City of Lovington Contact: James Williams City Manager 575-396-9303 For Immediate Release March 12, 2015 1:00 p.m. NMED Issues “Boil Water Advisory” for City of Lovington Water System (LOVINGTON, NM) – The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Drinking Water Bureau has issued a “boil water advisory” for the City of Lovington Water System. NMED issued the advisory today after total coliform bacteria were detected in routine sampling and bacteriological contamination (E. coli) was detected in required repeat drinking water samples from 1 of 16 active water wells. NMED requires the City of Lovington to notify water system consumers of this finding. The water system supplies approximately 12,000 consumers. This advisory only applies to the drinking water from the City of Lovington Water System, and does not extend to any other surrounding systems. Consumers of the City of Lovington Water System are advised to not drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for five minutes, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Most strains of E. coli are harmless and live in the intestines of healthy humans and animals. These types of organisms may cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. Children, the elderly and immune-compromised individuals are at an increased risk for illness. These symptoms are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms, or they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. The NMED Drinking Water Bureau will provide assistance to the water system and the City of Lovington will continue to test the water until no further threat of contamination remains. You will be informed when tests show no E. coli and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate this advisory lasting three days, as required by the New Mexico Environment Department.
