Belgio e Olanda ai Giardini della Biennale DACC Interna+onal Winter Workshop “a week with SATOSHI OAKADA” 16-‐20 febbraio aula G SMALLNESS. 93 New exhibi=on space for the Biennale of Venice The main topic of the workshop between IUAV and CUJ (Chiba University Japan), due to be in Venezia in February 2015, is to propose a public small space / building -‐ the footprint is less than 85 m2 and the plot area is approx. 200 m2 -‐ between the Belgian Pavilion and The Dutch Pavilion in the Venice Giardini della Biennale. For making an architectural space, 9M3 exercise will be helpful (cf. addi+onal papers in the web page above men+oned). Nowadays the area is occupied by public toilets that should be kept as minimal func+on, consciously re-‐designed under the no+on of “Universal Design” for any person who visits the Biennale. Addi+onal func+ons such as gallery, shop, café, storage, or whatever is needed should also be proposed, for upper floors, in order to ac+vate the surroundings, under your surveys and researches, into a persuasive opinion. The spa+al organiza+on should be carefully considered by thinking deeply both to spa+al con+nuity from one to another (ver+cally / horizontally), and to spa+al quality interrelated with light (sunlight / natural light), and to whatever is related to making architectural spaces. The building exterior should be considered from the standpoint of its historical context -‐ the Belgian was designed by L. Sneyers in 1907 and totally restored by V. Vallot in 1948; the Dutch one is a masterpiece by G. T. Ritveld , 1954 -‐ as well as the exis+ng context. However, it does not necessarily mean that the proposal must go towards a conserva+ve process. It should, in fact, reflect a kind of contemporariness: what we are, today, which is also a kind of specula+on on how we see and interact with history.
