Honne • It is not something one is encouraged to show in public, especially during business dealings. • It is something a Japanese shows only to his closest friends (or sometimes when very drunk). Tatemae • Literally "façade," is the behavior and opinions one displays in public. • Tatemae is what is expected by society and required according to one's position and circumstances. Tatemae • They may have a specific role due to their social status or position in the specific group (such as corporation or company). • They behave as they are expected to behave in the specific situation, regardless of their personal opinions about the matter. Tatemae • Tatemae is the “face” that a Japanese person shows in public. • Core of tatemae is politeness to avoid confrontation that may or may not match one's honne. Tatemae • Tatemae is displayed when the words and the true intentions of somebody don’t really match completely. • To the westerner, this may sound dishonest. 飲み会 • Nomikai, where work colleagues gather to chat, eat and drink in an ikazaya (traditional Japanese bar). • On those occasions you are supposed to show your Honne, talk about your work problems, family problems, etc; so that your colleagues can help you and give their advice. 飲み会 • Nomikai are also the moment to complain about your boss or about the asshole of some other department. • Let’s say that alcohol plays an important role when evolving from your Tatemae to your Honne mode. Kesimpulan • In Japan, it is very important to maintain harmony, thus most of the time the true feelings and thoughts (Honne) are usually not expressed in a direct way in order to not hurt the feelings of others. • We could say that the Tatemae is used as a lubricant in the relations between people.
