Chairman’s Chat
By John Griffith
Phew! It’s about 27°C out there as I write this. It never ceases to amaze me
just how quickly the weather in Canada can change from dreary winter to
glorious summer.
Well, the show season has already started, with the annual British Car Flea Market at Ancaster Fairgrounds in April. The
weather was perfect, and even the fact that it was held on Easter Sunday did not appear to cut down on attendance. The
Club table was manned by various members of the Executive and the membership. Thanks to all involved.
The Annual General Meeting was held at Ned Devine’s Restaurant in Milton at the beginning of April. Several changes were
made to the Executive, including the addition of Roddy Sergiades and David Wood, as Assistant Chair and Webmaster,
respectively. In addition, Roger Tipple accepted the position of Membership Secretary, replacing Don Walker. Roger noted
that the Club membership is now around 350, down from a high of 565 a few years ago. All members are urged to “Spread
the Word” about the club in an effort to boost our numbers. We accepted the resignation of Bill Davies as Co-ordinator for
the South/Central Chapter. Thanks for your service, Bill!
The Club Executive has also held a couple of meetings since our last issue, with various items up for discussion. The
donation of $500 from Frances Spracklin, in memory of her late husband Gord, is to be used to promote the visibility of the
Club, in an effort to attract more members. Roddy Sergiades agreed to take the lead in these efforts, which will include the
purchase of a new Club banner.
The Oily Rag has been discussed in depth by the Executive. Obviously,
the fact that we only managed to get 3 issues out last year was of great
concern and will not be repeated. We also discussed the question of
cost. We do not want to compromise on the present high quality of the
Oily Rag, but unfortunately we are barely covering our costs. It now
costs us almost as much to mail the Oily Rag as it does to print it. With
this in mind, we have included a ‘questionnaire’ in this issue, to get
some feedback from our members. Basically, we want to know your
views on paid advertising as opposed to raising the cost of the ‘snail
mail’ copy. We look forward to reading your comments.
One other item up for discussion was the Club calendar. We will endeavour to have the 2015 calendar available for sale at
British Car Day at Bronté Park in September. With this goal in mind we need to get more photographs of members’ cars. If
you would like your car to be included in next year’s calendar, please send us a photo as soon as possible. Try to include
yourself in the photo, that way it will help us to put faces to names. I’ve sent mine in!
Yes, on a personal note, my position of Club Chairman has at last been legitimized somewhat by my purchase of Mike
Fox’s beautiful 1958 Austin A95 Westminster. I hope to be able to show off my “Green Goddess” at various rallies and tours
this summer. Keep ‘em rolling!
John Griffith
All Members Please Read!
Please give the following your consideration as the Executive would like your input. While your input is valued
and welcomed please note that the final determination will rest with the Executive that has been duly elected to
make such decisions.
Your Club, as is the case with many clubs these days, is facing an increase in costs particularly those associated with mailing out copies of the Oily Rag. Other more general costs associated with attending shows, insurance, and running costs are also increasing. At the same time revenues have been decreasing as our membership ages or moves on to other interests.
This cost/revenue squeeze has to be addressed. While we have already reduced the number of newsletters to
reduce costs and are looking at other measures we now we must do something on the revenue side.
The options are:
1. To allow paid advertising in the newsletter from both members and non members who offer classic car products and services. This would range from a business card to a full page. Great care would be taken to ensure
that any advertising would not dominate the newsletter. Members would be give a priority as to available space.
2. Increase the membership fee for posted copies only by $5 per year, ie $30 per year for a copy via the mail
and $20 for a PDF version.
We do not currently feel it is necessary to offer a third option combining 1 & 2.
Please give the two options some thought and let us know your feelings as below.

Ancaster Flea Market
By John Griffith
This year’s edition of the British Car Flea Market at the Ancaster Fairgrounds was held on Easter Sunday in April. The
weather was perfect. The cars sparkled. The faces were familiar, and especially welcome after such a long, hard winter.
The questions were familiar; “How are you?” and “Have you
tried starting your car yet?” Judging by the parking lot, most
of the LBCs started at the first attempt…………………
As usual, your Club had a table set up inside to welcome
members and visitors. Here is Roger and Tony with John
Some people came to admire the cars, while other, such as
George Allen of Flesherton, came specifically to buy a car.
