Refer to “Evidence for Oscillation of Atmospheric Neutrinos”, Physical Review Letters, 81, 1562 (1998). Question 2 (a) Derive the survival probability formula P( ν α → ν α ) in vacuum assuming two-flavor neutrino oscillations. Use a mixing angle θ , mass squared difference Δm2=m22—m21, neutrino energy E, its travel length L, and the natural unit c = h/(2π) = 1. Section B: Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astrophysics (Yoshikoshi) Question 1 Ø Explain the observation principle and method of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes detecting atmospheric Cherenkov light. In particular, describe on the major background events in gamma-ray observations and the technique to reject them. Describe in one page of the answer sheet, using numerical values concretely. Question 2 Ø In the case that gamma rays were detected from a celestial source, describe on the method to discriminate if they are of leptonic or hadronic origin.
