Despite initial global objection by peers, the development of laparoscopic techniques has made more and more abdominal interventions possible, and nowadays a plethora of surgical procedures are performed laparoscopically on a routine basis. Similar to laparoscopy itself, minimally invasive oncologic surgery faced substantial disapproval in the beginning, and it has taken many trials to prove the oncological non-inferiority compared with well-established open procedures. While in lower GI surgery laparoscopic procedures are performed routinely, laparoscopic oncologic upper GI or HPB operati ons are only performed in few specialized centers. The more complicated anatomy, the delicate techniques needed for reconstruction, as well as the lower caseload make these operations technically challenging. At our symposium we bring together European experts on oncologic laparoscopic upper GI and HPB surgery, who will share with you their expertise and technique they developed. The presentations of these experts are based on video sequences explaining you how these experts perform these challenging operations.