George wanted everyone to know…...
Peter Gilbert towed his beautiful little 1959 Austin A35 from
Pickering, looking for a buyer. Chris Young of Puslinch
showed off his beautiful 1954 Daimler Conquest………..
Fans of BBC Television might have expected
to see Inspector Morse climb out of this
Mark II Jaguar…………….
Len Beaten’s 1953 Mark I Alpine drew many admiring glances. And of course, knowing British cars as he does, Doug
Black of Newmarket wanted to be home before it got dark.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable day. See you all at the 2015
event!
Member’s Rides
By Grahame Carter
Grahame Carter a Brit now living in
South Carolina recently sent pictures
and the history of his 1962 Vauxhall
Velox. If you want to see pictures of this
car buy a copy of the 2015 calendar.
Grahame writes, I’ve owned this car
since 1982. It belonged to a guy in our
village Inkpen Berkshire. He shipped it
to Pakistan when he worked in the oil
industry. By shipping it direct when new
he avoided the British purchase tax.
It reappeared in the late 60’s parked
each day at our local station, Kintbury,
from whence the same owner commuted to London. It later disappeared again
then turned up as an add in our local rag
the Newbury Weekly News. I had become interested in these cars since my father had one from 60 to 64 and I had
done some of my learning to drive in it.
When I went to see and buy the car it was stripped to the shell with no running gear apart from the original front axle
and a Daimler? rear axle, apparently the guy had planned to install a Daimler V8, lovely engine by Edward Turner of
Triumph twin fame, and then drag race it.
I rebuilt the car with the aid of a very rusty 72 Vauxhall Viscount, the running gear being practically indentical. This
served for a while, but when I emigarated to the States spares were non existent and it soon came off the road.
Fast forward to 2000. Nearing retirement I decided on a resurrection to include more power, better brakes, and
creature comforts etc. Out of the blue by a peculiar circumstance an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham turned
up with all power everything and a 307/5 litre V8. Without getting into a long story the Velox body morphed onto the
Olds frame and floor pan thus retaining all the Olds running gear and all the wonderful ‘to me’ Vauxhall looks. Obviously, there is a fortune in re chroming for which I highly recomment Paul’s chrome plating in Pennsylvania, its far
better than new.
Needless to say the car drives very well and is a very comfy ride

1958 Minor 1000: 2 dr. 948 cc engine, Dove Grey, original red leather upholstery, spare set of tires and rims,
shop manual. Selling after 35 years of tender care and careful storage. Not driven in winter. This is one of the
better Minors you are likely to see. Placed in high '80's and low '90's in ACCCC Concours events several years ago
and still in immaculate condition. Excellent colour images available upon request - email [email protected] or
call 905-451-6473 and judge for yourself. Appraised $11,900 Asking $7500 firm, certified.

1961 Minor 1000: 4 door, RHD, brought from the UK to the US in 2010. It was my daily drive for 2 years in
Gaithersburg, MD and is still in driving condition. Clean title and antique vehicle reg. in PA and is road worthy. It
has been kept in the garage but does have some rust as expected. Mechanically it is sound but the body and
floors need some work. The original trafficators are still installed in the car but not working. Dove grey/red
interior in good condition. 948cc engine (replacement “Gold Seal” engine). Lot of work done in 2008 before
import. Odo stuck at 83,999. Orig toolkit. Also 16ft dual axle car hauler which I also 'restored'. $8,000 USD for
the car or $11,000 USD with trailer. Moving to New Zealand. Tex [email protected] Philadelphia, PA.

good narrative of the ownership trail (likely still registered to a former owner in Victoria and has changed hands
twice in past several years with neither owner registering the vehicle). Will sell as is, and provide history as known
to us, and buyer can research and obtain new registration. $500. 250-954-7641 Parksville, BC.

A Short Devon History
By Ken McGuire
Anyone who regularly reads Julian Howard’s North American Orphan Austin Cars Society daily
listings of Austins and other British orphans for sale may have seen my newly purchased 1950
A40 Devon which was listed there a month or so ago. Where most of the cars he shows us are
as far away as Australia or as close as California, there is hardly anything close enough to my
home for me to be able to go see it. This one looked beautiful, was fairly priced and only
several hours away, so I called the seller and made an appointment to meet him and see the
car, the very next day.
