„Am I an actionist? Yes, I sold art in the sleeping room“.
In fictitious portraits group holders, bank managers, models or sculpturists tell about their work,
about society and their womanhood, or, to put it another way: about the art of being a woman in
these times.
Intense tableaus and painted narrations around the subject femininity mark Billi Thanner‘s artistic
works.
On the face of it they appear to be anachronistic advertisments and a tribute to the archetypes of a
commercialised world, showing modern house-wives confidently presenting their new kitchenware.
But concealed by the facade of aesthetic commercials for everyday objects and half naked pin-up
girls, Billi Thanner´s subversive comment, irony and airiness are to be found.
My Life My Way – not only a slogan tattooed to her arm. Her self-perception is reflected in her
picture subjects.
As a different form of reverse glass painting, the artist presents photo-realistic and unconventional
motives on flexible film, using her particular technique of painting.
Billi Thanner is among the protagonists of neo-actionism or inter-actionism, a new generation of
contemporary actionism. It´s special attraction lies in the freedom, to be in control of one´s own
actions as an artist, to cross borders without being arrested or institutionalized.
„I´m tempted by the freedom to decide as an artist: I´ll go through with it. I won´t get arrested for
it, it will be defined as art. In no other profession you can find this kind of freedom.“
Presence and tradition of the Viennese Actionism are mixing with Billi Thanner‘s humour.
In the process the interaction with the audience is an essential component.

NO AIR - NO ART
In today´s megacities you can get practically anything, but only little fresh air. With the critical art
project No Air – No Art, which was first shown in 2014 at the MoCA Museum of Contemporary Art in
Beijing and will be presented in 2015 in Shanghai, Billi Thanner calls attention to the urgent
worldwide smog-problem. To spread this message, she established the platform „Billi Thanner´s Art
Army“.
Billi Thanner was born in 1972 and lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Her artworks are
internationally present – for instance in Antwerp, Maastricht, Moscow, Basel, Cologne or Paris.

„Bin ich Aktionistin? Ja, ich habe Kunst im Schlafzimmer verkauft.“
Konzernbesitzerinnen, Bankdirektorinnen, Models oder Skulpturistinnen erzählen in fiktiven Porträts
von ihrer Arbeit, der Gesellschaft und ihrem Frausein oder anders formuliert: von der Kunst der
Frauen in der Moderne. Starke Frauentableaus und gemalte Erzählflächen rund um das Thema
Weiblichkeit bestimmen das künstlerische Werk von Billi Thanner. Auf den ersten Blick muten sie wie
anachronistische Werbereklamen und eine Verneigung vor den Archetypen der Konsumwelt an, als
die moderne Hausfrau noch selbstbewusst neue Küchenhelfer präsentierte. Doch hinter den
halbnackten Pinup-Girls und der Ästhetik kommerzieller Werbebanner für Alltagsgegenstände
verbirgt sich Billi Thanners subversiver Kommentar, ihre Ironie und vor allem die Leichtigkeit in
ihrem Selbstverständnis als aktionistische Künstlerin. My Life My Way – skandiert nicht nur eine
Tätowierung auf dem Oberarm der Künstlerin, sondern auch ihre Bildsujets reflektieren dies als
Abbild ihrer selbst. Als andere Form der Hinterglasmalerei zeigt die Künstlerin dazu fotorealistische,
aber unkonventionelle Motive in der für sie spezifischen Maltechnik auf technischer Weichfolie.
Billi Thanner zählt sich zu den ProtagonistInnen einer neuen Generation des zeitgenössischen,
zeitgemäßen Aktionismus, dem Neo-Aktionismus oder Inter-Aktionismus. Der Reiz liegt dabei in der
Freiheit, als Künstlerin über das eigene aktive Handeln verfügen zu können, etwas über die Grenzen
hinaus tun zu können, ohne dafür eingewiesen oder verhaftet zu werden. „Mich reizt die Freiheit im
Aktionismus, als Künstlerin zu entscheiden: ich ziehe das durch. Du wirst dafür nicht eingesperrt,
sondern es wird zur Kunst erklärt. In keinem Beruf findest du diese Form von Freiheit.“
Dabei mischt sich die Präsenz und Tradition des Wiener Aktionismus mit Billi Thanners Humor, der
ebenfalls traditionsreich noch weiter östlich verankert ist. Die Interaktion mit dem Publikum ist dabei
wesentlicher Bestandteil. „Als Künstler muss man nicht erst sterben, um Geld zu verdienen.“
NO AIR - NO ART
In den Millionenstädten dieser Welt gibt es so gut wie alles, nur leider sehr wenig frische Luft. Mit
dem Kunstprojekt No Air - No Art, das als umweltkritische Installation erstmals 2014 im MoCA
Museum of Contemporary Art in Peking gezeigt wurde und Ende 2015 in Shanghai zu sehen sein
wird, macht Billi Thanner auf das akute weltweite Smog-Problem aufmerksam. Eine Botschaft, die
sie in möglichst viele Metropolen tragen möchte, dazu dient ihr auch ihre Aktionsplattform Billi
Thanner’s Art Army.
Geboren 1972 in lebt und arbeitet die Künstlerin in Wien, Österreich. Mit ihren Arbeiten ist sie
international vertreten – etwa in Antwerpen, Maastricht und Moskau, wie auch auf Messen in Basel,
Köln und Paris.
