, school, and work environment. Assistive Technology, (products), can
make the difference between independent or dependent functioning in the home, community, school, and
work environment. At the end of the session, participants will be able to improve their awareness of
Rehabilitation Technology Services and how AT solutions can improve independent functioning for people
with multiple functional limitations.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS
Home Modifications - No Contractor Required - Scott Renner
This presentation will discuss home accommodations and modifications solutions that do not
involve structural changes to the home. The presentation will start with some basic home
modifications solutions and then talk about safety items used by individuals with disabilities or
caring family members. Finally, a list of products that are designed to provide access to the home
without any or very little structural modifications will be shared. This session will provide valuable
information and resources for this alternative to traditional home modification.

Using ZoomText Magnifier/Reader for Windows - Michael Papp
This presentation will focus on accommodating computer access for low vision users with
ZoomText Magnifier/Reader. We will cover the basics of using ZoomText 10.1 for Windows
7 and ZoomText for Windows 8. Advanced features such as setting up freeze windows, how
to create different settings for use with programs such as Word and Internet Explorer, using
the application and doc readers, as well as a demonstration of the desktop camera viewer.

Educating High School Students Using Assistive Technology in the Classroom and in the
Community - Kim Moates
Participants of this session will gain an understanding of the assistive technology tools that can
be used to teach high school students with various disabilities. The assistive technology tools
include communication devices, iPad apps, low technology solutions, and tools for life skills.
Participants of this session will also gain an understanding of teaching high school students
using assistive technology tools that match their cognitive and functioning levels. This session
will not only focus on assistive technology in the classroom but assistive technology tools that
will be useful to high school students with disabilities in the community setting.

An Evolution of Assistive Technology for Deaf and Hard of Hearing – Daniel Lute
This presentation will address how assistive technology has evolved over the years for deaf
and hard of hearing individuals. Current technology demonstrations will be provided with a
focus on accommodations in the workplace, emergency preparedness, and independent living.

2 Cool 4 School - Great Apps for Students in High School and College! - Ashley McLeroy
Not only are tablets portable for students they're also more motivating to use than old school
methods. Why not take full advantage of the apps that are available further to assist those with
disabilities? This session will cover several apps that assist high school and college students in areas
such as note taking, planning, studying, and writing. The apps presented in this session have been
known to promote success and independence among students with disabilities. Attendees of this
session will learn recommended apps for the above areas and the features that make them so useful.

members, and caregivers.
ChromeVox – Adding Accessibility to Google Chrome – Tim Emmons
Not everyone can afford an Apple computer and adding additional software to make a Windows PC
speak can be cost-prohibitive. Google Chrome has added out of the box accessibility for individuals
that are visually-impaired. ChromeVox has created another method of accessing items like
Bookshare and BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download). You will learn about this browser tool
and how it can open the world for individuals who need a little assistance.

The Blind Rehabilitation Team: Orientation & Mobility Specialists & Vision Rehabilitation
Therapists - Brianna Jeffrey
The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the services, training, assistive
technology, and information and referral resources that Orientation & Mobility Specialists and Vision
Rehabilitation Therapists can provide blind and visually impaired consumers to assist them in their
vocational and independent living goals. At the end of this session participants will be able to identify
the members of the working alliance team, have a working knowledge of the types of consumers
served, and the assistive technology options available to aid blind and visually impaired consumers.

Assistive Technology to Support Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in Employment Scott Renner & Michael Papp
This presentation will cover AT to support individuals with intellectual disabilities in the employment
settings. One focus of the presentation will be on using different Apps for supports. The
presentation will also focus on real life scenarios and how to adapt AT to get the job done.
Sometimes adapting AT is necessary to accommodate a specific opportunity. Come learn how to
adapt the right tool for the right job.