He was a really nice guy, and owns several vintage US made cars – all of which have had big
engines installed. He was only the third owner of the Devon, and originally bought it with the
idea in mind to make it into a big engine gasser. To his credit, when he began to realize what a
beautiful, original, car it was and saw the documentation that came with it, he knew that it
shouldn’t be touched, so when a vintage Corvette came his way, he needed the space in his
garage and the Austin had to go.
With the exception of the red wheels, the paint is original, with dealer stickers still on each side
– just behind Austin of England. There is a set of vintage seat covers on the original upholstery,
and only 44,000 miles on the clock. Not only was the original tool kit under the bonnet, but the
jack handle, tire pump and crank were in the boot with the jack and the spare.
Along with the car and several boxes of parts, was a 50 year collection of California registration
certificates, a photo of the original owner with his car on the day he took delivery and another of
him celebrating it’s 50th. birthday. I have the original owner manual, the Austin warranty, and
three scrapbooks filled with Austin ads, brochures and magazines.
It’s a transitional Devon. Built late in 1949, it was titled as a 1950 by the selling dealer in
California. It has stone guards on the rear fenders, but does not have the vent windows on the
front doors. It has a sun roof. All that seems to have been added were turn signals that work in
conjunction with the trafficators. On top of all of that, it starts, runs and drives every bit as good
as the A40 I learned to drive in, way back in 1956. With the exception of the passenger side
trafficator and flasher, which I had to replace, there’s nothing for me to do to it except drive it.
I’m looking forward to a fun summer doing just that.
Motoring Memories
By George Allen
Many, many years ago I started to get my hands dirty!
My first job was with a Vauxhall dealer. It was at a time when new cars were very few and far apart, and one
had to get on a waiting list. Old cars were the norm. Wonderful makes like, Austin, Morris, Singer, Riley and
the list goes on. My very first car was a 1932 Morris Major convertible. A big ‘sit up and beg’ kind of car, We
drove it (my brother and I) for about 2 weeks before we suddenly found top gear. We decided to “bash” the
body off and made it into a shooting brake. Looking back I can’t believe we actually did it............not that it
lessened the value, who cared anyway, it was just an old banger!! But the fact that we had hardly any suitable tools to do the job. My dad helped when we wanted to give it a decoke, I am sure that he took about 2
hours on each and every valve. In those days you only removed the carbon from the very center of the piston.
This was to stop the possibility of it using oil. We greased both side of the gasket and put it back on, I can still
remember the luverly smell as it was started up again, no torque wrenches, just a few open ended “spanners.”
We drove it for a few years then sold it. Maybe for a few quid or so. I still look at some old motoring magazines
dated 1933, one actually shows some of the Morris “Sixes” the same as the one I owned, it shows that an Isis
Special Coupé is priced at 350 pounds. The Major Saloon was only 215 pounds. I relish the memories that are
stored in my head, and do so wish that England could be that same “nice” place I so fondly remember.
‘Til the next time.
George Allen.

The Web Report
By David Wood
Seems like the most of the articles posted to the web are for upcoming events. I don’t mind this at all; it is a
great place for them. I get these events from event organizers, and from club members. I try to keep them as
British as possible but many events, which aren’t British are still important. Also on the web we have an up to
date events calendar from Tony Fox, who updates regularly.
If you have an event the best time to get it to me would be two or three weeks before. The deadline is Friday
evening.
I’ll also take your pictures and stories! And show you some more.
Drop by, stay a while.
Cheers, DW
Eastender’s Report
By Alan Weller
A lot has happened over the time since the last opportunity to write for the Oily Rag.
I’ve had lots of thoughts about siting down to write this over the
last two months and even sat down at the keyboard weeks ago
to do this and got side tracked by either work issues or looking
for photos to put in the magazine or calendar. The unfortunate
reality of all this is that it is now 9:45 pm on the 31st of May,
which just happens to be the deadline for submissions. The faster I work the further I get behind these days. Is it the age we’re
in or my age? I prefer to think it’s the former not the latter. At any
rate, I will try to fill the page with something of interest.
