Maisuangdibou, FFRRC, Kottayam, Kerala iangmai is one of the indigenous communities settled in North-Eastern part of India. They have rich traditional resources, history and social principles with wide range of ethical-moral and human values. It is a patriarchal yet an egalitarian society where a communitarian value and principle bind the community since time immemorial. Majority of Liangmais are Protestant Christians with few Roman Catholics. In the social system, like all the communities of the world, the ‘family’ is considered as the basic social unit, and ‘marriage’ a sacred covenant between wife and husband, therefore, there is nothing such as contract marriage in the community. In the family, both husband and wife play an important role in building and structuring the family. Moreover, children grow and develop interest, values and practices by implicitly and explicitly copying their parents. Looking at the present trend of Liangmai society, one can say that the Liangmai family is in the stage of shifting. This is because of the new experience of modern world with modern values and teachings. Many Liangmai families are well adjusted with the present situations and changes. But many families are in a state of dilemma not being able to rebuild their family. It is observed in general that couples’ relationship began in exuberant promises. However, commit6 ments made with the best of intentions turn sour and are either abandoned or diminished. Here, it can be pointed out that divorce is minimal in the Liangmai society, but, there are many broken families due to breakdown of relationship between husband and wife mostly as a result of cheating, misunderstanding, alcoholism of the husband and economic problems. Modernization and globalization also play a vital role in both building and dismantling of relationship in the Liangmai society. Above all, it is worth mentioning that in many Liangmai families, unequal allocation of power, decision-making, opportunities for growth, radical practice of patriarchal system by male folks, assertion of individualism, spiritual breakdown are witnessed as some of the root causes of marital anger, unhappiness, conflict and divorce. Even midyear marriages break down due to transition in life such as baby birth, growing up of the children and their demands, children separated from parents due to education or training or job. Biblical Model of Relationship with Special Reference to Ephesians 5: 2125 The Bible clearly delineates that the purpose of God creating the whole universe is to have relationship. He created all things to relate and communicate April-May 2014 with Him as well as with one another. He created human beings in his “likeness” (or in the “image of God” Gen 1: 26-27, and this “image” of God can be best understood as relationship). Again, the account of God’s election of Israel as the light of the world was to make them as the community that transmits and relates God’s love to the whole world. In the New Testament, God’s redemption and reconciliation in and through the person Jesus Christ is the solid foundation of rebuilding relationship between God and the sinful world. Thus, Jesus came to this world to rebuild the broken horizons/ verticals between God and all creations. Again, we can add a theological model of “Trinity” as a perfect image of relationship between God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Firstly let us emphasize on Eph 5: 2125. It begins with the household codes presuppose that Christians should be subjected themselves to one other. But what does it mean to “be subjected” or to “subordinate” to one another? In the ancient world, women’s subordination and obedience to their husbands was so universally accepted without much question. And Paul the writer of Ephesians was the child of his time therefore we cannot expect something modern/postmodern ideas from him. He never experienced ‘democracy’ as witnessed in the modern time, nor, there was no strict or universal understanding of “human rights” as the people understand in the contemporary world, nor modern understanding of “fundamental rights” was absent, and the idea of human “equality” during his time was only within male-folks and women, children and slaves were not equal per se. In such context, the pertinent question is: Was Paul breaking way from the conventional rules and teachings of his time? In Galatians he clearly says, “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3: 28, also compare Col 3: 11). It clearly depicts that Paul was a man of his time; yet, he taught beyond the conformist understanding that was prevailing in his time, which means many of his teachings are parallel to many modern teachings. Coming back to the passage, Paul outlines wives to subordinate to their husbands, as “husband is the head of wife”. Here, Paul metaphorically used ‘head’ for an order of hierarchical subordination, which is related to I Corinth 11: 3, Eph 5: 23 where Christ position is referred as ‘head’ of the church. This is paradox as the ‘head’ washed his disciples feet and even died for the church/world. Similarly, Paul begins the exhortation to husbands with “love your wives,” but omit the conventional “never treat them harshly” found in Col 3: 19. Instead, Paul develops the body of Christ motif. For him, Christ’s self-sacrifice is a model to be imitated (Eph 5: 2). Here, Paul speaks of the church as the pure bride of Christ (II Corinth 11: 2). This extended description of the