This is an introductory course in Political Science. This course will introduce
you to three topics: (1) the major themes of Political Science (e.g., the origins
of modern state, social movements, and democratization); (2) the major concepts
used in Political Science (e.g., collective action problems and principal-agent
relations); and (3) the methodologies political scientists use to evaluate rival
theories.

Course Description
The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the analytical
tools needed to study politics cross-nationally, as well as acquaint them with
the political arrangements of various regions of the world.

Objectives
This course is based on lectures and class discussion. Class discussion is your
opportunity to raise questions about the lecture or the readings, to bounce ideas
off one another, and to think carefully about the texts' relation to issues
raised in lecture.

Method of Instruction
Students are expected to attend all lectures, to complete all of the reading on a
timely basis, and to be prepared to summarize and discuss them in class.

Class Preparation
Rod Hague and Martin Harrop, Political Science: A Comparative Introduction, 7th
ed. (Palgrave, 2013). In addition, we will be reading journal articles and book
chapters. All of these items will be made available online in PDF format.