First thing to report is that we had our spring garage tour in
April. The only garage on the tour was mine due to a lack of
members with a project underway. I put up my hand to host the
one and only garage to be opened up for viewing. There was
still snow and ice in my driveway and with a bit of help from a
sledge hammer in the driveway three days before, I was able
to get the 4 inches of ice out of the way to get a couple of cars
out so we could walk around. The attention of the small group
assembled was on Jennifer’s Morris truck and to some degree
my Sunbeam Alpine race car which is still waiting for the new
engine. The group enjoyed a nice lunch across the street at the
Victoria Inn after the tour. Donna and Don Cane always do their
best to make our visits pleasurable and the food was a treat.
We had almost a dozen in attendance.
The Morris truck was in the process of being massaged back to
life so Jen could drive it for her high school prom night May 23rd. The electrical gremlins were blocking us from
getting it started, thanks in part to our friend Lucas and the remnants of a 1930’s original wiring loom. We ran
out of time to do a complete rewiring before the prom night so it had to be transported down the main street of
Cobourg on my trailer with 4 graduates in the back of the truck. We will keep at it and hopefully it will sputter to
life later this summer as Jen really wants to drive it and I’m curious if it will run down the road after 20 years of
storage. Once Jen goes off to college this year we will have to see where the truck will fit in her schedule.
With the help of Deb and Dave Hughes we are working on
the tour from Canadian Tire Motorsport Park to Victoria Inn for
Saturday the 14th of June as part of the Varac race weekend.
We did this last year to help Bob Deshane get more participation from attendees of the race weekend and hope to build on
the success of last year with more entrants.
Ancaster Swap Meet was on Easter Sunday and I was there
with Dave Jackson and shared a space. I thought attendance
a bit low given the very good weather (for a change) and the
new venue. I suspect Easter and family commitments played
a role in people having to choose how they spent the day.
The next event that I hope to attend is Brits in the Park in
Lindsay in July. Grant Leonard is chasing down anyone with
Sunbeam ties to bring a car to help celebrate 50 years since
the Sunbeam Tiger was created. Not owning a Tiger is no
excuse so bring our your Alpine or other Rootes Group car. I
hope to bring the Alpine race car.
This spring weather has finally turned into summer-like weather so getting all the rolling stock out of the garage has been
the plan of action but it seems like electrical and brake issues
plague three of the cars. I have plate stickers and insurance in
place but have to do some fettling to coax them back to driving
condition. I’m thinking a week off work for vacation soon will
be necessary to spend the quality time needed in the garage.
Wish me luck with that!
I will attach a couple of pictures to go with the article and with
luck there will be room to put them in this issue.
Cheers,
Alan.
Marilyn Bell
In the summer of 1954 16 year old Marilyn Bell, and the local swimming community, was not pleased to find
the CNE was going to pay an American long-distance swimmer, Florence Chadwick $10,000 for crossing Lake
Ontario.
On September the 8th Marilyn Bell, started out
the 32-mile swim from Youngstown, New York.
Florence Chadwick had led, followed by Bell and,
finally, Torontonian Winnie Roach. Chadwick and
Roach, both failed to make the swim while
Marilyn completed the swim in 21 hours.
At the end of her swim of 70,000 strokes somewhere around 100,000 people were waiting for her on the
Toronto lakeshore just west of the Exhibition Grounds, now Marilyn Bell Park.
After a bit of shaming of the CNE Committee, she received the CNE’s $10,000 prize, accolades, and numerous
gifts including sides of beef, furs, TVs and cash donations from people all over Toronto, and a car.
A car. Yup, a pale blue Austin Somerset convertible from Austin Motors of Toronto.
Marilyn swam the Straits of Juan de Fuca and the English Channel in the next couple of years then retired,
marrying a swimmer/lifeguard she met while racing in a New Jersey race. The car’s future I do not know. If I
ever find out I’ll let you know. If you find out, please let me know!
MY FIRST CAR
One of my first cars was a 1959 Ford Consul. It was soooooooo terrible in the snow! I always had to have
some husky guys in the back for weight and also to push. It looked at snow and got stuck! Well one Friday
night I was giving one of the big guys a ride home. It was storming so bad you could hardly see. This fellow
lived down a gravel road that had not been plowed for a while so we gave the old girl all she had and got going a good speed. What we did not know was that the plow had stopped and the driver had given up and gone
back to the yard. Well that 6 foot bank he left in front of us swallowed that little car right to the back doors! We
got out and had to stay overnight at a house near by. The Consul was pulled out by a tractor the next morning.
