In 2014, the German debate over the outbreak of the First
World War flared up once more. At its core were divergent
views on the degree of Germany's responsibility for causing
the conflict. This lecture revisits that anniversary debate. It
reflects on the international setting and asks what was at stake
in the polemical exchanges generated by the issue.
Sir Christopher Clark is the twenty-second Regius Professor
of History at the University of Cambridge. In 2015 he was
knighted for his services to Anglo-German relations.