church as a bride highlights what has been accomplished by Christ’s self-giving love by dying on the cross. This line thus answer to the critical question – how does Christ 7 Kajinghiu-Karamhiu 2014 love the church. In likewise, husbands should love their wives with similar devotion and commitment. This organic relationship of Christ and the church is fundamental. Thus, Paul calls for mutual submission and service in such passages as Gal 5: 13b and Phil 2: 3-4. In fact, it is a call for selflessness and a regard for others that does not insist on one’s rights but follow the example of Christ life. Here, Christ/Spirit-centred relationship is crucial to restore the broken walls of families. Thus, it should give life and help people to re-discover and re-develop their unique personhood and relationship in the likeness of the ‘divine’ (the mutual relationship within the ‘Trinity’ is a role model). Spiritually-centred life in the light of ‘respect’ and ‘love’ is thus central in order to reconcile any broken family in the Liangmai society. Critical Reflection It is worth appropriating the biblical passage (Eph 5: 21-25) by delineating that a complete couple life is a ‘life’ where wife should respect her husband and subject to him as the ‘head’ of the family just as Christ is the head of the church, likewise, husband should love his wife just as Christ loves the church. The critical equation is that if wife does not respect her husband as her ‘head’ she cannot demand his true love. Moreover, husband cannot demand the genuine respect of his wife if he does not love his wife like Christ loves the church. The beauty here is that both the ‘respect’ of wife and ‘love’ of husband come only in the model of Christ loves the church and died for her. Here, a genuine de8 mand for husband is to sacrifice his life and his interest for his wife. Reciprocally, wife should respect her husband as a true church respect and worship Christ in dedication, mission, evangelism and praxis. Conclusion Every committed relationship is thus based on an understanding of what each person’s privileges and rights, obligations and duties are within that relationship. Practically, compromising our self interest is crucial in relationship building. Moreover, respecting partner’s interest and any constructive discussions will help the family to grow better. Again, spending quality time with our partner is critical in encountering misunderstanding and lack of communication that is brought in the family by the spirit of individualism. When families are broken, the society and church can never function well. This is because all the members of the church are the “body of Christ” and if one member is facing difficulty the whole body of Christ (the church) is affected. In such a context, the message of Paul in Ephesians 5: 21-25 is a great reminder as well as a challenge for all Liangmai couples to re-dedicate their life in building relationship in Christ and with one another and with the whole world. It is the mission of our church and the society to actively participate in the reconstruction of ‘relationship’ in married couples’ life. April-May 2014 Being Unique Benthu Dailiam, Jalukie A water bearer had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master’s house, the cracked pot carried only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one end a half pot full of water in his master’s home. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. “I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you”. “Why?” asked the bearer. “What are you ashamed of?” “I have been able, for the past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master’s house. Because of my flaws you have to do all of this work and you don’t get full value from your efforts,” the pot said. The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, “As we return to the mater’s house I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path”. Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail it still felt bad because it leaked half of its load and so again the pot apologized to the bearer for its failure. The bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path? That’s because I have always known about your flaw and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path and everyday while we walk back from stream you’ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master’s table. Without you being just the way you are he would not have this beauty to grace his house”. Moral: Do not underestimate yourself by comparing yourself with others. It’s our differences that make us beautiful. Your flaw has purposes. 9 Kajinghiu-Karamhiu 2014 A letter to Liangmai Christian Fellowship, Delhi (LCFD) Dr. Widinibou Charengna T his letter is to promote good relationship, good values and good life for LCFD in particular and to the people of Liangmai in general. It is better to have good feelings in order to enjoy a good life that God has given us. This letter was fragmented into two parts i.e. for parents and youths. Dear LCFD parents, Children are our most precious resource, but a good parent or parent-like figures are becoming almost extinct. From the earliest years the children should be taught to speak respectfully and lovingly to their parents and elders. They should be taught only words of gentleness and truth, and purity must be part of their lips. Let the parents themselves be learners in the school of Christ. They should speak of the mercy and loving-kindness of