Ph.D. Student Positions in Radiopharmaceutical Sciences
The recently established Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Applied Diagnostics in Vienna, Austria,
follows a new dual biomarker concept for tumor diagnosis. The focus of the institute lies on
the development of non-invasive diagnostic methods combining molecular epigenetic and
genetic signatures and molecular imaging biomarkers for PET and SPECT analysis. The
combination of these two methods will allow for improved functional, spatial and temporal
assessment of tumor load and molecular tumor characterization.
We currently have open positions with immediate start date for Ph.D. students in the area of
radiotracer development within the institute’s program line Imaging Biomarkers. Candidates
with a chemical or pharmacological background (MSc) and the desire to get involved in
application-driven and translational research are encouraged to apply. The candidate will
work in a stimulating, interdisciplinary environment (radiopharmacy, nuclear medicine,
chemistry, pharmacology and health economics) at the General Hospital of Vienna and the
Medical University Vienna.
Desired Skills and Experience
 Degree in Chemistry or Pharmacy (MSc)
 Profound knowledge in synthetic organic/inorganic chemistry and analytical
techniques (e.g. HPLC, NMR, MS)
 Experience in radiopharmaceutical sciences and/or in conducting biological assays
would be advantageous.
 Good communication skills in English and/or German.
 Motivation to work in a transdisciplinary team
The successful candidate will develop novel PET and SPECT tracers for tumor-targeting based
on radiolabelled small molecules or peptides/proteins and take part in the biological testing of
the new compounds in vitro and in vivo.
The position is available for 3 years with potential extension for up to 4 years. Salary will be
based according to rates of the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF).
