Representing 25 countries of the Americas, 80 talented musicians between 18 and 30 years of age will come together for the Caribbean Tour, led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto (Mexico), and Guest Conductors Rafael Payare (Venezuela) and Jean-Philippe Tremblay (Canada). In addition, the tour will feature a world-renowned composer-inresidence, Arturo Márquez (Mexico), recipient of his country’s highest honor for artists: the Gold Medal in Fine Arts. As part of its mission, YOA seeks to share knowledge and teach classical music in locations where resources for symphonic music are limited and classical concerts are rarely played. As such, to foster community involvement and encourage intercultural exchange, YOA musicians and faculty will give classes and training to local musicians in the Youth Philharmonic of the Dominican Republic, the National Music Camp of Haití, the Music Academy Occide Jeanty in Haiti, and the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica. During the 2014 tour, YOA will perform more than nine concerts in eight cities in the Caribbean, reaching more than 13,000 live audience members and over 180,000 people through broadcast television from July 5-26. YOA will perform with world-class international artists, including cellist Alisa Weilerstein (USA), violinists Robert McDuffie (USA), Alexandre Da Costa (Canada), and rising star Yolanda Bruno (Canada). The concerts will take place in important cultural centers of the Caribbean region: the Grand Theatre Cibao, the Plaza Eugenio María de Hostos, and the National Theatre of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Additionally, YOA will give concerts at the Youth Music Festival of Port-au-Prince in Haiti, in Jamaica’s Emancipation Park, and the Convention Center of Montego Bay, among other venues. YOA Orchestra of the Americas trains musicians on theoretical and technical levels, enriching personal development for its participants during the preparatory residence and following artistic tour. Each day during the Residency, musicians participate in master classes, private lessons, orchestra sectionals, and chamber music rehearsals led by YOA faculty, who are principal musicians in some of the most famous orchestras around the world. In addition to musical training, YOA members have access to yoga, dance, language, and leadership classes as well as lectures by the participating faculty. Upon completion of the Residency, YOA Orchestra of the Americas will begin an international tour, visiting the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica.
