This work is illustrated in the 1957 catalogue raisonné by Parker and Mathey. It is listed as
originating in the former collection of the author, Jacques Mathey of Paris (1883–1973). Its
whereaboutsatthetimeofpublicationwereunknown.
The later catalogue raisonné by Rosenberg and Prat (1996) erroneously conflates the Mathey
workwithasimilarbutdifferentdrawingoriginatingintheKoenigscollection.RosenbergandPrat
reject Watteau as the author of the Koenigs work, and instead propose it to be a copy by
Watteau’steacherClaudeGillot.
The author Louis-Antoine Prat reiterated his attribution to Gillot in an interview for the French
newspaperLeFigaroinlate2013.
