Amateur Dentist: Auf ihrer zweiten PIROUET-CD
schaffen es der niederländische Bassklarinettist Joris
Roelofs und seine Trio-Partner Matt Penman (Bass)
und Ted Poor (Schlagzeug) wieder, mit Klängen voller
schillernder Farben zu überraschen.
Noch aufregender loten sie die Möglichkeiten der
seltenen Besetzung aus – und entführen in ebenso
zärtliche wie aufwühlende Soundwelten.
Musik, die Spaß macht und fesselt!

it seinen tiefen Tönen hinterließ er Spuren. Viel Jubel
gab es zum PIROUET-Debüt des Bassklarinettisten
Joris Roelofs, Aliens Deliberating, im Frühjahr 2014.
„Die faszinierende Magie der Bassklarinette“ entdeckte
der Kritiker der Zeitschrift Jazz’n’More in dem Album,
„schlicht ein kleines Meisterwerk“, konstatierte das Magazin RONDO, ein Musizieren mit „Strahlkraft“ und „Dringlichkeit“, zugleich auch „schmeichelnd mit vollem Ton“, lobte
das Fono Forum. Und besonders prägnant fasste all dies
das Jazzpodium zusammen – mit der Feststellung: „Hier
reift ein Neuer, vielleicht bald schon ganz Großer“, einer,
der in bestimmten Stücken swinge „wie der Bassklarinettenteufel“. Hier nun legt der Niederländer Joris Roelofs seine zweite CD bei PIROUET vor. Sie trägt wieder einen sehr
schillernden, gewitzten Titel: Amateur Dentist — der später
hier auch erläutert wird. Und sie enthält Musik, die mit
noch größerer Klangvielfalt als die Vorgänger-CD verblüfft:
Funkelnde, irisierende und intensitätsgeladene Ausdruckskraft und Farbenpracht mit einer Besetzung, die fast spartanisch wirkt: Bassklarinette, Kontrabass und Schlagzeug.
Ganz schnell wird beim Hören deutlich, was für ein meisterhaftes Ensemble Roelofs und seine beiden Partner Matt
Penman (Bass) und Ted Poor (Drums) sind.

Sie können Stück für Stück überraschen, mit unerwarteten
Klangfacetten faszinieren. Und sie werden Fans eines
straight swingenden Jazz genauso fesseln wie Liebhaber
ganz zarter Jazz-Kammermusik, die manchmal auch auf
Vorlagen aus der E-Musik zurückgreift. Und nicht zuletzt ist
dies eine Musik, bei der ganz stark die Lust spürbar ist, die
die drei Musiker antreibt. Und zwar nicht nur Forscherlust,
sondern erst recht Spiellust. Und die Lust am Auskosten
von Klang.
Die war bei dem 1984 geborenen Joris Roelofs ausschlaggebend dafür, dass er sich seit 2010 ganz für die Bassklarinette entschied. Der Musiker, der 2007 am Amsterdamer
Konservatorium seinen Master machte, war zunächst als
Altsaxophonist und Klarinettist bekannt, gewann zu dieser
Zeit auch schon angesehene Preise, wie den Pim Jacobs
Preis und in den USA den Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award. Als Mitglied des Vienna Art Orchestra (2005 bis
2010) musste er in bestimmten Stücken auch Bassklarinette spielen – und war so fasziniert, dass er schließlich bei
diesem Instrument blieb – mit einer „neuen Liebe“ verglich
er das einmal. Eine Liebe, die ganz offenbar noch immer
heftig lodert. Seine beiden Partner sind – wie Roelofs

