Town of Bassano Newsletter
November 2014
Edition
Notice to the Residents & Bulk Water Users
of the
Town of Bassano
The water transmission main from Newell Regional Services- Water Treatment Plant in Brooks,
to the Town of Bassano has been completed!
We are now building a pump station to increase the water flow and pressure to the Town of Bassano.
It is anticipated that by early December
Newell Regional Services Corporation (NRSC) will begin to supply water to the Town of Bassano
Further information on the exact date will be forthcoming.
Since, October 2012, NRSC has been using a method of water disinfection with the addition of ammonia to chlorine to
change the disinfection process to chloramines. Chloramines are proven to be very effective in the treatment of water
that has to travel long distances from the treated source to the end user.
Chloramines have been approved for use by Health Canada, Alberta Health and Alberta Environment. NRSC meets and
exceeds all Canadian Drinking Water Quality Standards. Those standards are rigorously monitored by our treatment
plant operators, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Environment.
However, chloramines are required to be removed from water for those that are practicing home hemodialysis (kidney
dialysis). Alberta Health Services monitors those home patients.
For those that have fish in home aquariums, chloramines should also be removed from the water. Chloramines can be
removed using chemicals or a carbon filter before water is introduced into a fish tank or removed using special drops that
are available at local pet stores.
If you require further information on chloramines please see our website at: www.nrsc.ca. On the site are FAQ’s and Answers, directions to Health Canada and other water authorities in Canada and the United States.
NRSC welcomes all Town of Bassano residents and our system operators are keen to provide a Safe, Secure and Sustainable water System as well as dependable and excellent Service!

worry about penalties. Sign up for the TIPPS
program. More info available on the Town’s

2.
Please clear snow off your sidewalk within 24 hours after snowfall.
Deposit snow on your property not on the street.
Please do not run your power cords over the sidewalk. They are
tripping hazards. Cords need to be 2.5 meters suspended over the
sidewalk in a safe manner.
Bylaw fines will be issued for non compliance. The
Bylaw can be viewed on the Town’s Website at
www.bassano.ca
Council is confirming that the Town does not hire private
individuals to remove snow from sidewalks located adjacent
to private property. Due to liability issues, Council is asking
individuals to STOP clearing snow from sidewalks not adjacent to their own property other than contracted to do so.
Please provide the water meter reader free access to read
your meter. Remove snow and debris.
Plastic Recycling
There has been some confusion over the reasons for not accepting plastic
materials. We at BARRA (Bassano Area Resource Recovery Association)
have been advised that due to the fact Plastic must now be sorted into 12 different types; we do not have the staff to deal with this. Plastic had life of 5000
years and unlike other materials does not emit toxic chemicals. Recycling is
great for the environment but some costs such as labour and transportation
do not make it viable.
