Samprati organizes mulakat programme with Kemu Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 23: Samprati today organized a programme of mulakat with the doyen of Kashmiri Theatre Padmashri Moti Lal Kemu at K L sehgal Hall Jammu. In the presidium accompaniying Mr Kemu were Makhan Lal Saraf, dr. P N Trisal, Dr. R L Bhat, Prof. H L Misri and Prof Om Chrangoo. Todays proceedings were conducted by Dr. Roshan Saraf. Comprihensive papers were presented on life of M L Kemu by Pradeep Koul Khudbali, Dr. P N Trisal, Prof. H L Misri and Dr. R L Bhat, Mr Kemu's contribution in the filed of theatre and dance was discussed at length by them. Later M L Kemu recollected his memories of his association with theatre in his childhood days and decades thereafter. A few of his classic works were translated into different languages prominent amongst those were Nagar udhasi by Shashi Shekhar Toshkhani into hindi, Mrs.Pratiba Aggarwal into bengla and rajisthani and played in Calcutta, New Delhi Jaipur and elsewhere in foreign countries. Dr.R L Shant described M L kemu as a dramatist with historical touch to his plays.This comphrensive programme was followed by question hour in which many a people including, Roshan Saraf, Pradeep Khudbali, Kundan Paaras, Maharaj K Maharaj, P N Shad ,Vir ji Sumbly and Ratinder koul interacted with him. Ex-IAS officer Deepak Gupta named UPSC chief NEW DELHI, Nov 23: The Government has appointed former IAS officer Deepak Gupta as new chairman of UPSC, breaking away from the tradition of appointing the chief from the serving members of the Commission. Gupta, a retired IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, had yesterday taken over as the chief of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), official sources said. He is younger brother of former Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta. As per convention, a UPSC chief is appointed from among the members of the Commission. (PTI) BKNSS flays Govt for denying package to DPs Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 23: Bhai Kanahiya Nishkam Sewa Society (BKNSS) has condemned the Union Home Ministry for not accepting the grant of Rs 9096 crore package to the refugees. In a meeting of the organization held along with some other Sikh bodies under the leadership of S Mohinder Singh, the members expressed strong resentment against the BJP led Central Government for denying package to the PoJK and other refugees. They said that State Government recommended the package after lot of pressure from the DPs after long time but unfortunately, the same has been returned by the Home Ministry with a rider. Contact: 9419157374 JAMMU, Nov 23: Two activists of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were detained by the police on the allegations by the Congress workers and people that they were allegedly paying money to buy votes for their candidate in Bhallesa area of Bhaderwah Assembly constituency in district Doda. However, the allegations were not substantiated by police and Magistrate, who rushed to the spot after getting the complaint. As per police sources, two persons were gheroed by Congress party activists in Bhallesa area of Bhaderwah assembly constituency in district Doda on the charges that they were distributing cash among the electorates. Congress party activists alleged that the two workers belonged to PDP and were distributing money to lure voters. On getting information, police team and a Magistrate rushed to the spot and during search, police recovered Rs 23,000 from a house and a Scorpio car. The house and the vehicle were seized and both PDP activists were detained. However, the recovered cash was within permissible limits of the ECI, which was Rs 50,000. Meanwhile, reports said that Congress workers started protests in the area against the incident. SAARC Standing Committee discusses terrorism, energy, poverty KATHMANDU, Nov 23: Top diplomats of the eightmember SAARC grouping today discussed cooperation on a range of issues like combating terrorism, poverty alleviation, energy security and climate change. Foreign Secretary Sujata Singh and other top diplomats met at the 41st meeting of SAARC Standing Committee ahead of the 18th SAARC Summit scheduled from November 25 to 27. Representatives from the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, along with observers from nine other countries will take part in the summit. Foreign secretaries from all SAARC member states are attending the meeting. The Standing Committee Meeting was opened by Ali Naseer Mohamed, Chair of the Standing Committee and the Leader of the Delegation from the Maldives. The meeting elected Shanker Das Bairagi, Acting Foreign Secretary and the Leader of the Nepalese delegation, as the Chairman of the Committee. "As terrorism in all its forms and manifestations has remained a formidable chal- lenge for our region, coordinated and concerted efforts are required to tackle the situation," said Bairagi. "Though poverty alleviation has remained a major agenda of the SAARC for decades, a quarter of our people still lives in poverty and hunger despite our consistent efforts. Redoubling of our efforts is absolutely necessary to eradicate poverty and hunger from the regional landscape. "As this region is suffering from acute energy deficit, we can make tremendous progress through meaningful cooperation in this sector," said Bairagi.