God. It is the duty of parents to train their children with correct speaking habit. Most parents love their children in one sense, but often they provoke or hurt their little ones by calling them with ugly names and at times threaten to slap it which is opposite the way Christian parents should love their children. How many fathers and mothers under provocation are making severe threats to punish their children and at the same time calling them ugly brats, mean kids, little imps, etc? Such parents are not proper Christians, no matter what may be their profession. They do not com10 prehend the true nature of Christianity if they believe themselves to be Christians while having such feelings and use such terms toward their children. Even as children visit worldly places of amusement like picnics, a show, parties, dances, etc., parents should pray for them and give them good guidance in everything so that they may not depart from God. Parents should not allow their children for excessive use of internet, games, mobile etc., through which they can defile and ruin their lives. It is parents’ responsibility and duty to make their children obey laws. No doubt parents should focus their attention on children at the same time they should not neglect their own spouse. Couples need to love each other which will become a good example for children. Some suggestions: F Be transparent to each other F Never keep secrets in money matters F Do not spend money on your relatives without the knowledge of your spouse F Love your children equally F Go to church together with your family F Both should love each other’s relatives F Wife should be a good host to the guests April-May 2014 F Wife should have a humble character F Couple should not fight or quarrel in front of children F Husband should not doubt his wife’s movement F Husband should be a teetotaller F When you suddenly hear peculiar sounds from kitchen be sure that somebody wants to draw your attention F Do not promise your children more than your capacity F Remove the word prestige from your dictionary (between wife and husband there is no question of prestige) F Little quarrels are necessary between the couples to understand each other and to rectify your mistakes F Don’t blame your religious leaders; they are doing a good job. Let’s be honest, your criticism and mastery dominance upon your leaders can hurt their sentiments. No one enjoys wield influence and hearing something negative in their leadership. Liangmai are a special people chosen by God to be an example to those living around us. Dear LCFD youths, normally every human eye is attracted by fine and costly clothes, fashionable style of dressing and bright jewelleries. Today we live in a post modern period when everything is getting mixed up. The present youngster today educated or uneducated consciously or unconsciously adapt the western style which discard the precious biblical truth culture. The youth today, immediately imitate the style of western hero or heroine through movies, fashion, hairs style without any shame and question in their mind. Initially such imitation allows or invites to unbiblical practice like immorality, violence, killing and bring chaotic in the society. Many youth are unemployed, so they go out to other state or metropolitan cities for earning money. They work together with Muslim and Hindu and it’s up to them to be more careful and not practice unlawful activities. Remember that, your youth should be spent wisely and escape from worldly glamorous. Ask God to provide you with the strength to help you avoid and walk away from temptations. Youth life has lots of dreams and expectations. Sometimes they have wild expectations and some people have mild expectations. It is good to have some expectation but somewhere or other you need to compromise on certain matters. Let’s examine the following expectations: Expectations of man, frank expression: F Should be good looking, outward beauty F Need some help in the kitchen and washing clothes F Should be tall and healthy (honestly speaking) F Graduate with government job (why not private jobs?) F Should be presentable in the congregations F Fearing God F Predominantly feminine trait Expectations of girl, frank expression: 11 Kajinghiu-Karamhiu 2014 F Should be religious/fearing God F Wish to have a husband more educated than them F Should be brilliant and educated F Should be good looking and good character F Should be presentable F Fair complexion and tall F Post graduate with central or state government job F Should own a house and a car (men without a house and a car are not eligible to marry?) F Not staying with parents after marriage (if you are a man, will you agree?) Expectations can be your greatest strength but they can also be your worst enemy if they aren’t a realistic one. Do not expect your married life to be like a cinema/fairytale type married life. EVERY BODY NEEDS TO RE-THINK ABOVE THE STATEMENTS. THERE CANNOT BE GOOD HOPE UNLESS WE DIGEST THIS KIND OF CENTRAL ARDENT STATEMENT. Don’t need to tell you where and when this event is going to start, but let me remind you; the countdown is less than 35 days. Forget about those public anger and protests happening in and around the host nation; those things happen in or before every big occasion. You can see a trailer of it in the UEFA Champions League showdown on 24th of May, 2014; don’t know if you are a Real Madrid or an Atletico Madrid fan. Right after this our hearts would turn towards