Those were the days!

The Cars of My life
By Rob Ockenden
About 1958 my father bought Nellie, a two tone blue used ’55 Plymouth Savoy 4 door sedan. Not a very cool car. As I
moved into my teen years I started maintaining “Nellie” for him, changing oil, replacing brake lines, etc..
About 1964 he was looking to buy a metallic light blue ’63 Chevy Biscayne 4 door. Again, not very cool. When he asked
the salesman what he’d allow him for Nellie on a trade in, “We’ll have to charge you $200 extra if you want to trade that
in.” he quipped. “Well, I guess you’ve got your first car son.” my Dad said.
Working part time weekends and summers at Sam’s Fruit Market, and later at the Firestone Truck and Bus Tire Plant in
Hamilton summers while at college, I drove and maintained that car for about 4 years, even driving her back and forth
weekly to college in Toronto for a couple of years. I replaced her original engine twice, and her transmission so many
times I got a student discount at the local auto wreckers. So good at the tranny swap was I that I could do it in ½ hour,
tires on the ground to tires on the ground! Finally, with one front coil spring broken and her steering box toast, I sold Nellie
for parts to a man with five kids. He repaired all front end mechanicals and drove her around the area for several more
years with his wife all the kids aboard!
Next came a white ’63 Consul 315, “the electric milk truck” as christened by my then girl friend, and now wife. Again, not
a very cool car. My uncle Sid, a British car “Specialist” in Hamilton, had a customer who wanted to sell her car. Before I
saw it I thought it was the earlier Consul with a body style I really liked, and I was sorely disappointed when it turned out
to be a British mid 60’s “Mercury wanna-be”, with four headlamps and an in-sloping rear windscreen! I bought it and she
went to Toronto with me for a couple of years as Nellie had done. I did some mild customizing, (which included removing
her 5 star grill bar and all her badging), followed by a sexy metallic burgundy paint job, vinyl roof, and blacked out rear
panel, where I installed Nellie’s “Savoy” script. Somewhat cooler looking now, but still lacking in the performance department. While parked in the street in front of the college, the car was ticketed many times as a “Savoy”. For a while I had the
tickets cancelled because I’d pop the “Savoy” script, proceed to the local police station and claim innocence because, as
the ownership showed, the car was a “Consul’, not a “Savoy”. They soon caught on though and ticketed the car as “make:
unknown”! Classes weren’t held every day in my 4th year at college, so to save on expenses, I moved out of the apartment I had shared with two former high school buddies for the previous three years and commuted several days a week
to Toronto from my parents’ home in Stoney Creek. Repairs to the Consul got more frequent and more expensive, and I
had little time to do them myself. The monthly payment price advertised for a new ’69 Cortina was significantly less than
what I was putting out monthly for repairs to the Consul, so I went along to have a look. Graduation wasn’t far away, and
with the imminent prospect of a paying job, that’s how I came to buy my 1st new car, an antique gold ’69 Cortina GT 2
door. Very cool! I traded the Consul in on the Cortina, and she ended up being driven to work every day for several years,
by someone working in one of Stelco’s plants. The Cortina soon had Koni shocks fitted, along with custom made wider
wheels and Pirelli tires. I drove her about 42,000 wonderful miles in two years, but after a run-in with a ’64 Pontiac that ran
a red light, I had her repaired then traded her in for a new 105 horse power, very yellow, very “hot” ’71 Toyota Corolla with
special “tune up kit”, racing mirrors, Koni shocks, Pirellis, and wider track wheels, (store bought this time).
Both the Cortina and the Corolla terrorized full size Buicks, Oldsmobile’s, and other big fancy north American V8s when
“drag racing” from stoplights. Both little cars would almost “pull wheelies” as they screamed away, leaving the big iron in
their dust! Good times! But the little Toy blew three head gaskets in the two years I had her, all fixed free by the dealership. The last time the car was 2000 miles over the warrantee, but they still fixed it. It appeared that the car was going to
keep on blowing gaskets, but I knew they wouldn’t continue to fixit for free forever, (“Sorry about your luck”), so a dark
blue German-built ’73 Capri V6, (very cool), sold here through the Mercury dealers, was in my future.
