Light Up Taiwan (1) Daxi Old Street Daxi, Taoyuan has long been known as the "Town of Presidents." It is the final resting place of two late presidents, Chiang Kai-‐shek and Chiang Ching-‐kuo. Daxi is truly a favored "second hometown" for Taiwan's presidents. The Michelin travel guide published in 2011 included Daxi as a two-‐star destination, and in 2012 it was named a "top-‐10 tourist town" by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau. The Town of Presidents is certainly gaining in popularity. The remnants of influences from the Qing Dynasty, the Japanese colonial period, and Western culture are plainly visible in Daxi's old town, with its many cultural heritage sites and vintage ambience. Its vintage industries have been revitalized by modern creativity, with workshops turned into tourism-‐oriented factories. Lined with century-‐old woodshops and iron forges on its streets, Daxi is a town where the past meets the present. (2) Taiwan Lantern Festival The 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival will celebrate the Year of the Monkey under the theme "Golden Monkey Offering Peaches." The Taiwan Tourism Bureau will present the festival's main and secondary lanterns along with the Welcome Lantern Area, Blessing Lantern Forest, Theme Lantern Curtain, Exchange Lantern Area, Competition Lantern Area, Traditional Lantern Area and Joyous Lantern Area. The Taoyuan City Government will bring light and shadow together at the "Smart Technology Lantern Area" highlighting Taoyuan's smart city image. The city is also planning a dream-‐like "Fairytale Kingdom Lantern Area" highlighting local tourism factory attractions and the the 500-‐plus-‐meter long "Taoyuan Story Lantern Corridor." There will also be a "Diverse Exchange Lantern Area," a friendly city-‐exchange display featuring the renowned Lamigo baseball team and fusing elements from the diverse ethnic groups of Taoyuan, while the "New Peach Blossom Spring Lantern Area" will present a spectacular show of landscape art at scenic Qingtang Park. Local and international friends are all welcome to join the fun and experience the charms of Taoyuan during the Taiwan Lantern Festival. The itinerary is available from February 22 to March 6, 2016.