Brazil. Could not buy a single match ticket or book a flight ticket. It does not matter if you are the same with me. The spectators in the stadiums will be deprived of the slow-motions such as moments of the way goals are scored, excellence, brilliance, magic, beauty and skills of the players more than once in clarity. There are no such things as who are stronger or weaker. They are hungry to lift the cup, and you know that every nation is made to qualify through tough and rigorous processes like qualifying rounds and play-offs, except for the host nation. Of all the 32 teams if I were to choose five countries that seem more imminent of lifting this 2014 FIFA World Cup, without a moment’s hesitation I’d definitely pick Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina and Portugal. Glad that I have this chance T 22 of sharing my thoughts about these five countries. BRAZIL: You may or may not know that they are the five time world champions and reaching the final in two opportunities. They won in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. But do you know that Brazil is the only country to take part in all FIFA World Cups since 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946, due to 2nd World War), with most wins and goals scored in the history of the competition? Brazil produced many greats like – Pele, Garrincha, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. And these are why there is always a tendency in every football fan’s psyche to love, cheer and support Brazil. This year too talented youngsters like Neymar, Oscar, Hulk and David Luiz will spearhead in the tournament. Luiz Felipe Scolari will be managing this team and they rank now 4th in the latest FIFA rankings. This team will be the most cheered team, and you know that. The only fear Brazil has now was the nightmare of the 1950 World Cup; Uruguay ran away with the trophy from right under their nose under the roof of Maracana stadium, which again this year will be hosting the grand finale, with a scoreline 2-1. There is an added home advantage for them. This is why favoring this team will be a joy. You will hardly feel the pangs of loss if you are to support Brazil, considering the talents they possess this time. SPAIN: Spain is one of the eight countries to have won the FIFA World Cup, which they did at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. They have made 13 appearances out of the 19 tournaments, six fewer than Brazil. They boast of April-May 2014 Casillas, Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Fabregas and the latest star Diego Costa, who chooses to represent his adopted country. Vicente del Bosque will be the head coach and they rank number 1 now in the FIFA rankings. Their style of tiki-taka will again be their most prized-possession. No doubt, they will be hungry to defend the title. Cheering this team, you will feel an orchestra-like moment! GERMANY: They are the three time world champions in 1954, 1974 and 1990 and four time runner-up. They have made 17 appearances and the second most frequent along with Italy. Players like Klose, Lahm, Neuer, Schweinsteigger and Ozil will be the ones whom to watch out for. Their attacking style is a real joy to watch. Joachim Loew will the coach and they rank 2nd in the FIFA rankings now. Miroslav Klose will be seeking for more goals; he will be keen to break Brazilian Ronaldo’s FIFA World Cup goal scoring record of 15 goals. He has now 14. Don’t you want to see him breaking that record? ARGENTINA: They have won two World Cups in 1978 and 1986 and has been runner-up twice in 1930 and 1990. They have made 15 appearances. Maradona single-handedly won the 1986 World Cup. In the same tournament’s quarterfinal round, he scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over England that entered football history, though for two different reasons. The first goal was via an unpenalised handball known as the “Hand of God”, while the second goal followed a 60m dribble past five England players. Alejandro Sabella will be managing the team and they rank 7th in the FIFA rankings now. This time they have Messi, Aguero, Di Maria, Mascherano and Higuain. Messi, the captain, will be leading his team. Can he deliver the cup this time? Only time will tell. And why not? He, along with such talented team mates, can add atleast one more title. PORTUGAL: Their best performance so far in the FIFA World Cups was the third place in 1966. They have made 6 appearances. Paulo Bento will be managing the team and they rank 3rd in the FIFA rankings now. The 3rd place in the 1966 World Cup, inspired by Eusebio, who recently passed away, is something the team can draw inspiration from. Portugal has Ronaldo, Coentrao, Pepe and Raul Meireles. The country’s highest scorer, Ronaldo, the captain, will be hoping to give his best performance for his beloved country. He knows that the whole of Portugal is keeping the greatest faith in him to bring the trophy home. There are some footballers who entertain more than anybody else. There are surprises in every World Cup; we have been witnessing some young players shining bright and sealing their names to a star status. But for now you can watch out for Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Diego Costa and Neymar. Now I shall be trimming them only to two. Do you ever hear a phrase ‘Ronaldo Vs Messi’? They have been the talking point since the recent six or seven years; have been a subject of the most talked-debate. Football