PREVIEW MEN'S SLALOM – Sunday 22 Jan 2017 Kristoffersen looking to repeat last season's streak Henrik Kristoffersen has won the last two World Cup slalom races, in Adelboden on 8 January and in Wengen on 15 January. The last skier to win three consecutive Slalom races was Kristoffersen himself, as he won four in a row in January 2016. That run also started with wins in Adelboden and Wengen before Kristoffersen won in Kitzbühel on 24 January 2016 and in Schladming on 26 January 2016. Kristoffersen could become the first skier to win successive Slalom races in Kitzbühel since 2007, when Jens Byggmark won both Slalom races held in one weekend. The last skier to win the Slalom in Kitzbühel in consecutive seasons was Kalle Palander in 2002-2003. In total, Kristoffersen has won four of the six World Cup Slalom races held this season. Only last season he won more Slalom races in a single World Cup season (6). He can become the third skier to win at least five Slalom races in two consecutive seasons, after Ingemar Stenmark (1975/76, 1976/77) and Marc Girardelli (1983/84, 1984/85). Kristoffersen has won 13 World Cup Slalom races, one shy of Mario Matt and Benjamin Raich in joint-sixth place on the all-time victory list for men. He has only won more World Cup Slalom races in Switzerland (4) than in Austria (3, twice in Schladming, once in Kitzbühel). Kristoffersen could surpass Marc Girardelli (also 13) in second place on the all-time Slalom victory list for men before turning 23 years. Only Ingemark Stenmark (20) won more before his 23rd birthday. Hirscher still eyeing 20th Slalom win Marcel Hirscher won the first World Cup Slalom race of this season in Levi on 13 November, but failed to win any of the five races held since. He finished second on three occasions, next to finishing third in Adelboden and sixth in Zagreb. His five podium places are joint-most for any skier this season together with Henrik Kristoffersen. The last time he failed to win in six consecutive World Cup Slalom races he participated in was between January and December 2011, when he had only won one World Cup Slalom race in his career. He can become the seventh man to win at least 20 World Cup races in a single discipline after Ingemar Stenmark (46 Giant Slalom, 40 Slalom), Alberto Tomba (35 Slalom), Franz Klammer (25 Downhill), Ted Ligety (24 Giant Slalom), Hermann Maier (24 Super G) and Michael von Grünigen (23 Giant Slalom). Hirscher has also won 19 Giant Slalom World Cup races. He can claim multiple Slalom wins in for the sixth consecutive season. Only Stenmark has previously achieved this as he won at least two Slalom races in 10 successive seasons, from 1974-1975 to 1983-1984. Information provided by Hirscher finished second in the last two World Cup Slalom races in Kitzbühel - no skier has claimed second place in Kitzbühel in three consecutive editions. The only Austrians with more podium finishes in Slalom races in Kitzbühel than Hirscher (3) are Mario Matt (6) and Thomas Sykora (4). Coming into this weekend, Austrians were one short of 50 World Cup wins in Kitzbühel. Only in Val d'Isère, skiers from one country have won more races (Austria, 52). Neureuther hoping to continue success at favourite snow Felix Neureuther started 2017 with a second place in the Slalom in Zagreb, a fourth place in Adelboden and a third place in Wengen. His two podium finishes in his last three Slalom races are equal to his total podium finishes in his last 16 Slalom races prior to this run. The last time Neureuther finished on the podium in consecutive Slalom races was in January 2015, when he won in Wengen and successively finished third in Kitzbühel and Schladming. His four podium finishes in the Slalom in Kitzbühel (twice first, once second and once third) are equal-most for him at any venue together with Wengen. Only Ingemar Stenmark (8), Alberto Tomba (6) and Mario Matt (6) have more podium finishes in Kitzbuehel. He can become the fourth skier to claim at least three Slalom victories in Kitzbühel, after Stenmark (5), Jean Noël Augert (3) and Marc Girardelli (3). Other contenders Manfred Mölgg has claimed three podium finishes in the Slalom this season, including a win in Zagreb. Only Kristoffersen and Hirscher (both 5) have more. Mölgg claimed all these podium finishes after his 34th birthday. Only Thomas Stangassinger (4) claimed more top-3 finishes in the Slalom after turning 34. No man has won multiple Slalom races aged 34 or older. Only in 2007/08, when he won the Slalom standings, Mölgg finished more often on the podium of a Slalom race in a single World Cup season (5). Alexis Pinturault has not finished on a World Cup Slalom podium this season. His best result is a seventh place, set in Madonna di Campiglio on 22 December. Pinturault's last Slalom podium finish was his win in Wengen on 19 January 2014. Daniel Yule is currently in sixth place in the World Cup Slalom standings. He claimed a fourth place in Zagreb, his best career World Cup Slalom result. The last Swiss skier to finish on the podium of a World Cup Slalom race was Silvan Zurbriggen in Schladming in 2010. Didier Plaschy was the last Swiss man to finish on a Slalom podium in Kitzbühel as he claimed a second place in 1999. Information provided by Venue stats Kitzbühel will host a World Cup race for a record 49th season. On 21 January 1967 Jean-Claude Killy won the first race here (Downhill). The last seven men's World Cup races in Kitzbühel were won by seven different skiers. Marc Girardelli is the most successful ski racer in this town with seven World Cup race victories. Didier Cuche, Hermann Maier and Pirmin Zurbriggen follow with six wins each. Coming into this weekend, Austrians are one short of 50 wins in Kitzbühel. Only in Val d'Isère have ski racers from one country won more World Cup races, as Austrians have 52 victories there. The last Austrian to win a World Cup race in Kitzbühel is Hannes Reichelt (coming into the weekend). He won the Downhill on 25 January 2014.
