On the occasion of their first show in Japan artists Noushin Redjaian and Jakob Neulinger
conceived a walkable installation at the Austrian Cultural Forum Tokyo reflecting their
two-month residence in Japan.
Their installation will be supported with an music scenery by Soap&Skin (no concert).
The code of etiquette seems the be-all and end-all in Nippon – Land of the Rising Sun.
Bowing, bathing, speaking, eating, drinking and sleeping, all comes in a package of
traditions and rules based on inside information. A clear distinction between groups is as
well directly reflected in the Japanese language (uchi, 内, inside/home & soto, 外, outside)
as it is a fundamental part of Japanese social customs. From an outsider‘s perspective
there is a lot of what you can do wrong but also some things that you might get right despite
some bits and pieces lost in translation.
Noushin Redjaian and Jakob Neulinger are currently Artists-in-Residence in Arakawa, Tokyo
on invitation and supported by The Arts and Culture Division of the
Federal Chancellery of Austria.

この2か月の東京滞在の経験を反映したインスタレーションを制作、発表します。二人は現在、
オーストリア連邦政府の奨学金により、東京・荒川区に居住しています。音楽風景 Soap&Skin 。
日のいずる国ニッポンでは、礼儀作法が肝要のようです。挨拶、入浴、会話、飲食から睡眠に至るま
で、すべてが伝統というパッケージに、中身の情報に基づいたルールといっしょに詰め込まれていま
す。「うち」と「そと」という日本語にはっきり表れているように、グループ同士の明らかな違いは、
日本の社会的な慣習の根本をなしています。よそ者の眼から見ると、間違ったことをしでかしてしまい
そうな場面がたくさんある一方で、理解できないながらも、きちんとできそうなこともあるのです。