enthusiasts, critics and fans around the world are finding hard to say who between 23 Kajinghiu-Karamhiu 2014 the two is a better one. Its ironical; I have witnessed; their debate divide families and friends. Now, I’m about to jump into that debate. As a fan, I would give my vote to the Portuguese. There are obvious reasons of my admiration and passion for him; his hardwork and true professionalism, his obsession for perfection, his quality of both style and substance and his dream to be the best. They say Ronaldo comes the first and leaves the last during every practice session. Both have, in the club level, won everything that there has to be won, but they have one thing in common; they have not won a single World Cup for their respective countries. Pele and Maradona are still talked-about even now; much of their contemporaries’ greatness, who were their equal, have begun to be considered ordinary. Both won the World Cup; there is always a tendency that people only remember the greatness of the World Cups. Cristiano and Leo can instill that kind of impact to the world if they or any of them manage to lift this year’s World Cup. Ronaldo is 29 years old and his height is 6ft 1in. Messi is 27 and measures 5ft 7in. I dream of a ‘Cristiano Vs Messi’ showdown in that Maracana on 13th of July. Anyway, they are not greater than the game; football will continue to mesmerize and entertain us like no other game ever could. Are you ready to witness such extravaganza? Why not? Can’t wait to finish my 6th semester exam. I wish ‘All the Best’ to your favourite teams! Let us just wait for the moment to begin. I have a doubt that you may know this; Brazilians count only the Cup, they 24 do not accept anything that is lesser than that. Cheer up; there will be samba dances everywhere. The Brazilians will be waiting with smiles to anyone who comes to Brazil. Are you ready to witness such extravaganza? I wish ‘All the Best’ to your favourite teams! Mother’s Day: Origin and Its Meaning Florence ZN and P. Namsidinbou A ccording to Bible, everyday should be a mother’s day. The Ten Commandments teaches us to honour our mothers and fathers, (Exodus 20: 12) and repeated in Deuteronomy 5: 16. And perhaps less famously, but no less powerfully, Leviticus 19: 3 declares, “You shall each revere your mother and father. You are to keep My Sabbaths; I am the Lord your God.” It is clear from the above mentioned Ten Commandments and Laws of Holiness that God uses mothers for the establishment and maintenance of human institutions to make their descendents become the salt of the world and permeate the world with Christian idealism. Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, April-May 2014 maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. It complements similar celebrations honouring family members, such as Father’s Day and Siblings Day. The celebration of Mother’s Day began in the early 20th century; it is not related to many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, the Christian Mothering Sunday Celebration or Kamipui jiang of Liangmai. The idea of celebrating Mother’s Day in United States was first conceptualised by Ward Howe in 1870. Although she had penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic twelve years earlier, Howe had become so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War. She called on Mothers to come together and protest what she saw as the futility of their Sons killing the Sons of other Mothers. With the following, she called for an international Mother’s Day celebrating peace and motherhood. Howe proposed July 4th to be Mother’s Day, in order to dedicate the nation’s anniversary to peace. However, June 2nd was designated for the celebration; in 1873 women’s group in 18 American cities observed this new Mother’s holiday. Howe initially funded many of these celebrations, but died out once she stopped footing the bill. The story of Mother’s Day is the story of firm determination of a daughter, Anna Jarvis who resolved to pay tribute to her mother, Mrs. Anna M. Jar- vis and all other mothers of the world. Anna Jarvis dedicated her life to fulfil her mother’s dream of the recognition of day for honouring mothers. Though never became a mother herself, Founder of Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis is today recognised as the “Mother of Mothers Day”. An apt title is to define the remarkable woman’s ceaseless devotion to her mother and motherhood in general. Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day quite early in life. It so happened that one day when Anna was 12 years old, her mother Mrs. Jarvis said a class prayer in the presence of Anna. To conclude the lesson on ‘Mothers of Bible’, Mrs. Jarvis said a small prayer, “I hope that someone will found a memorial mother’s day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it”. Anna never forgot this prayer. And at her mother’s graveside service, she recalled the prayer and said, “…by the grace of God, you shall have that Mother’s Day.’” After the death of her mother in 1905, Anna resolved to honour her mother. She became more serious in her resolution when she found that adult children in the United States were negligent in their behaviour towards their parents. Besides the desire of her mother that someone would one day pay tribute to all mothers, living and dead and appreciate their contributions made her decisions even stronger. In 1907, Anna began an aggressive campaign to establish a National