Dear Parents,
On Monday we welcomed Bec who led a Healthy Schools assembly around the hidden extras in our drinks.
It was quite amazing to hear that in a standard 2 litre bottle of Cola you would find the equivalent of 52
lumps of sugar! And also quite astounding that when you drink a so called calcium rich and healthy bottle of
YOP, you actually consume 16 spoons of sugar. Thank goodness, we are already well on the way with our
water bottles! They are available to all children from Year 1 to Year 6 and can be refilled during the day.
Our Healthy Schools status will be reviewed this autumn so we are working hard to make sure we continue
to qualify for this worthwhile accreditation. In a few weeks, Bec will return for some tasting sessions. Infants
and Foundation children continue to receive a free healthy snack every morning so they do not need to
bring anything. The Juniors are invited to bring their own healthy snack from home.
Our Read Write Inc. programme is running smoothly with 12 ability groups up to and including year 5
children. As mentioned, some children will only be part of the programme briefly to cover elements they will
benefit from regarding spelling. All children in a Read Write Inc. group will be set spellings tailored to their
group going forward and these will be tested weekly.
As Achievement for All continues to have a high profile at Our Lady Immaculate, Mrs Madders organised a
Mind Mission Day on Thursday. The children took part in hands on maths, thinking and team building
‘expeditions’. They worked together very well and persevered to overcome any difficulties and find solutions
successfully. Thank you to all parents and families who came to the after school workshop and rose to the
challenges set. Thank you to our Friends Association for funding this event which, like Circus Sensible last
year, brought us all together as a school community at the beginning of a new academic year.
I am delighted to inform you that Br Stephen is going to take on the role of Chaplain at Our Lady
Immaculate. I am sure we will benefit tremendously from his knowledge, wisdom and many talents. You will
find a special message from Br Stephen in this newsletter.

A message from our Chaplain
It is my great pleasure to take up the post of chaplain to Our Lady Immaculate primary school this term. I have always
enjoyed working in schools (had I not entered the Norbertine Order after University, I would have become a French
teacher!), and I look forward to working with you all, parents, pupils and staff. I very much hope to be a spiritual
support to you all, as we educate our children and bring them up to love God and each other. My own primary school
was named after St Albert the Great - perhaps the greatest medieval scientist-priest, the man who was St Thomas
Aquinas' favourite teacher - and he had a wonderful phrase which has stayed with me since my own schoolboy days:
"The more I learn about the world in which I live, the closer I grow to God." Our Creator has designed us to live and
learn in order to know him and ourselves as best as we can; why? Because he wants us "to know, love and serve him
in this life, and be happy with him forever in the next," as the Catechism taught us. My hope and prayer for the family
of O.L.I. school is that we will all live and learn together, under the maternal care of Our Lady, so that we might grow
closer to God each day, and find our happiness in him - a happiness that will sustain us through life, until we reach the
eternal happiness of heaven! That amazing journey begins in our Catholic schools - and I am excited to be joining you
on that journey! I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the coming weeks. With every good wish and
blessing, Br Stephen Morrison o.praem.

Our Lady Immaculate School Prayer
This is our school.
May we live, love and learn together
knowing Jesus Christ.
May peace dwell here.
Let love be here with us:
Love of God
Love of one another
Love of our world
and love of learning
Let us remember to walk with Jesus the Light of the World.
Amen

PARENT EMAIL ADDRESS:
[email protected] Please use the parent email address to
leave messages about a child’s absence or pick up arrangements until 9:30am on the day. As a school we need to
track children’s absences as early as possible so this email address will be checked daily at 9:30am only. (Please do
not send absence notes and pick up arrangements via the admin@ email address – thank you).
If you change your email address and/or mobile number, please remember it is your responsibility to amend
your individual Parentmail account. We would also like to be made aware of these changes for our own
records but cannot access the Parentmail details.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
th
th
The book fair will be open after school next Thursday, Friday and also on Monday (29 ) and Tuesday (30 ) from 3.15
– 3.45 p.m. All children will have the opportunity to visit the book fair with their teachers during the school day on
Thursday. Should your child wish to purchase a book at this time, kindly ensure the money is sent to school on
Thursday in a sealed envelope, clearly marked with your child’s name together with the completed order form.
Leaflets, which illustrate some of the books for sale, have been distributed today with the newsletter. Please support
the book fair as each class will benefit if it is a success by way of commission earned.
VISITS TO CHELMSFORD LIBRARY
We have arranged visits to Chelmsford Library on the following days. If you are able to help accompany your child’s
class, please inform the teacher. We will depart at 1.15 p.m. and return by 3.15 p.m.

MACMILLAN – WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING
th
Mrs Comerford has very kindly organised this again and it will be taking place in the Parish Hall on Friday, 26
September from 8.30 – 12 noon. Every class will be taken along to purchase a cake. They will also have the
opportunity to purchase a milkshake during breaktime, made by some of our Year 6 pupils! Therefore, we
recommend that each child brings no more than £1 to school on this day. Please support this very worthwhile cause,
thank you.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
A reminder that summer uniform may be worn until the half-term holiday at the end of October – weather permitting!
However, boys must not mix and match summer and winter uniforms, i.e. the polo shirts can only be worn with shorts,
not with long trousers. If your child wishes to wear long trousers, then these must be worn with a shirt and tie.
Parent Forum Meetings
Parent Forum Meetings will be
held in the first week of every
month at either 2:30pm or

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS – AUTUMN TERM 2014
At the beginning of each school term, we request that parents contribute a minimum contribution of £10 from each
family (not per child) towards school funds. In order to maintain the same level of provision in many curriculum areas,
for both Infants and Juniors, and to upkeep the buildings, the school does need your financial support. For those
parents who would still prefer to send their contribution on a termly basis direct to the school rather than by standing
order, please use the coupon at the foot of the Newsletter (cash or cheque made payable to Our Lady Immaculate
School).
The preferred method of payment is by Standing Order. If any parent requires a Standing Order form or a Gift Aid
form please contact the school office. Please use the Gift Aid form it either, or both, of the parents are tax payers.
Thank you.
