Dear Friends
I'm a native Texan
and proud of it!
March 2nd is
Texas Independence Day. We
declared our independence from
Mexico. April
21st is San Jacinto Day...when we
actually won our freedom from
Mexico in 1836.
From 1836 to 1845 Texas was a
sovereign nation, known as "The
Republic of Texas". We did join
the United States of America in
1845. Was Texas ever a part of
another nation after
1845? Yes...in 1861 it seceded
from the United States to become a
state in "The Confederate States of
America", and fought on their side
in the "Civil War" [sometimes
called the War Between the
States]. When the war ended,
with a victory for the Union, Texas
again joined the United States. For
more information about Texas history, visit our library! And stay
tuned for more exciting news from
the "friends"....we have a literary
event coming up! -Patsy Hoffman,
President of the Friends of the Elgin
Library
