The Young Concertmaster
Alberto Menchen is new 1st concertmaster of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.
The 25-year-old beat out hundreds of competitors. Tonight he has a first major
appearance. He wants to stay most of all. By Arne Lieb
Tonight explore the Düsseldorf Symphony "epochal borders" from. They play music
that has emerged around the great upheaval of the First World War. The concert will
be one of the first important performances for the new 1st concertmaster Alberto
Menchen. The young Spanish violinist had prevailed in December against hundreds
competitor - now it is initially for one year section leader of the first violins and right
hand of the conductor.
Menchen, 25 years, is a quiet, thoughtful interlocutor. For just over a year, he has
lived in Germany, only in Hamburg, now in Dusseldorf, and now speaks fluent
German. If he does not know a word, he proposes it to his iPhone: "enriquecedor" is
working with the Düsseldorf Symphony, he says - "enriching" translated the phone.
"It's always been my dream to be concertmaster in such orchestras."
The strings in the view
As 1st concertmaster takes Menchen at the Symphony Violin Solos, but must also
know the scores and keep the other strings in the view. The concertmaster is a
special position in the orchestra: He stands between conductor and musicians and
decides with many details. "One has to be very diplomatic," says Alberto Menchen.
In today's program, especially the music of Alexander Zemlinsky was a challenge. It is
very difficult for the strings, stay together and work out the important voices. But the
composition is the work value: Menchen is enthusiastic about the expressive, big
sound of the "mermaid". "The piece touched," he says.
25 Years - Alberto Menchen seems young to fill a senior position in an orchestra. But
he is not the first so young concertmaster with the Düsseldorf Symphony: Franziska
breakfast was the same age when they first concertmaster in 1996. A look at
Menchens Vita also shows that the violinist despite his young age is anything but a
beginner is.

of Music and Drama in 2009. He joined many concerts, among others, the Mahler
Youth Orchestra, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Paris, and as a soloist with the
Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. He also played with a chamber music quartet itself
founded on festivals. In Hamburg he received the prize worth EUR 15 000 Berenberg
Culture Prize recently.
Menchen has many plans. "I want to do everything, and the good as possible," he
says. He wanted to play in the orchestra and in chamber music, teaching and remain
concertmaster. Whether his future lies in Dusseldorf, decides re foreplay in a year such pressure is in the everyday life of a musician. It was important, while remaining
natural. "One has to be, how to be," says Alberto Menchen. "If you try to change his
personality, you will be unhappy."
