School of Analytical Sciences Adlershof Lecture On Biomineralization: structure-function relations and mechanisms of formation of some incredibly sophisticated biogenic materials Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Lia Addadi Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel Biomineralization studies the processes through which organisms produce minerals and organic crystals to harden or stiffen their soft tissues, for protection, mastication, navigation or light manipulation. Biomineralization is a potentially endless source of unconventional ideas for building composite materials with control at the nano-meter level. The level of sophistication in the design and construction of the materials at all hierarchical levels, from Ångstroms to millimeters, is unparalleled by any man-made material. Much can therefore be learnt from studying biominerals, because the biological processes, the strategies used and the solutions evolved by organisms are often completely unexpected. Date: 11:00am, Friday 26th February 2016 Location: Room 0‘119, Erwin-Schrödinger-Zentrum, Rudower Chaussee 26 12489 Berlin-Adlershof All guests are warmly invited to attend! www.analytical-sciences.de www.analytical-sciences.de Humboldt-Universität Humboldt-Universität zu zu Berlin Berlin ● ● School School of of Analytical Analytical Sciences Sciences Adlershof Adlershof Unter Unter den den Linden Linden 6, 6, DE-10099 DE-10099 Berlin Berlin Financed by by thethe Excellence Initiative Financed Excellence Initiative
