SOLOGESANG DEN FACETTENREICHEN SOUNDS DER WDR BIG BAND.

In seiner Autobiografie bezeichnet Duke Elling­
ton sein dreiteiliges Spätwerk, das er unter
»Sacred Concerts« zusammengefasst hat, als
sein »wichtigstes Werk«. Und das will etwas
heißen, schließlich zählt der »Duke« zu den
einflussreichsten Jazzmusikern überhaupt. Sein
Œuvre umfasst rund 2.000 Kompositionen,
nicht wenige davon wurden zu Jazzstandards.
Auch als Pianist und nicht zuletzt als Band­
leader war er über Jahrzehnte überaus erfolg­
reich. Sein »Sacred Concert«, das heute Abend
auszugsweise dargeboten wird, möchte Elling­
ton aber nicht als verjazzte Messe verstanden
wissen, sondern als geistliches Werk, in dem
er sein persönliches Verständnis von Glauben
zum Ausdruck bringt: »Ich tat es nicht, um
meiner Karriere einen neuen Aspekt hinzu­
zufügen, sondern mit wachsender Einsicht
in meine Berufung und mit der Ermutigung
vieler Geistlicher«. Für Ellington war dieses
Spätwerk aber auch ein Sinnbild für die Kom­
munikation, die für ihn ein zentraler Begriff
im Zusammenleben der Menschen war. Das
»Sacred Concert« ist ein schönes Beispiel für
ein gelungenes Miteinander, denn ein derar­
tiges Großprojekt kann nur funktionieren,
wenn alle beteiligten Musikerinnen und
­Musiker an einem Strang ziehen.
In dieser Disziplin der Gemeinschaftsarbeit
sind der WDR Rundfunkchor und die WDR
Big Band bestens geübt. Es ist eine schöne
Tradition, dass die beiden Klangkörper ge­
meinsam auf der Bühne stehen und dadurch
Repertoire und Horizont erweitern.
Dass es zu diesem Serenaden-Konzert kom­
men konnte, geht auf einen lauen Sommer­
abend vor zwei Jahren zurück. Während eines
Sommerfestes kamen Carola Anhalt, die
­Managerin des WDR Rundfunkchores und
Richard DeRosa, der Chefdirigent der WDR
Big Band ins Gespräch. Und da DeRosa nicht
nur ein Fachmann für Jazz ist, sondern auch
ein Faible für die Vokalmusik hat, war im Nu
die Idee geboren, Chor und Big Band erneut
zusammenzuführen. Auch bei Stefan Parkman,
dem Chefdirigenten des Chores, musste kei­
nerlei Überzeugungsarbeit geleistet werden.
Also machte man sich ans Werk, um ein an­
sprechendes und zugleich anspruchsvolles
Programm zu kreieren.
Das Wesen der Serenade im Sinne einer
­»gemischten abendlichen Musik mit unter­
haltsamem Charakter« wird in diesem Pro­
gramm besonders betont. Abwechslung und
Vielfalt sind dabei die Stichpunkte. Denn kein
Instrument ist mit den schier endlosen klang­
lichen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten der mensch­
lichen Stimme vergleichbar. Und mehr noch:
keine Stimme gleicht der anderen. Das macht
die eigentliche Faszination am Gesang aus.
Die Stimme, das ursprünglichste »Musik­
instrument« überhaupt, ist damit ein ideales
­Vehikel nicht nur als Übermittler von Texten
und Textbotschaften, sondern transportiert
auch Gemütszustände und Emotionen der
Sängerinnen und Sänger.
Die Werke in großer Besetzung bilden einen
Schwerpunkt des Abends. Zu Ellingtons
»Sacred Concert« gesellt sich noch ein Werk,
das speziell für diesen Anlass bei Richard
­DeRosa in Auftrag gegeben wurde und heute
Abend uraufgeführt wird: In der Komposition
»Beloved – Song Of Songs« setzt er sich mu­
sikalisch mit dem alttestamentarischen Hohe­
lied Salomos, jener Sammlung von Liebeslie­
dern, auseinander. Cécile Verny huldigt mit
dem Klassiker »Lover Man« im Zusammen­
spiel mit der WDR Big Band eine der größten
und charakterstärksten Jazzsängerinnen über­
haupt: Billie Holiday.
Den anderen Schwerpunkt liefern die
A ­Cappella-Stücke: so hat auch der Schwede
Nils Lindberg einige Songs für den WDR
Rundfunkchor maßangefertigt. Ebenfalls aus
Schweden kommen die beiden Komponisten
Robert Sund und Sven-David Sandström,
auch letzterer hat sich mit dem biblischen
Hohelied auseinandergesetzt.
Eine Reminiszenz an die Zeit der Renaissance
ist das Stück »Draw On, Sweet Night«: es
stammt vom Briten John Wilbye (1574 – 1638).
Komplettiert wird diese Serenade durch
zwei zeitgenössische Komponisten aus dem
englischsprachigen Raum: von Eric Whitacre
stammt das Chorstück »Water Night«, das
Spiritual »Deep River« wurde von Norman
Luboff bearbeitet.