Texthelp Read & Write Gold: An in-depth tutorial – Beth Warren
Don't let language-based learning disabilities hinder your academic or professional progress.
This comprehensive program provides individuals who struggle with reading and writing the
tools they need to succeed in an academic or professional setting. In this session, we will
cover the support tools that Read & Write Gold offers and get a hands-on look at the
program in use. Upon completion of the session, the participant will have a greater insight to
this particular assistive technology solution for individuals with language-based learning
disabilities who are pursuing their dreams.

members, and caregivers.
Wheelchairs: More to Them than Meets the Eye! - Cathy Carver
We will discuss, “the most frequently asked questions about wheelchairs." Just as all people
with disabilities differ in their presentation and functional abilities, wheelchairs vary as well.
Wheelchairs can be manual or power and everything in between. Components vary even
more, and the whole process of selection can be overwhelming. This presentation will answer:
How do I know when I, one of my clients, or someone I care about need a wheelchair? Does
insurance cover it? How do I decide on which one or type? Who supplies and repairs them?
What’s the process of getting one? In the wheelchair industry, fraud and abuse have been
rampant. To prevent that, come ready to get clarity and to participate in this interactive
discussion.

AT on a Stick – Laura Parks
Students with IEPs or 504 plans benefit from using assistive technology (AT) to increase
independence and maximize opportunities. Participant will explore numerous free tools and
ways to support students of all abilities. Free tools include text-to-speech, voice recognition,
graphic organizers, typing program, visual supports, and on-screen keyboard. This collection of
software programs can run from a USB flash drive plugged into a Windows computer.
Therefore, it offers a portable, personal solution with you wherever you go.

members, and caregivers.
Introduction to Assistive Technologies for the Blind – Joel Stephens
This presentation will focus on displaying and explaining the basic devices used as
accommodations for the blind and visually impaired in education, work, and personal settings.
Topics will include computer usage with speech and magnification, CCTVs (desktop & handheld), Braille note takers, low-cost technology alternatives, etc.

Assistive Technology for FUN! – Jared Rehm
Looking for some fun ways for a person with a disability to be active? Look no further! In this
session, the presenter will discuss adaptive equipment and accessibility issues involved with
recreation and athletics. Learn how to bypass barriers and get in the game. Everyone can
benefit from some physical activity, and with a little creativity, everyone can have fun being
active and healthy. Target Audience: Rehabilitation professionals, educators, therapist, Individuals with disabilities, family
members, and caregivers.

Workshop in a Bag: Assistive Technology that is Good, Fast, and Cheap! Michael Papp – Presenter
Jeff Mega – Ashley McLeroy - Floating to assist participants
It is possible to construct some assistive technology solutions for less than $5. Skilled Rehab Engineers,
OTs, and PTs frequently build practical devices using recycled materials, plastics, tapes, and fasteners
easily found at your local hardware store. With a bag of basic tools and some materials, it is often
possible to make simple switches and mounts, custom knobs and hand grips, and a wide array of
position devices. During the workshop, several quick and simple devices will be made, and participants
will have the opportunity to make and take a simple piece of assistive technology.

Apple accommodates a variety of disabilities with their built in accessibility features. Their
features include switch access, text to speech, guided access, and more. Attendees of this
session will learn what features are available, how to setup those features, and examples on
how to utilize them.

Lost at Sea Just My Android and Me - Jeff Mega
Okay, so you bought an Android tablet. Now what do you do? Whether you bought it
because it was cheaper or maybe you didn’t realize, that’s what was on a Kindle or perhaps
you thought “a tablet is a tablet.” It doesn’t matter. You have an Android-based tablet. Now
let’s make it WORK! What accessibility features does it have? What apps will make it more
helpful to your daily activities? Let me help you set a course and steer into making this useful
device into a fantastic tool.

Does this fit me? Ergonomics of a Work Environment- Beth Warren
Participant will gain knowledge in the field of ergonomics. Learn the factors considered in an
ergonomic evaluation. Participants will determine low tech and high tech solutions to make an
ergonomic environment. The Presenter will provide self-help tools to perform your own
ergonomics of work environment.