selbst — Musiker von ganz großem Format und hoher Flexibilität. Der 1974 in Neuseeland geborene Matt Penman
zählt zu den besonders gefragten Bassisten in New York.
Mit Musikern wie Kenny Werner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Guillermo Klein und Nils Wogram hat er
gespielt. Sein Spiel lebt von einer ganz eigenen Mischung
aus Kraft, Geschmeidigkeit und musikalischer Vielseitigkeit. Ted Poor, 1981 in den USA geboren, hat sich seit den
frühen 2000er Jahren einen Namen gemacht, mit Gitarrist
Ben Monder und Trompeter Ralph Alessi das interaktive
Trio Third Wheel gegründet, mit Musikern wie Chris Potter,
Bill Frisell, Marc Ducret und Maria Schneider gespielt: ein
Kommunikations-Meister an Trommeln und Becken.
Ein besonderer Reiz entsteht dadurch, dass hier in einer
Besetzung ohne Harmonie-Instrument wie Klavier und Gitarre zwei tiefe Melodie-Instrumente in Dialoge treten und
ihren ganzen Tonvorrat nutzen müssen, um alle klanglichen
Bereiche abzudecken. Roelofs sagt: „Wir haben die Rollenverteilung noch weiter ausgebaut. Bass und Bassklarinette
verzahnen sich noch mehr im Wechsel von Solo und Begleitung. Ich habe auch versucht, ein paar klassische Stücke
(von Alexander Skrjabin und Guillaume de Machaut) zu
arrangieren und wieder ein Ellington-Stück aufgegfriffen
(Such Sweet Thunder), wobei ich so viel wie möglich die
Klangmöglichkeiten, die Dynamik und die rhythmische
Flexibilität dieses Trios verwende.“
Dieses Trio ist ein Wunder des Wandelbaren. „Riesige dynamische Unterschiede“ könne er mit Partnern wie Matt
Penman und Ted Poor realisieren. Hier entsteht eine ganz
intensive – und nicht zuletzt intime — Kommunikation.
Schönheit mit System. Wie auch bei Aliens Deliberating,
gibt es auch für die Stücke auf Amateur Dentist spannende
Hintergründe. Roelofs formuliert sie selber so: „Das erste

sprach Zarathustra, wo sowohl der Adler (Stolz, Macht,
Kraft) und die Schlange (Weisheit, Intellekt) eine wichtige
Rolle spielen. Pseudo Bebop ist ein kurzes Interlude, und es
heißt so, weil es Fake-Bebop ist; es hört sich vage an wie
Bebop, aber die Time stimmt nicht, und die Töne sind nur
Obertöne. Para Poli heißt ,zu viel‘ auf Griechisch. Ich war
jetzt oft auf Kreta, und bestimmte Wörter haben mir speziell gefallen. Auch hat das Stück ganz viele Akkorde – fast zu
viele. Amateur Dentist ist wieder ein Interlude. Ich mag es,
die Phantasie spielen zu lassen und absurde Sachen in der
Musik darzustellen. Wenn uns das gelungen ist, was wir
vorhatten, hört man, wie ein Zahnarzt fieberhaft bohrt und
schleift und rüttelt. Dieser Titel hat mir am besten gefallen

als Album-Titel: Einerseits ist es etwas, das keiner erwartet, andererseits weckt es konkrete Bilder und Vorstellungen. Ich wollte damit übrigens keineswegs Zahnärzte beleidigen, eher schon: mich ernsthaft in das hineinversetzen,
was sie tun. Samurai Curtain kommt eigentlich von dem
holländischen Wort ,Samenreiskorting‘, das man von der
holländischen Bahn kennt und das ganz wörtlich übersetzt
,Zusammenreise-Ermäßigung‘ heißt, also einen günstigen
Gruppentarif meint. Nachdem eine Schaffnerin Ted und
Matt auf Holländisch vorgeworfen hatte, dass sie keinen
,Samenreiskorting‘ gelöst hatten und die beiden natürlich
kein Wort verstanden, habe ich mich gefragt, welcher
englische Ausdruck am meisten diesem merkwürdigen

holländischen gleicht. Da kam ich auf Samurai Curtain. Vielleicht können darüber aber nur Holländer lachen.“
Faszinierend wie diese Geschichten und Gedanken sind die
Töne. Es hat durchweg auch etwas Augenzwinkerndes,
wenn etwa in Duke Ellingtons Such Sweet Thunder der
gestrichene Bass die Melodiestimme übernimmt und darunter die Bassklarinette die rhythmisch wiederkehrende
Begleitfigur spielt — die dann natürlich zwischen den Instrumenten hin und her wandern wird. Ganz andere Welt,
wenn dasselbe Trio auf dieser CD die zugleich lyrische und
spannungsgeladene Kantilene aus der Klaviersonate Nr. 1

des russischen Komponisten Alexander Skrjabin in
zunächst aufwühlende und dann zerbrechlich zärtliche
Töne von erhabener Anmut überführt. Oder aber, im letzten
Stück der CD, Kyrie, auf die ersten beiden Teile Kyrie
und Gloria der Messe de Nostre Dame von Guillaume de
Machaut aus dem 14. Jahrhundert zurückgreift und sie fein
und sensibel in der Ästhetik des heutigen Jazz aufgehen
lässt. Lust und Innigkeit sind auch hier die Komponenten,
die diese Musik zu einem bewegenden Klang-Erlebnis
machen. Musik, die Kopf und Herz gleichermaßen stark
ansprechen — und dabei nie die menschlichen HumorZonen vergisst.

