The Lantern – Summer 2014

C. C. Young Senior Living • Senior Care
from the PRESIDENT & CEO
G
reetings to you! Time
has flown by since taking office last July. The
last year has been busy for all of
us: our team, our culture and our
campus are transforming. If you
haven’t been here
in a while, you
need to come see
what’s happening
at C. C. Young.
Right now,
the most visible
change is the
Central Park.
Thanks to our
most ardent supporter and friend,
Nancy Ann Hunt, the center of the
campus is becoming another venue
where residents and guests can
gather and enjoy nature. The park
will feature a 10- by 30-foot water
wall and a covered pavilion, which
will seat up to 100 for outdoor
events. We will also have a memory walk lined with 30-foot tall live
oak trees and benches. This Central Park will literally be central
to everything on campus, and we
could not be more thrilled for our
residents, families and staff.
We just finished renovating
The Blanton — top to bottom —
and added nine additional residences. Each residential floor was
painted and carpeted, and the first
floor (lobby, dining room, etc.) is
completely renovated. The transformation is amazing! This building is now on par with any Assisted Living facility in the country.
I’m happy to report that the new
apartments are already occupied.
Besides “bricks and sticks,”
there are other non-tangible
changes to report. We have new
staff, new roles and a new focus on
customer service and hospitality.
We are striving to clearly define
expectations of our staff and hold
them accountable. These changes
are not something to list in a report, but rather something to
actually ‘feel’ and experience for
yourself.

Transforming life on campus with new
Central Park and updates at The Blanton
L
ook around and it’s apparent:
C. C. Young is transforming! Work
on our Central Park is in process
and the much anticipated changes to The
Blanton are now complete.
On June 18, residents and families
were invited for an open house to visit and
view the “new” Blanton, with its newly
added apartments and a fresh, new look of
the lobby, dining area and the first floor.
Nine new apartments have been added
to the building, and its dining area has
been enlarged and enhanced. It now includes a renovated state-of-the-art kitchen
and individual stations where guests may
order and watch as their food is prepared.
The lobby and multipurpose room also
have a whole new look.

Construction on the Central Park
launched March 20 with a ground-breaking ceremony where Russell Crews, President and CEO of C. C. Young, expressed

New chef of Conley’s and 4833 calls food his passion
M
att Reddick has joined
C. C. Young as Chef de Cuisine,
responsible for food served at
both Conley’s and 4833 in The Overlook.
He describes himself as a passionate and
serious cook who sees what emerges from
his kitchen as a reflection of his and his
teammates’ work.
Matt graduated from the culinary
school at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. He later worked in London, England, at a renowned restaurant
called The House, and won a “best young
chef ” competition while there.
Since returning to America and Dallas, he has worked in various restaurants,
including Wolfgang Puck’s, Victor Tangos,
Nonna’s and II Cane Rosso.
His culinary skills have resulted in
features on WFAA-TV’s “Good Morning
Texas” and the Food Network’s “Diners
Drive-Ins and Dives.” He has cooked with
some of Dallas’ greatest chefs, including
Dean Fearing and Kent Rathbun.
Free LifeBio class at The Point helps you tell your life story
T
he story of your life is uniquely
yours, and nobody knows more
about your personal history than
you. You may have wanted to “write your
biography” — or some version of it — for
years but not known how to start.
C. C. Young offers a program called
LifeBio for residents as well as Point
members, volunteers and residents’ family
members for that express purpose — all at
no cost to them.
Through the LifeBio Class 101, you:
• Tell your story your way — you
decide how much and what you want to
share, in brief vignettes or a longer version
• Receive a workbook with tons of
suggested topics to get you started and use
to capture memories outside class
• Are encouraged to use photos,
personal mementos, newspaper clippings
or anything else that illustrates your life
experiences.
Several classes of participants have already “graduated” and have great things to
say about their experience. Call 214-8412831 now to learn more and enroll. Class
sizes are limited.
Note: A web version of LifeBio is also
available that guides visitors through the journaling process online. To learn how to access
the site free of charge, call the number above.