It turned out that the Capri, a great looking, wonderfully performing car, had a fatal flaw too. Without warning it would blow
the diaphragm on the mechanical fuel pump, evicting the engine’s oil out onto the road! Happened three times and I was
lucky to catch it before engine melt down. I traded the car for what I’d paid for it three years previous, and bought a new
’76 Ford Granada 302V8 with floor mounted 3 speed stick and limited slip dif. Enough said!
We left Big Smoke and came to the farm where we’ve had and will continue to have a varied assortment of foreign and
domestic vehicles. But 7 years ago, to get us out once in a while, my wife and I bought “Lilly”, my 1st Morris Minor, and I’d
finally come home! The coolest one yet!!!
Earls Court Motor Show 1962
By John Booth
The problem with attending car shows these days is that very few manufacturers build anything of interest for
those with a passion for older cars. Even today’s cars all pretty well look-alike. And the names they give them
give you no indication as to what it represents. If I were to line up 12 similar makers cars and took all badges
off, I bet there aren’t many of you who could tell who made them? The reasonable alternative would be to hop
in a time machine and dial it up to one’s particular year of interest, but, inconveniently, no one has invented a
time machine yet (at least that we know of). Enter British Pathe, the newsreel archive kind enough to provide
us footage of the 1962 Earls Court Motor Show, now updated to high-resolution video. Though fans of American iron won’t find much of interest on the floor, those with a passion for British cars will certainly enjoy the
six-minute trip into the past. Imagine seeing a new Ford Cortina on the rotating stage, or a Mini Cooper with
a transparent bonnet to show off its 997cc four-cylinder engine, which the narrator boldly proclaims delivers,
“both economy and performance.” The same narrator would quickly find himself unemployed in the modern
world by proclaiming the 850cc, front-wheel-drive Riley Elf (itself a derivative of the Mini) was, “obviously a car
to take the female eye,” implying that women shouldn’t be trusted with more powerful or sporting automobiles.
As for sports cars, the Jaguar E-Type was a mere two years old (and thus still in Series I form), the Lotus Elan
was all-new and the just-introduced Triumph Spitfire promised to be “faster and more luxurious than any sports
car at the same price.” Those hoping for a glimpse of the future, however, were surely disappointed that Rover
had opted not the show their gas turbine model that, “all the world’s waiting for.” The big news at the 1962
Earls Court Motor Show was the opening of the European common market, which held great promise for British automakers. Indeed, the 1960s would prove to be a period of prosperity for many British manufacturers,
but the bright optimism for the future of the nation’s automotive industry would largely be gone by the end of
the 1970s. Perhaps the early 1960s was the best time to visit an auto show in the United Kingdom, and Earls
Court appeared to be as good a venue as any. Until someone invents (or commercializes) a time machine,
videos like this are the best window to the past we’ve got. Enjoy the video.

Old Car Adventures around the UK in 2013
By Tony Fox
Old$Car$Adventures$around$the$UK$in$2013$
By$Tony$Fox$
I get to visit with many different clubs around North America and the UK and one of my favourites is
joining in with the Stag Owners Club (SOC) UK at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Classic car
show in Birmingham. Each year, this show continues to get larger and in 2013 it occupied 10 halls (plus
one more for motorcycles) in the NEC sprawling facility. The SOC have always had a presence there and
this year had four beautiful cars on display together with a hospitality area, which I’m always grateful for
to rest my bones and get a coffee. They constantly ply you with coffee, tea and cookies. The display is
tirelessly organized by president Leslie Phillips and her husband Roger who without fail make you feel
very welcome.
Although all four cars were spectacular, one in particular stood
out as it was the 1970 Pre Production signal red car LD 10,
obviously the tenth car built. It is currently owned and was
restored by Mike Nixon and Malcolm Bryan after many years
of searching for an early production car. This particular car
was used as the press launch car in Belgium 1970, also road
tested by Bill Boddy for the magazine ‘Autocar’. It has been
meticulously refurbished in very accurate detail fitting its
heritage. Being that early in production often means it had
unique parts, some hand made before large-scale production
parts were available
Sitting next door to the SOC stand was the Austin Counties stand with some of Austin’s finest on display.
