Department for Environment and Heritage Innes National Park Bird List Innes National Park is home to a diverse range of native and introduced birds, with 140 species in total. They thrive off the diverse range of habitat types, which provide refuge sites on the Lower Yorke Peninsula. Many of these species are of conservation significance, being listed as rare, endangered or vulnerable. One species in particular is the Western Whipbird (Psophodes nigrogularis), which has played a significant role in the history of the park. The rediscovery of the Western Whipbird in 1962 resulted in Innes being dedicated as a National Park in 1970, to protect the bird’s habitat. A number of Field Guides are available to assist birdwatchers in South Australia. Use the detailed descriptions and illustrations in your field guide to identify species and confirm your sightings. Take a pair of binoculars and your patience for best results. Please remain on designated trails at all times for your own safety and to protect valuable habitat. The following annotated list of birds recorded from Innes National Park was compiled by Kent Treloar, Birds Australia Atlas Regional Organiser of the Yorke Peninsula, from confirmed sightings since 1998. They are listed in order of The New Atlas of Australian Birds 1998 to 2002 (Geoff Barrett, Andrew Silcocks, Simon Barry, Ross Cunningham, Rory Poulter, 2003).
