Phonics
• Daily, discrete Phonics sessions.
• It is the approach we use to teach
reading and spelling.
• Initially, the children are taught the
sounds before the letter names.
2
Phonics
• Phonics is split up into ‘Phases’. Children
have been working through these
phases since September.
• The first three Phases work through
the initial sounds.

Phase 2 (6 weeks)
• Letters are introduced to the children.
• They are introduced in the following
order:
- Set 1: s,a,t,p

- Set 3: g, o, c, k
- Set 4: ck, e, u, r
- Set 5: h, b, f,ff, l,ll, ss

Phase 3 (10 weeks)
• Another set of letters are introduced
to the children.

• When the children get to Phase 3, they
are introduce to digraphs.

• The children in Reception are currently
working through this stage.

How can I help my child
at home?
• Segmenting – breaking up a word into
pure sounds
• C-a-t
• Blending – putting the pure sounds back
together to make a word
• C-a-t becomes cat

• You may hear your child refer to the
following:
• Digraph – two letters, one sound. For
example, ‘sh’ or ‘er’.
• Sound hands – Using your hands to help
sound out the word.

• This term, Reception and Year 1 are
going to have Phonics homework.
