Transport Day 2015 Break-‐out Session: Electrifying Road Transport December 6th: 11:30 – 12.45 Title Break-‐Out Session: Electrifying Road Transport Organizers: World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) Contact Persons: Patrick Jochem ([email protected]) Background: A largely decarbonized transport sector will require substantial behavioural changes, including adoption of new vehicle technology, both for freight and passenger travel activities. In this context, electric vehicles (EVs), including hybrid-‐ and battery-‐electric, plug-‐in hybrid and fuel cell, can contribute to meeting key environmental goals. These include oil demand reduction, better air quality and GHG emissions mitigation. The transition to electric mobility represents a crucial component of low-‐carbon development. Deployment of electric mobility options is under way, varying in geography and application, but rapid uptake is yet to occur. Consumer acceptance is today weakened by EV range and cost. With declining EV battery prices, implementation of adequate policies will be instrumental to overcome current diffusion barriers. Stakeholder cooperation is required to achieve long-‐term success in building the electric mobility “ecosystem” that includes vehicles, infrastructure, policy, and society. This session will review the status of electric mobility around the world today, near-‐ term market perspectives and long-‐term visions for future deployment across all applications. It will summarize the business cases for vehicles and infrastructure. It will examine policy innovation from city, regional, and national governments. And it will explore lessons learned in the interactions of all of these elements for public and private sector actors. Objectives of the session: The objectives of the session are robust and interactive discussion around the status and perspectives for electric mobility technology and policy, drawing on examples from experience to date. Final Program: 11:30 Welcome (Yoshi Hayashi, President of WCTRS, Nagoya Univ.) 11:35 Talks: Status and outline (Moderator: Pete Harrison, ECF) • EV market penetration scenarios (Jacob Teter, IEA) • Policy measures for EV market penetration and challenges (Drew Kodjak, ICCT) • Charging technologies (Denis Naberezhnykh, TRL) • Integrating EV into the energy system (Patrick Jochem, KIT) 12:15 Open Panel with questions from the audience: Mitigating option EV? (Moderator: Pete Harrison, ECF) 12:40 Summation and Closing (Pete Harrison, ECF)