One car of interest was a Somerset ‘barn find’ - amazing how these cars still come out of the woodwork,
each year there is an example of one make or another at the show. The Counties Stand has always got
vehicles of interest to me , being the Somerset, Devon models of Austin.
A recent feature at the show is the ‘Dream rides’ area sponsored by Sporting Bears Dream Ride where
you could pick from a line up of vehicles for a brief ride around the show area. Rides varied from a D
Type Jaguar to a McLaren MP4 with others such as a pickup truck and an Austin 1300. You are asked for
a donation to a charitable cause.
I’ve noticed in the last couple of years the
rapidly diminishing flea market area (Auto
Jumble as it is called there). This year there
were virtually no older used parts on sale, with
the exception of the shiny-chromed parts such as
mirrors and spotlights and other chrome fittings,
an undue number of these vendors still survive.
Although a large portion of the Classic Car
show is made up of car club stands, probably
50% of the area, there are a varied number of
other attractions such as tools, carpets, car care
products, polishes accessories etc., as well as
cars for sale and auction. The usual larger classic parts suppliers were in attendance such as Rimmer Bros.
with Triumph and MG parts.
Any trip to the UK Midlands is not complete for me without a visit to the Heritage Motor Centre at
Gaydon. Each year they have a varied display of British vehicles on display and they also have a nice
cafeteria there to break up your day. The last couple of years have seen a large display of Aston Martins
used in James Bond movies; this year had a couple from the latest, ‘Skyfall’ one of which is the DB5
beautifully restored. Alongside this facility is the Land Rover display off-road course where you can pay
for an off-road ride. Also nearby is the Aston Martin engineering facility which I keep promising to visit
but have not made it yet. For those members not familiar with the Heritage Trust, you can purchase a
Heritage Certificate for your classic car, a nice piece of
history relating specifically to your vehicle.
If you plan your route correctly you can have your evening
meal (or lunch) at the Stag Inn on the north side of Stratford
on Avon, a nice old hostelry featuring, naturally, the stag.
I passed by the factory where I did my apprenticeship a few
years ago, the Austin Motor Co. Works at Longbridge. I
had quite a shock, all the South Works offices and factory
buildings had been demolished and houses built. The West
works (where my office was) has been gone some time also
the Service dept. All that remains of the old sprawling
Longbridge factory is the Car Assembly Buildings (CAB 1
and 2) which is the home of the Chinese company, MG Motors UK. This is where the MG6 saloon is
assembled, I say assembled as most of the car comes in a crate from China and has very little local added
value.
While in the UK I took the opportunity to get my Stag rear seat belts refurbished by Quickfit Safety Belt
Service in Stanmore, Middlesex. They will refurbish your old and worn belts with new webbing and
whatever else is required. They provide different colour webbing for the belts too; although not original I
chose to match the colours with the upholstery of the tan interior of my Stag, a very pleasing look as they
don’t stand out as much as the black webbing did. It is a personal choice thing.
I got chance to visit my friend Russell Lewis, part of Tate & Lewis that do the Stag ZF automatic
transmission conversions. Russell has a very unique Stag, one of two modified by GKN in the early
1970’s with 4-wheel drive and anti lock brakes. They made a number of conversions to Fords, Chryslers
at that time to showcase the system designed originally by Harry Ferguson and Ferguson Research. They
took two Stags and built in the system, one with 4-speed manual and one automatic transmission. Russell
has the automatic one and naturally has converted it to his own ZF overdrive auto box, making this truly
one of a kind. He has totally refurbished the car making it much nicer than the original conversion which
had a few rough edges; Russell has totally refinished the body to a higher level of finish. In addition to the
ZF transmission, he has added a few other touches of his own such as electric power steering, cruise
control to name a couple.
If you have never visited these venues then I highly recommend you get them on your agenda, of course
there are many more motor enthusiast places to visit such as the Morgan Car co in Malvern, the classic
bus museum in Wythall (mostly double deckers), the Coventry Motor Museum which has free entry. The
other bonus is that for those not interested in peering under the hoods of vehicles, there is so much to visit
in the Midlands from Shakespeare Country, to the Cotswolds to Cadbury’s chocolates.
