Die Franckeschen Stiftungen zu Halle sind das sichtbare Zeugnis der umfassenden sozialen und pädagogischen Reformen, mit denen August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) vor mehr als dreihundert Jahren gesellschaftliche Veränderungen einleitete, die bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten breite Wirkung entfalteten und bis heute spürbar sind. Die Bewerbung der Franckeschen Stiftungen um die Aufnahme in die
UNESCO-Welterbeliste hat zu einer systematischen und sehr intensiven wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit ihrer vollständig erhaltenen Sozial- und Bildungsarchitektur des 18. Jahrhunderts geführt,
die das Kernensemble der Stiftungen in seiner Einzigartigkeit bis heute unverändert ausmacht.
Der vorliegende Ausstellungskatalog illustriert die aus der Bewerbung gewonnenen neuen Erkenntnisse über die Stiftungen insbesondere zu ihrer Baugeschichte und den ideen- und kulturgeschichtlichen
Bedingungsfeldern. Neben einer ausführlichen Einleitung zu den Bauten der Stiftungen im Kontext
der Zeit um 1700, geben kurze, aber anschaulich unterlegte Kapitel Einblicke in spezielle Aspekte der
Baukunst der Franckeschen Stiftungen: das Fachwerk, die Mansarddächer, die Fassade des Waisenhauses, die Gesamtarchitektur und ihre Bewohner. Zwei weitere Kurzkapitel stellen andere, bedeutende Zweckarchitekturen und die Ausstrahlung des Halleschen Waisenhauses sowie die Beispielhaftigkeit der Stiftungen für ein bis in die Moderne reichendes Stilprinzip der Architektur – die ausgesprochene Funktionalität der Gebäude – vor.
Erstmals sind in diesem Katalog auch die fachlichen Gutachten, die eine wesentliche Grundlage für
den UNESCO-Bewerbungsantrag der Stiftungen bilden, vollständig abgedruckt und mit modernen
Architekturfotografien vom Ensemble von Uwe Gaasch kursorisch unterlegt. Die Gutachten behandeln neben den baugeschichtlichen Gesichtspunkten alle weiteren herausragenden Belange zur Kulturund Wirkungsgeschichte der Stiftungen und bieten dadurch wichtige Impulse für weiterführende Forschungsprojekte.
Die Arbeiten legen nahe, dass es sich beim Waisenhaus in Halle sowie der gesamten Anlage der
Franckeschen Stiftungen um eine im nationalen und internationalen Vergleich im Barock tatsächlich
singuläre Architektur handelt, die so vorher nicht nachweisbar ist. Hier wurde eine neue Formensprache öffentlich-repräsentativen Bauens entwickelt, die fundamentale gesellschaftliche Aufgaben – Sozialfürsorge, Erziehung, Bildung, Frömmigkeit – in einen räumlichen Gesamtzusammenhang stellt.
Zudem kamen dabei neue und auch aufwendige bautechnologische sowie gestalterische Methoden und
Ansätze zur Anwendung. Somit öffnet der Ausstellungskatalog den Blick auf Sozialfürsorgebauten im
17. und 18. Jahrhundert und versucht, dieses bislang wenig beachtete Arbeitsfeld im Schatten der Barockforschung und Gesellschaftsgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit stärker in den Fokus zu nehmen und
Anknüpfungspunkte für eine vergleichende internationale Forschung zur Fürsorge- und Bildungsarchitektur in der Vormodern zu liefern.

The Francke Foundations are the outward expression of the comprehensive social and educational
reforms launched by August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) over three hundred years ago. The changes inspired by his reform programme already had a broad impact in society in Francke’s lifetime, and
are still much in evidence in our world today.
The Francke Foundations’ nomination for inscription as UNESCO World Heritage has resulted in
systematic and very intensive scholarly research into their social and educational architecture. It is this
architectural structure, fully preserved from the eighteenth century, which characterises the remarkable
nature of the core Foundations ensemble and makes it so outstanding.
The present exhibition catalogue illustrates the new perspectives on the Foundations gained through
this process of scholarly research. The focus here, in particular, is on the insights into its architectural
history as well as how the architecture itself was informed by the cultural history and ideas of its day.
Apart from a detailed introduction to the Foundations’ buildings in the context of the period around
1700, the catalogue also comprises short illustrated chapters dedicated to specific aspects of the Foundations, their architecture, building techniques and their residents. These topics range from the timberframed construction to the mansard roof, the Orphanage façade, the overall ensemble and the people
who lived here. These are supplemented by two brief chapters presenting related major examples of
functional architecture and the impact of the Orphanage design, and discussing the exemplary nature
of the Foundations’ distinct functionality for an architectural principle which proved crucial in modernist architecture.
For the first time, this catalogue also makes generally available the expert reports central to the Foundations’ UNESCO application. These essays, published here in their entirety, are all written by
acknowledged specialists in their fields and accompanied by photographs of the ensemble today by
architectural photographer Uwe Gaasch. The expert reports not only explore the Foundations’ architectural history, but also address other key aspects of their remarkable influence and role in cultural
history. In this spirit, they also provide an important impetus to further research projects.
The series of export reports collected in this catalogue clearly indicate how, in both a national and
international comparison, the Orphanage as well as the entire Francke Foundations ensemble embody
a style of architecture in the Baroque period that was both genuinely unique and realised here in this
form for the very first time. The Foundations illustrate the development of a new formal and stylistic
language for public display architecture which located fundamental social tasks – social welfare, child
rearing, education, and piety – in a larger spatial context. Moreover, their construction required the
application of new and sophisticated structural and design approaches and methods. By introducing
the theme of social welfare architecture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this exhibition
catalogue sets out to consider in greater detail a field which, eclipsed by Baroque research and early
modern social history, has as yet been the subject of relatively little scholarly work. Such an approach
also seeks to indicate the potential for comparative international research on welfare and educational
architecture in the pre-modern period.
The exhibition catalogue offers both the interested general and scholarly reader new and fascinating
insights into the Francke Foundations.
