Three major obstacles to world peace are conflict over natural resources, the uneven distribution of wealth, and the mass media. Many countries whose economies depend on natural resources, such as minerals, are conflict-ridden. Income from these resources is often pocketed by corrupt politicians, which creates discontent and leads to instability in society. Consequently, resource-rich areas are seized by rebel groups, who use the profits to fund bloody military campaigns that lead to civil wars. Wealth inequality is another obstacle to world peace. The vast majority of the world's wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few. This creates economic crises and breeds fundamentalist values in the public, and some individuals join terrorist organizations. The desperate economic situation of these people makes them feel they have nothing to lose, and they commit acts of violence. Finally, the mass media makes peace unachievable. By focusing inordinately on violence and war, it desensitizes the public to conflict and also solidifies the idea that global conflict is inevitable. The media also presents small extremist groups as representing entire nations or religions, creating false conceptions that breed hostility. A path to world peace could only be forged if the abovementioned issues were to be successfully tackled. Unfortunately, conflict in resource-rich areas, uneven wealth distribution, and the power of the mass media are too entrenched for change to be foreseeable.
