Sound of Powder

The Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering (RCPE) is an interdisciplinary research
institute in the area of pharmaceutical process- and product-development in Graz, Austria.
Our goal is to establish technology to transform current product and processes development
approaches in the pharmaceutical and diagnostics industries into a science-based endeavor
together with our partners.
PAID DIPLOMA/ MASTER’S THESIS
Sound of Powder
(Powder bed characterization via sound waves)
Ref.Nr. DA54
To dedicated students with a technical or natural scientific bachelor degree in telematics, electrical
engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, chemical engineering, physics,
material science or related disciplines, we offer an opportunity to write a paid Diploma/ Master’s thesis.
OBJECTIVE
The usage of acoustic waves is a novel tool to characterize bulk properties of solids (including powder
beds). As sketched below, a possible set-up consists of an actuator (sender) which is generating sound
waves and receptors (e.g. accurate piezo microphones), placed on the opposed edge of the powder bed,
to record the “incoming” acoustic signals. Based on the recorded sound patterns it might be possible to
evaluate properties such as the powder bed’s density and particle size profiles.
Powder bed
One possible realization to characterize the powder bed via recorded sound patterns
WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THIS DIPLOMA/ MASTER’S THESIS WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING:
Extensive participation in a top-level and industrially relevant research project in an
international environment
Supervised training in the task
Assistance of experienced staff with the implementation of your own ideas
Supervision of experienced staff for prototype generation and multivariate data analysis
Access to highly modern infrastructure on campus of Graz University of Technology
Adequate compensation and opportunities for personal and professional development
FINANCING: Compensation on the basis of a service contract
If you would like to work interdisciplinarily at the interface between university research and
industry/business and to contribute to the optimization of product and process development in the
pharmaceutical industry, please contact us indicating the reference number.
