The seminar focuses on Berlin in the years 1920s and 1930s. It deals with the cultural practices, in
particular the art of taking a walk (strolling), the culture of salaried masses and the consumer culture,
and analyses cultural practices by reading literature and film. To learn about the intersection of literature
and practices, e.g. concerning reading the street like a book, the seminar takes place in university (inclass course), studying texts in close reading, and study trips in the town (field trips).
The in-class courses will be in room 323 (Hausvogteiplatz 5-7), friday 10 c.t. to 12 c.t.
(c.t. stands for cum tempore (with time) meaning the class starts at 10.15 h; s.t. stands for sine tempore (without
time)
This is a bilingual seminar, so that the language in class will be English and German. But we will try to
speak as much German in class as we can, to improve the German language skills. English will be
Lingua franca.
The texts will be, if possible, in German and English. The guided tour to Siemensstadt will be in English,
the short presentations and essays will be in English or German.

All the readings are available via Moodle. Please prepare the course readings in advance of each
session.
Course requirements (5 ECTS Points)
i. Active participation in class discussions and field trips, punctuality. (10% of final class valuation)
ii. Doing the readings in advance of the respective classes as assigned below and preparing two
discussion questions on each reading. I collect these questions in class. (20% of final class valuation)
iii. Participation in a short student presentation in class or on a field site/topic relevant to the course.
Choice of topic should be checked with the instructor in advance at the first session. (20% of final class
valuation)
iv. Two short written assignments. One of them should be relevant concerning your short presentation:
 First essay on a topic relevant to the course (2-3 pages) to be submitted in class and to me by
e-mail. (10% of final class valuation)
 Second essay on a topic relevant to the course (2-3 pages) to be submitted in class and to me
by e-mail. (40% of final class valuation) (Written work can be submitted in English or German)
v. Attendance Policy: You may not miss more than 2 sessions. If you do know you have to miss a
class, let me know in advance and we can arrange a make-up task, if necessary. In the case of
illness or other unforeseen situations, do e-mail me as soon as possible. I would also require some
written confirmation of the emergency. Do become familiar with public transport in Berlin and work out in
advance how to get to the sites. Transportation difficulties are not an excuse for an absence. It is the
students’ responsibility to get to the sites on time.
vi. Plagiarism Policy: The presentation of another person’s words, thoughts, ideas, judgements, images
or data as though they were your own, whether intentionally or unintentionally, constitutes an act of
plagiarism. The penalty for this is failure of the course.
