Charl Van Wyk, Private Consultant, Van Wyk and Associates
Charl’s presentaon will address commonly experienced reacons to grief and loss. This session will look at the:
emoonal; cognive; physical; spiritual and social reacons. Charl will provide helpful and praccal suggesons and will also
include contemporary grief theories and a list of resources.
Charl will be known to many people in the funeral industry of WA from his involvement with Purslowe Funeral Homes in the 1990’s
and with InvoCare into the 2000’s where Charl ran bereavement counselling, grief support and community educaon services first
for Mareena Purslowe and then the Purslowe Group of Funeral Companies. Later this developed into a training and management
role and took Charl to Victoria. During Charl’s me with Purslowe’s he established what is believed to be Australia’s first Family
Bereavement Support Program for Drug Related Deaths.
Gary Cooper, Principal Registrar, Office of the State Coroner
Gary’s presentaon will address the coronial process, what happens when someone dies and some of the problems encountered
along the way. Gary will also provide an update on changes at the Coroner’s Court and proposed amendments to the legislaon.
Gary has been at the Coroner's Court for the past 8 years, first as Manager and now as Principal Registrar. Before emigrang to WA
in 1998 Gary served with disncon as a ‘bobby’ in the UK police for over 20 years. Gary is admi.ed as a Barrister and Solicitor in
WA and has worked at the Ombudsman's Office, An-Corrupon Commission, Corrupon and Crime Commission, Legislave
Council of the WA Parliament, Legal Aid and in private pracce.
