It is the last years of Nero’s reign that have characterized today’s image of the tyrant, persecutor of Christians and arsonist. This image dates as far back as the writings of ancient authors such as Tacitus and Suetonius, members of the aristocracy whose way of thinking was anathema to Nero. Current research results, however, appear to paint the emperor in a different light. Indeed, Nero was extremely Portrait of Agrippina minor popular among his subjects for much of his reign. The exhibition shows his rise as successor to the throne, his reign, his violent end and, also, why Nero’s image has been marked by negative aspects to this day. Additionally, the evaluation of his traditional portrayal and the representation of the persecutions of the Christians vividly documents the reception history surrounding Nero’s person up to the recent past. 4 Three museums in Trier, the largest Roman city north of the Alps, will focus on the controversial emperor. With altogether over 21,500 ft² and with more than 700 exhibits, the exhibitions will provide an exciting insight into Nero’s personality, his era and the tradition of his portrayal.