Happy Motoring and keep the shiny side up

We in the great white north are as
glad as the rest of the nation to be out
of winter. We have been running our
regular monthly gatherings at Williamsford Mill beside the cozy wood fire while
our cars hibernate patiently waiting for
spring. We have already had a tour in
May which ran up to Ted’s Range Road
Diner. Good turnout of people although
I had hoped to see more cars come
along. Ted’s is about as out of bounds
a diner as you will find. The quanset
hut sits on a hill surrounded by farmland and diners can feast on such
delicacies as shrimp, buffalo, elk, venison, ostrich, water buffalo, crocodile and much more. We have one tour planned for each month of spring and
summer up to Pumpkinfest in October. Check the list of events in this newsletter or on the BCCOC website for
details. We would really like to see some of you join us for an event. I was recently informed that Paul Plunkett
aka Mr. Mini has moved from Meaford to Holland Centre. I don’t have any more details at this time but wish the
Plunketts well in their new location.
One of my main focuses this summer will be to be more visible at local cars shows in and effort to attract more
members. We will also be cooperating again with the Kincardine and Area British Car Club at Bluesfest in July.
Remember we have beautiful scenery here and great people.

1967 Austin Mini Estate: came as a 2 for 1 deal with a Cooper. The previous lady owner would not sell the
Cooper separately so this ends up being surplus to my needs. Engine number indicates a high compression 850.
Comp test showed 200 lbs across all cylinders. Have not had running but was told it runs fine. Needs total
restoration as it was stored in high grass and has considerable lower rust. Asking $1800.

Budget 2014: Classic car road tax exemption now rolling at 40 years
There’s good news for classic car owners in the 2014 budget in Britain. From April 2014, the classic car exemption from VED will begin rolling from 40 years, with cars built before January 1974 eligible for a zero-rated
tax disc. Then, from January 2015, the formerly fixed cut-off, will become a rolling one.
The measure, which was announced by the Chancellor of The Exchequer, George Osbourne, means that cars
such as the Ford Escort Mk2 (above) will now be considered ‘tax-free’ from next year. The new cut-off date for
classic vehicles will take effect from 1 April 2014, and covers all cars manufactured before 1 January 1974,
and confirms our prediction that from 2014, VED exemption would move from fixed to rolling.
In the Overview of Legislation and Tax rates for 2014-’15, the treasury states that the rolling benefit will affect
around 10,000 classic car owners per year, who are currently paying VED, but will be newly exempt from 2015.
According to the document, which was issued following the budget, the government considers the classic car
industry to be an important part of the nation’s historical heritage. According to research by the Historic Vehicle
Research Institute and the Federation of British Historic Vehicles Clubs, in its publication The British Historic
Vehicle Movement: A £4 Billion Hobby, the historic car industry employs about 28,000 people in the UK. The
government also predicts that this change will be revenue neutral for the treasury.
So, from 1 April 2015, vehicles built 40 years ago will be added to the scope of the exemption. The exemption
cut-off date in Schedule 2 of the Act will be changed to 1 January 1974 to apply from 1 April 2014 as announced at Budget 2013, and to 1 January 1975 to apply from 1 April 2015 as announced at Budget 2014.
We’ve already given you a run-down of some of the cool classic cars, introduced in 1973, that will be newly
VED-free from April 2014 - and, from January next year, with the rolling exemption set at 40 years, more new
cars come in, such as the BMW 3-Series, Ferrari 308, Jaguar XJ-S, Ford Escort Mk2, Princess (below) and
Triumph TR7.
Also in the budget, it was confirmed that VED - your tax discs - can now be bought and paid for monthly, and
you will need to cash in your tax when you sell your car, leaving the next owner liable to buy a new tax disc.
This logical move has been introduced to reduce tax administration costs.

2015 Club Calendar Order Form
The new club calendars are available, same price as last year if picked up in person, not often these days you can say
that. Unfortunately, our Post Office has increased the mailing costs. We have just as many members’ car pictures in there
as prior years which is 4 per page. Now $12.00 plus $3.33 mailing (Canada) or save the $3.33 and pick them up at one
of our chapter meetings. USA mailing has gone up to $5.15 for a single calendar. If you order and are not in a hurry I can
mail from the USA and save on that. This year we have made a push to have the Calendars available early at British Car
Day in Bronte Park. You can pick yours up there and save the mailing costs or reserve one with me for later pick up.
Please send your order to Tony Fox, 5089 Bromley Road, Burlington, ON L7L 3E4.
