The Symposium is sponsored by the “Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung
und Kunst Baden-Württemberg”, aus Mitteln des “Innovationsfonds Kunst 2015”.
Activist art provides indispensable contributions to social movements, political networks and the art
world. The symposium “From Social Sculpture to Art Related Action” is an effort to understand the
boom and the development of socially engaged art and activism. It will examine what has changed
since Joseph Beuys developed his concept of the “Social Sculpture” in the 1970s and how this idea has
been discussed and developed in an international discourse. During the symposium, renowned experts
will contextualize these historical developments and discuss them from a contemporary perspective.
Künstlerischer Aktivismus ist aus sozialen Bewegungen, politischen Netzwerken und dem Kunstfeld
kaum mehr wegzudenken. Das Symposium „From Social Sculpture to Art Related Action“ befasst sich
mit der Geschichte sozial engagierter Kunst. Es fragt danach, was sich seit der Entwicklung des Begriffs
der „Sozialen Plastik“ von Joseph Beuys in den 1970er Jahren gewandelt hat und wie das Konzept im
internationalen Kontext diskutiert und weiterentwickelt wurde. Renommierte Repräsentanten und Kenner
sozial engagierter Kunst aus Europa und Amerika werden diese Ansätze aus heutiger Sicht beleuchten.