The music on this CD amazes with an even richer variety of
sounds than the first one. Its expressive power sparkles,
bursting with intensity. The group seems almost Spartan,
yet it’s a masterful ensemble, with bassist Matt Pennman
and drummer Ted Poor joining Roelofs.
Fans of straight-ahead, swinging jazz will be just as captivated by this album as lovers of subtle ‘chamber jazz’—
music with more of a contemporary classical flair—will be.
The trio’s desire to explore, their passion for playing is
palpable.
Born in 1984, Roelofs graduated in 2007 with a master’s

the Vienna Art Orchestra between 2005 and 2010, he was
asked to play bass clarinet on particular pieces. He found
the instrument so fascinating that he decided to stay with
it, comparing it to a “new love”—a love that obviously still
bursts into flames. Like Roelofs, both partners are quality
players, comfortable in any milieu. Born in New Zealand in
1974, Matt Penman counts as one of the most sought after
bassists on the New York scene. He works with the likes of
Kenny Werner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wolfgang Muthspiel,
Guillermo Klein, and Nils Wogram. His playing is born out of
a mixture of power, pliability, and versatility. Ted Poor was
born in the USA in 1981. In 2000, Poor, along with guitarist
Ben Monder and trumpeter Ralph Alessi, grounded the interactive trio Third Wheel; a master communicator on the
drums, he has played with Chris Potter, Bill Frisell, Marc
Ducret, and Maria Schneider.

This trio is a marvel of changeability; they carry out “tremendous dynamic variations”, and their communication is
both intimate and intense. There is a special appeal wherein two deep-toned melody instruments without the support
of a harmony instrument such as piano or guitar meet in
dialogue, using their entire tonal repertoire in order to cover the total tonal range. Roelofs says, “We have expanded
our role-sharing. Bass and bass clarinet are more interlocked in the exchange between solo and accompaniment.
I have also arranged a couple of classical pieces, one from
Alexander Scriabin and one from Guillaune de Machaut,
and have once again taken on an Ellington piece, Such
Sweet Thunder, in which I try to fully utilize the sound possibilities, the dynamics and rhythmic flexibility of this trio.”

Systematic beauty. Just as with Aliens Deliberating, the
pieces on Amateur Dentist have an exciting background.
Roelofs formulates it this way: “The first piece, Snakes and
Eagles, refers to Nietzsche’s book Thus Spoke Zarathustra,
in which the eagle (pride, power, strength) and the snake
(wisdom, intellect) play an important role. Pseudo Bebop is
a short interlude, and it got its name because it sounds
vaguely like bebop, but the time is out of line, and the tones
are all overtones. Para Poli means ‘too much’ in Greek.
I’ve often been to Crete, and these are particular words
that I especially like. Also, the piece has a lot of chords—
almost too many. Amateur Dentist is another interlude. I like
to let the fantasy run wild, and portray absurd things in the
music. If we are successful with what we planned, it sounds

like a dentist feverishly at work as the drill pulsates and
grinds. I like this best as the album’s title: on the one hand
it’s something that no one was expecting, and on the other
hand it brings very concrete pictures to mind. I had no intention of insulting dentists, by the way. It’s more a serious
attempt to put myself in their shoes. Samurai Curtain actually comes from the Dutch word ‘Samenreiskorting’. This
comes from the Dutch train service, and correctly translated means ‘reduced group fare’. After a Dutch conductor
had accused Ted and Matt of not having bought a ‘Samenreiskorting’, and the two naturally not having understood a
word, I asked them which English word sounded most like
this strange Dutch expression. That’s how I came up with
Samurai Curtain. Maybe that’s something that only the
Dutch can laugh about.”

The music is even more fascinating than the titles. There is
something tongue in cheek about the way the bowed bass
takes over the melody line and the bass clarinet plays the
recurring accompanying line on Such Sweet Thunder—a line
that, naturally, the two trade back and forth. It’s another
world when the same trio transforms the exhilaratingly lyrical cantilena from Russian composer Alexander Scriabin’s
Piano Sonata No.1 into at first disturbing, then fragile, sublimely graceful tones. Then, the CD’s last piece, Kyrie, falls
back on the first two sections of the Messe de Nostre
Dame, Kyrie and Gloria, from the 14th century poet and
composer Guillaume Machaut. In the trio’s sensitive hands,
the piece merges into the contemporary jazz aesthetic. Intimacy and passion, head and heart, and a touch of humor
combine for a moving musical experience.