Residents throw some light on a problem at Lawther Point
T
here are 43 new floor lamps in the
rooms on Lawther Point West,
third floor (LPW3). They didn’t
just appear, but are there because residents
saw a need for them and did something
about it.
While visiting friend Alice Wilcox
on LPW3, C. C. Young resident Anita
Hullum, 89, noticed that lighting was
inadequate for her friend to read or do
other close-up work. Floor lamps were the
answer but they needed to meet certain
criteria: tall, on a heavy base and with pull
chains for two levels of brightness.
Resident Advocate Dess Rolfe and
Anita went lamp shopping at the Dallas
Market Center, coming up with nothing
after walking what seemed like 10,000
miles, said Anita. But, at last when they
were about to decide what they needed
didn’t exist, they found the perfect lamp
that met all their qualifications.
Once Anita explained the lamp project, others joined her by making donations. The group recently toured LPW3
once the lights were purchased and in
place and loved the feedback they got
from the residents. Besides serving a purpose, Dess also hears that the lamps give
the rooms a warm, “homey” feeling.
“It’s nice seeing where our money went
and that the lamps are being enjoyed,” says
Anita. “And helping someone is good for
your soul.”
Anita Hullum poses with one of the
new lamps she and other residents
donated to Lawther Point West.

Gloria Lott recaps 34 years of service at C. C. Young
G
loria Lott describes herself as
green as possible when she started working at C. C. Young. Now,
it’s 34 years later, and Gloria has more
years of service than anyone on staff.
The people at work — fellow staff
members, volunteers, and residents and
their family members — are the best part
of her tenure.
“We’re all family out here, and that’s
how I look at our residents, too,” she says.
As a central supply clerk, she’s responsible for purchasing and inventory of
nursing supplies on LPE1, LPW2, LPW3
and The Cove. She works with nursing
staff to ensure that supplies in the locked
rooms in these locations are stocked and
Gloria Lott
every item is accounted for.
Her first job was in patient care,
helping nursing staff take care of residents
requiring patient-care services. She
later provided Home Health Services to
residents in Independent Living, helping
them with personal care such as bathing
and other needs.
Later, she helped out when C. C.
Young operated an open-to-the-public
senior-care center more than a decade
ago, which was available for a per-person
daily fee.
Tiffany Tello, Administrator for the
Health Center and Gloria’s supervisor,
says they have worked together for almost
20 years.
“Whatever Gloria is asked to do, she’s
always willing to help out. That kind of
flexibility is one thing that makes her such
a great employee,” says Tiffany.

Events and the commitment of fundraisers help grow the
C. C. Young Benevolence Fund
Y
ou’ve probably heard of the
C. C. Young Benevolence Fund
but do you understand its purpose? It was created to provide ongoing
financial resources to residents who have
depleted their financial resources and
it allows them to continue to call C. C.
Young home.
People and organizations in the
community also realize the value of this
endeavor, which is why successful
fundraising efforts occur throughout the
year.
For example, Whole Foods in Dallas’
Lakewood area got behind the benevolence initiative by donating 5 percent of
store sales on April 29.
“We are excited and grateful to Whole
Foods for this partnership opportunity,”
said Russell Crews, President and CEO
of C. C. Young. “Proceeds from this day of
giving will provide funding for residents who
have outlived their financial resources.”
Another event — C. C. Young’s Wrap
It Up Luncheon and Fashion Show —
took place at The Mansion on Turtle
Creek on November 21. A champagne reception preceded lunch along with “wrapit-up shopping” provided by participating
on-site vendors.
Each year, a reception and dinner
allow C. C. Young to honor a community
leader for his or her philanthropic dedication. This year’s honoree was Jay McAuley,
Jay McAuley (center), recipient of C. C. Young’s Servant Leadership
Award, stands among friends at a dinner in his honor on April 15. Also

who was presented the Servant Leadership Award.
Mr. McAuley, President of Texas
Health Resources Foundation, serves
on the executive boards of the Cotton
Bowl Athletic Association, the Circle 10
Council of Boy Scouts of America and is
a member of the Salesmanship Club of
Dallas, CONTACT Board, Executives in
Action and the C. C. Young Foundation
for Body, Mind and Spirit.
The Third Annual C. C. Young Classic
Golf Tournament has been set for Monday, October 13, at Bent Tree Country
Club. Steve Folsom is honorary chair
for the event which promises to be even
better this year.
“I’m honored to work with C. C.
Young and support their Benevolence
Fund,” he said. “The programs and
offerings available by C. C. Young and
their dedication to arts, education, fitness,
health and wellness are vital to the quality of life. Supporting our seniors in their
journey, regardless of their financial position, is both important and rewarding.”
There’s still time to sign up for a great
day of golf. See page 8 to read more and
register so you, too, can help keep our
Benevolence Fund alive and thriving.