Mothers Day in United States. On the second 25 Kajinghiu-Karamhiu 2014 death anniversary of her mother she led a small tribute to her mother at Andrews Methodist Church. By the next year, Mother’s Day was also celebrated in her own city of Philadelphia. To give shape to her resolution, Anna along with her supporters began to write hundreds of letters to those holding the positions of power advocate the need for a national Mothers Day. Though the response was cold initially, she achieved a breakthrough by gaining the support of great merchant and philanthropist, John Wanamaker of Philadelphia. As such, in 1909, forty-five countries started observing Mother’s Day. People also wore white and red Carnations to pay tribute to their mothers, according to the tradition started by Anna. Anna chose carnations because they were her mother’s favourite flowers. White carnation was her most favourite because it represented purity of a mother’s heart. A white carnation was to be worn to honour deceased mothers and a red one to honour a living mother. By 1911, Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state of the United States and on May 8th, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. Meaning Being a mother is a very important role that the Lord chooses to give to many women. Mothers are or, were meant to be, the chief soul moulders, character constructors and God’s recruiting 26 agents for the eternal realms of heaven. As such, we consider our mothers as the sweetest gift of God. As a Christian, mothers should be ready to give their children back to God, for His use, because they are gifts of God. For Psalm 127: 3 says, “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him”. To fulfil the above arguments, several things are commanded to Christian mothers in God’s Word: • Availability—morning, noon and night (Deuteronomy 6: 6-7). • Involvement—interacting, discussing, thinking and processing life together (Ephesians 6: 4). • Teaching—the scriptures and biblical worldview (Psalm 78: 5-6; Deuteronomy 4: 10 and Ephesians 6:4). • Training—helping a child to develop skills and discover his/her strengths (Proverbs 22: 6) and spiritual gifts (Romans 12: 3-8 and 1 Cor. 12). • Discipline—teaching the fear of the Lord, drawing the line consistently, lovingly, firmly (Ephesians 6: 4; Hebrew 12: 5-11; Proverbs 13: 24; 19: 18; 22: 15; 23: 13-14; 29: 15-17). • Nurture—providing an environment of constant verbal support, freedom to fail, acceptance, affection, unconditional love (Titus, 2: 4; 2 Tim. 1: 7; Eph. 4: 29-32’\; 5: 1-2; Gal. 5: 22; 1 Peter 3: 8-9). • Modelling with Integrity—Living what you say, being a model from which a child can learn by ‘catching’ the essence of godly living (Deu. 4: 9, 15, 23; Proverbs 10: 9; 11: 3; Psalm 17: 18, 37). We celebrate Mother’s Day every year not because it was started in Unit- April-May 2014 ed States or its official announcement was made by American President Woodrow Wilson in 1914, but we do it because our mothers fulfil the God’s commandments mentioned above to make us someone special. In this regard, Zondervan (1988) argues that in Christian church, a mother holds a special place in the hearts of all, for without her none of us could be here in physical form and as an expression of the will of God to have humans made in his own image. As such, mothers are first celebrated by Adam. The Bible says, “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living” (Genesis 3: 20). It is in this verse, in fact, that the term “mother” is first mentioned. The etymology of the word Eve is derived from the Hebrew words for, to breathe, and to live. She is our breath and our life, and we celebrate her as the mother of all mankind. The observer of this day who has a living mother to honour is truly fortunate, for the opportunity still remains to him/her to speak the word of endearment, appreciation and pride which is the only thing she covets. The observer of this day who has only the memory of a mother can know the richness, beauty and comfort of it by calling back the memory and cherishing it, which fulfils the faith of the one who gave him/her life. Let Mother’s Day bring happiness where it can, and let it turn the key of loving remembrance upon the cherished days of the past where that is our only recourse, and we will have observed the day in keeping with its high and lovely purpose. A Letter Mother to I was Blessed to have a beautiful Mother like you for 29 years of my life. You are the kind of mother who lived for your children, grandchildren and whoever needed you. Your love and care are missed dearly by everyone. I awake each morning to start a new day, but the pain of losing you never goes away. I do about the things I have to do, and as the hours pass I think again of you. I want to call you and just hear your voice. Then I realised that I have no choice, for you are no more here. And now my heart cries just to see you again and to say ‘goodbye’, to say ‘MOM I love you and I always will.’ The day that you left me I just didn’t understand that you were going where I couldn’t go. And now all my memories of you are so dear, but I miss you and wish you were here; who now can hear me when I cry. It’s so hard to tell you “MOM GOOD BYE”. Someday I know all will be well and I’ll see you again with stories to tell how you were missed and how we have grown. Until then my memories of you, I’ll keep near, and I’ll pass them on to those who are dear. I MISS YOU “MOM”. I LOVE YOU “MOM”.
