Mainstreaming Sustainable
Development
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development was adopted at the
UN General Assembly last September. SDSN Japan has launched
its activities to contribute to implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are the
core element of the 2030 Agenda.
As the G7 Summit and its relevant Ministerial Meetings
will be hosted by the Government of Japan this year,
SDSN Japan has produced policy recommendations to
be reflected in these high-level political debates, which
call for the leaders of G7 member countries to play a
leading role in achieving the SDGs.
The recommendations will cover a wide range of
policy areas, including governance for the SDGs, multistakeholder engagement, climate change, sustainable
consumption & production, biodiversity, international
development, and education. These recommendations
will be shared not only with the senior policymakers
and advisors of the relevant agencies of the Government
of Japan, but also with other SDSN members through the
global SDSN network, in order to ensure a global approach.

The mainstreaming of sustainable development has
been discussed for many years by the international
community. However it has not yet been realized, and
there is still much work to be done to fully incorporate
sustainable development into national policies and the
corporate strategies of businesses. Since the SDGs —
unlike the MDGs — are universal goals to be tackled
by all countries, the developed countries are in the
best position to take the lead in formulating their
policies to achieve the SDGs. This is the same policy
direction as mainstreaming sustainable development
into national policies and strategies of enterprises.
SDSN Japan is seeking to secure a mechanism for
mainstreaming sustainable development in public and
private policymaking. I would like to emphasize that
it is crucial for all stakeholders to implement concrete
actions toward achieving the SDGs, which will pave
the way for leaders in the public and private sectors to
make their own active commitments.
SDSN Japan will continue to commit itself to realizing the
mainstreaming of sustainable development, with your kind
and strong support. We are very much looking forward to
working closely with you all on this crucial task.
SDSN Symposium and Workshop took place in Malaysia
The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)
and the UN University Institute for the Advanced Study of
Sustainability (UNU-IAS) jointly organized the symposium
and workshop “On the Road to 2030 – Global and National
Perspectives on Implementation of the SDGs” on 29 February
and 1 March 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Supporting
partners included: the Malaysian Industry Government Group
for High Technology (MIGHT); the Office of the Science
Advisor; the Institute of Strategic and International Studies
(ISIS); Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and LESTARI;
the Keio Research Institute. Prof. Norichika Kanie, Council
member of SDSN Japan, attended as the panelist/moderator.
In this event, participants
from Japan, Malaysia,
Indonesia, Cambodia,
Germany and Australia
discussed a number of
crucial issues for implementation of the SDGs.

持続可能な開発の主流化を目指して

昨年9月国連総会において｢持続可

マレーシアにてSDGs実施にかかわる
シンポジウムおよびワークショップが開催されました
2016年2月29日−3月1日、
マレーシアのクアラルンプールにて、
SDGsの実施
に向けた国際的／各国における展望についてのシンポジウムおよびワーク
ショップ
「On the Road to 2030 – Global and National Perspectives on

が開催されました。
本イベントは、
SDSN (Sustainable Development Solutions Network) 、
国
連大学サステイナビリティ高等研究所
（UNU-IAS）
、
ハイテクのためのマレー
シア産業政府グループ

マレーシア戦略国際問題研究所
（ISIS）
、
マレーシア国民大学

および慶應義塾大
学が開催したもので、
