A study on Bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)-magnesium Electrolyte - New Electrolyte Class for Magnesium Batteries Rainer Schwarz, Marijana Pejic, Mario Wachtler ZSW - Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg Helmholtzstr. 8, 89081 Ulm - Germany Corresponding author: [email protected] Today’s energy storage technology is continuously challenged by technological progress and future demands in efficiency, capacity, availability and price. At the moment, multiple advanced alternatives, like sodium or magnesium based systems are undergoing intense research efforts. To the future demands, the energy dense, 2205 mAh.g-1, abundant and cheap magnesium is an excellent answer. This promising alternative is still in the research stage and faces major roadblocks until its commercialization. At the current state of research, the highly favoured, magnesium metal anode is only compatible with either magnesium-organo-borate or magnesium-organo-aluminate electrolytes. It seems that conventional electrolyte solvents and most magnesium salts form a passivating, magnesium ion impermeable, surface layer during electrochemical cycling. [1- 4] Here we present a completely new class of electrolytes for magnesium batteries, based on bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)-magnesium. The electrolyte is highly suitable for a metallic magnesium anode. We present a complete electrolyte characterisation electrochemical testing, SEM, XRD, IR and NMR investigations. References [1] D. Aurbach, Z. Lu, A. Schechter, Y. Gofer, H. Gizbar, R. Turgeman, Y.
